Are you clinging to Christ alone to get you to heaven, or are you trusting in yourself? There is always the temptation to think that our own good works, or our own religious efforts will be enough to make us acceptable to God. But in this precious passage, Luke gives us a precious insight into the agony and achievement of the cross, as he contrasts the obedience and faithfulness of Jesus, to failure and frailty of his disciples. His aim is that we may learn to trust not in ourselves for salvation, but to cling to Christ alone.

There is almost no experience more devastating in life than to be stabbed in the back by a friend. To trust someone, only for them to turn against you. But in John 13, we’re confronted with the most horrific and confronting betrayal of human history: the betrayal of Jesus. And we're face with a most uncomfortable question: have we truly seen the glory of the cross – or are we in danger of betraying Jesus like Judas?

But God has painfully reminded us during these times of Covid-19 that we are not in control of our lives and that it doesn’t matter how hard I work, or how much money I have. I still can’t guarantee even what will happen tomorrow. The extent to which you believe something is true, is the extent to which you will throw yourself into it. If you believe in the vision of your team, you’ll throw yourself behind it. If you don’t, you may do what you must do because of fear of consequences. But you won’t have internal motivation to go above and beyond. That is the same that gospel preaching. If we believe that the gospel is true, then with boldness, we will preach the gospel, and no obstacle will stand in our way. But if don’t believe the gospel is true, you won’t be willing to suffer for it. You won’t boldly proclaim it in the face of opposition. You’ll be silent. And you’ll be afraid.

Divorce is tragic. But it’s even more tragic when the cause of the divorce was unfaithfulness. When one betrays their spouse by committing adultery with another. It’s evil. It’s devastating. It’s painful to think about. But it is that horrific picture of betrayal, adultery, and divorce that we are to keep in mind as we come to Jeremiah 2. What we must come to terms with, is that it’s possible to commit betrayal and adultery not only in our human marriages, but in our relationship with God.

I’ve always loved to see that moment, when the penny drops, and someone understands the Bible for the first time.

For many people, it’s not only exhilarating, but life transforming. 

It’s that  kind of penny-dropping, life-transforming experience that we see in Luke 24 today, as the risen Jesus appears to the two disciples on the road to Emmaeus and explains to them how he fulfils all the Old Testament Scriptures.

The way you end a story gives meaning to the story. The way you end a life gives meaning to a life. Mark’s account of the resurrection is the perfect ending of his gospel. There are few things that we crave more in life than intimate personal relationships with other people. We are increasing living in the age of shallow and superficial friendships. We might have hundreds or even thousands of Facebook friends. We might type hundreds of WhatsApp messages each day. But many of us have very few deep personal relationships. And yet as human beings, we have been hard-wired for a desire for deep personal relationship. Our desire for such deep, secure relationships is no accident. We were made for a deep, personal relationship with God. And it is John’s goal as he writes this letter to convince us that can be assured of our relationship with God. He does exist. He does love us. And his promise of eternal life is true.
