Deb Donner grew up in The Wesleyan Community, a cult-church led by Lou Hillendahl and spent much of that time living in tents without electricity or running water. That’s only part of her incredible story of survival.
In this first half of a two-part interview, Deb speaks candidly & unapologetically with Jemima and Whisper of her life both in and after the cult, and her journey of healing and recovery.
“I don't apologize for speaking the truth and telling the things that happened to me and making people uncomfortable because I think people should be uncomfortable. I think people should be so f*cking uncomfortable that they get up and do something to help.”

Lisa Kendall was just 9 years old when her mother decided to join the “Move of God,” finally leaving at age 19. Today Lisa devotes her time to advocacy work for other child victims of cults and coercive organizations. Lisa has been active in the cult awareness community since 2012, providing support for custody cases, child protective service investigations, testifying before state legislatures, and speaking about the possibilities for public policy to better protect children in coercive groups. A Masters in Public Administration and extensive experience in business and nonprofit management are the cornerstones of her innovative projects. She founded “Counter Cult Coalition” to focus on legislation and raising awareness of the lack of resources and solutions survivors of cults have access to.
Join hosts Jemima and Whisper as we learn more about Lisa’s work, swap crazy cult stories and try to keep our cats away from our microphones.

This week Butterflies and Bravery is taking a short break off-air, and will be back next week with full episodes and extra special guests! (Hint: Have you heard of renowned cult expert Dr. Janja Lalich?) Of course, we wouldn't be us without a quick check-in, a little of our signature rambling, and an original Jemima-ism mental healthy snack. That's also about food. (Hunger may have been involved in the conception.) A somewhat cryptic sneak-peak of upcoming interviews we're pretty-damn-excited-about rounds up this short episode. So, come for the burgers and stay for the fangirling! It will be the best 17 minutes you've wasted today so far.

What do you do when the founder of the cult you were born into is your paternal grandfather? Whatever you can to survive. In this unprecedented interview, for the first time David Berg speaks out about growing up in the cult that his namesake founded. David bravely tells us his touching story for the first time, and we got to ask the question: What was it like growing up as the grandson of the leader of the Children of God? Probably nothing you can imagine.
