  • by design episode #83: Playroom Project
    Hey there all! Today we are FINALLY sharing the playroom project we designed for beautiful friends of ours awhile back. They recently expanded their family, and we were able to sneak into their playroom and jazz it up as a surprise before their homecoming.
    This was a darling little project with lots of fun details and diys (on the fly as usual). Be sure to scroll thru and check out all the before and after photos, and links to some of the items we used in the project.
    And head over to our sweet friend Lovelyn’s instagram to catch up on their incredible story!

  • by design episode #82: DIY Outdoor Pallet Furniture
    In this episode Dannette shares a DIY she just finished using pallets to make outdoor an outdoor sofa and chair. Be sure to check out the By Design Pinterest Board for links to some sweet outdoor projects!
    OUTDOOR PALLET DIY:

    Here are a few finished images. The pallets haven’t been painted yet (will soon be dark gray) and we’re still waiting for the back cushions to arrive.

    STEP 1: COLLECT PALLETS

    STEP 2: POWERWASH THE PALLETS.
    You have no idea where they’ve been, so hose them down! FYI, they’re easier to clean when they’re still assembled.
    STEP 3: BREAK THE PALLETS DOWN.

    A few methods you could use:

    * Block Method (if you don’t have power tools): https://www.youtube.com/watch/?v=JMcyXes7MPg
    * Sawzall Method (Lyn’s favorite): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BxMnQxb2OmY
    * Circular Saw or Dremel (what Dannette did): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gDoXdYMDcqI

    STEP 4: SKETCH OUT YOUR PLAN & ASSEMBLE

    * An options using pallets (similar to Dannette’s sketch): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OHMKwaBT5jE
    * Another plan we liked, but this uses new wood, not pallets: http://www.ana-white.com/2017/06/free_plans/modern-outdoor-chair-2x4s-and-2x6s
    * Dannette’s sketch & detailed plants will be available soon…! Until then, here are some progress shots and general info:

    1 – BUILD THE SEAT BASE.

    2 – ADD POST LEGS

    3 – ADD 3 BACK REST AND SUPPORTS

    STEP 4: BUY CUSHIONS
    Here are the ones I liked from Ikea (but these are not shown in the images since they haven’t arrived yet)

  • by design episode #77: King Saul – His Humility or His Pride // 1 Samuel 9
    Hey friends! We’re back this week with episode #77 and continuing our conversation about King Saul. We talk through 1 Samuel 9, the context of the story, and discuss beginnings and heart of King Saul, weighing in on his humility and pride. We talk about how sometimes we end up like Saul, seeing more of ourselves in our circumstances than we do the God who is at work in them.

  • by design episode #76: Courage Over Comfort // 1 Samuel 3
    Today we’re continuing our series on the book of 1 Samuel. We get into the story of Eli and the mistake he made by not dealing with the disobedience of his sons. We chat about shining the light in the darkness, the struggle to stand for what it is right, and how we sometimes choose the easy, comfortable way instead of choosing to stand for truth.
    We also talk about the busyness of life and how important it is to find God in the every day race.
    This is a great one friends. We hope it encourages you!

  • by design episode #75: Seeing Souls (1st Samuel Series) & Shiplap Wall DIY
    In this episode we talk about what WE SEE when we look at others and what GOD SEES. We talk a little bit about the superficial stuff, some of our insecurities, and how we sometimes make decisions about who we want to know and be friends with based on how the package looks, not the contents. We simplify things and try to get to the heart of the matter. We talk about being image bearers, coveting, and talk a little bit about King Saul in 1 Samuel. This is the first episode in a little series we’re doing on 1 Samuel, so be sure to follow along 😉
    We also talk about the exhausting, necessary, ever-changing routine of keeping your kids in bed at night. We share a few stories and try to encourage you mommas out there to stay the course — because SLEEP is worth it, and so is your marriage. 😉
    We have a little design in this one too. Dannette shares about the shiplap wall that’s underway in her living room.

    DANNETTE’S HOUSE: Shiplap Wall (in progress pics)

    * This is wall in my living room that I painted black prior to planking. Painting the wall underneath your planking black will help the reveals between each plank shadow correctly.
    * We bought a 4×8 sheet of plywood and cut it into 5″ high pieces. We chose 5″ height because it worked best when the wall was divided up height wise. I also did not want them to be too wide or too narrow (because I’m cra-cra). So 5″ is what worked for us.
    * We started at the ceiling and leveled the top board and are working our way down. We placed pennies between each board as we hung them to maintain the correct spacing between boards.

    * This wall in our living room actually is serving as our make-shift homework bench for the kids. We don’t have a foyer or large area for backpacks and homework, so the kids are placing their stuff here at the moment. Things change at our house weekly (no joke) but this is our set-up at the moment.

    * This is the view we discussed in the podcast that looks thru the living room into the 3 seasons room with the white brick.
    * We will eventually be painting the door trim between these two spaces the dark charcoal black!

  • by design episode #74: Coffee Filter Wreath DIY
    Today we share a wreath diy because Spring is almost here, and we needed some light and airy inspiration ? Dannette shows us how to make a tissue wreath using coffee filters, and she also shares a little bit about what she’s been learning about the Lord’s Supper as she re-reads Tim Keller’s book “The King’s Cross”.

    COFFEE FILTER WREATH DIY
    Supplies:

    * glue gun
    * paint brush, chopstick or pencil
    * basic wreath (if using a wire wreath like I did below, you’ll need fabric/lace to wrap around it)
    * coffee filters
    * burlap string

    If you plan to dye your filters first you’ll need the following:

    * paint
    * a plastic cup to mix the paint in and spoon
    * water

    Step 1: Dye the coffee filters if you want a colored wreath

    * Take your paint and squirt a bunch into a plastic cup & mix with a little water.
    * Fill a plastic bin or a bucket with a little water and pour in pre-mixed cup full of paint/water mixture & stir it around.
    * Grab the coffee filters and submerge a stack. Then separate one by one and swirl around in the water so each covered. Continue until all the filters are wet and dyed. You shouldn’t need to keep them in the water long — they just need a quick dip.
    * Wring the filters out one by one and place in a bin.
    * Cover a large surface with wax paper and lay each filter out flat to dry. They can overlap slightly as long as you wrung them out completely.
    * Let dry overnight or for a day. They are ready to use once they’re dry.
    * I used black paint to dye the wreath below light gray. It’s hard to get a strong color, unless you use a lot of paint and just a little water.

    Step 2: Wrap your wreath with fabric if it’s a wire one.

    * Start by gluing the fabric (lace is what I used) to the wire, then start wrapping. Glue at the very end to complete the wrap.

    Step 3: Add a String to Hang it

    * Cut a long piece of burlap string and tie it to the wreath. This will be what you hang it with later, so extra length is helpful. It’s also nice to have the string attached at the beginning so you can hang the wreath after a day’s work (it may take more than one day to make the wreath, and being able to hang it in between keeps it from getting stepped on or smushed by your family!).
