  • by design episode #55: a modest heart & tile backsplashes // kitchen reno series
    Today we finish up our series on Kitchen Reno’s with some advice on tile backsplashes. We chat about the best tile sizes to use, whether or not to run your countertop up the wall, and all our favorite options as far as tile style goes.
    We also talk a little about modesty and not just in the sense of how we dress. We’re talking about a modest heart posture, one that doesn’t seek to bring glory and attention to itself, but rather to God. We focus on asking ourselves some questions to help get to the heart of our own issues. Our hope is get both our eyes and hearts {and maybe even our wardrobes} pointing back to the God we love…not towards ourselves.
    Thanks so much for listening!

    But whatever was to my profit I now consider loss for the sake of Christ. What is more, I consider everything a loss compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them rubbish, that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ–the righteousness that comes from God and is by faith. (Phillipians 3:7-9 NIV)

    PAINTING YOUR CABINETS:

    * Remove doors and hardware. Be sure to number and label both the doors and the hardware as you remove them or you’ll regret it later. It’s also a good idea to put the hardware for each door in a plastic baggy inside the cabinet box itself, so it will be easy and obvious what goes to where later on.
    * Clean the existing cabinets using a degreaser like TSP. It may take a few times over to remove all the years of grime. Don’t skip this step — it’s necessary to get a good finish in the end.
    * Fill dings with wood putty.
    * Sand the cabinets just enough to roughen up the surface so the new finish will adhere better. You don’t need to sand them completely down, unless there are areas that are flaking or chipping. 100 grit sandpaper should do the trick.
    * Vacuum all the dust off the cabinets.
    * Prime the cabinets using a good stain blocker product like Zinsser’s BIN or Kilz.
    * If there are brush strokes, do a quick sanding of the cabinets using 220-grit sandpaper.
    * Paint your first coat. (use light coats, not too much paint) You can roll or brush paint the boxes, but if you can, spray the doors for a better finish.
    * Sand with 220-grit paper. Don’t forget to wipe off and vacuum dust after each sanding.
    * Paint your second coat.
    * Sand again. Don’t forget to wipe off and vacuum dust after each sanding.
    * Apply a clearcoat or acrylic for extra protection if you’re up for it.
    * Reinstall all doors and hardware.

  • by design episode #53: Countertops // Kitchen Reno Series
    We’re continuing with our Kitchen Reno Series and today we talk about COUNTERTOPS. Lyndsye shares more about her kitchen reno and why they chose the counters they did. We talk about all the options, types and some of the pros and cons.

    TYPES OF COUNTERTOPS:

    * Plastic Laminate: Made of layers of resin and kraft paper and has a decorative layer of pattern or color sandwiched within. It’s topped off with a clear melamine resin on top for protection.

    * Pros: Inexpensive for one. And they have lots of new options out now that look like concrete, wood, quartz, etc. So you can achieve the look you want for much less money. They’ve also come a long way with durability and some manufacturers have specialty finishes for extra protection.
    * Cons: Has a particle board core, so the color and material isn’t solid all the way thru like solid surface or quartz. It’s also more likely to warp in wet areas over time, doesn’t take to heat so you can’t sit hot pots or dishes without the risk of damage (unless your a risk taker like Dannette!). You’re also not supposed to cut on it because you could scratch thru the wear layer. I have heard you can use furniture wax or laminate fillers to help hide the scratches if you do get some, but there is no way to buff it out or make it go away completely.
    * Popular Brands: Wilsonart, Formica, Pionite, Nevamar, Lamin-Art (one of Dannette’s favs, even have some laminates made of recycled content like jute and banana fibers…very cool)

    * Solid Surface: It’s made from a proprietary blend of natural minerals bonded with quality acrylic, the result is a durable surface that is easy to clean.

    * Pros: Easy to clean. It’s also nonporous so it won’t absorb bacteria or water, which puts it a step above the wear-ability of laminate. It’s also somewhat resistant to staining.
    * Cons: It can scratch and stain, and you have to buff it out. This is a pro and a con in my opinion. It’s a lot of work to get it out sometimes, but at least you CAN.

    * Granite/Natural Stone:

    * Pros: It’s timeless. Natural stones just can’t go out of style in our opinion. Granite is also a very hard stone, so it’s not prone to scratching like laminate or solid surface. It’s also heat resistant, so it’s great around your stove and you can sit hot pots and dishes on it without problem. It’s also relatively low maintenance, not needing much as far as upkeep. It’s all a thru-body products, so it’s completely granite top to bottom.
    * Cons: Large veining, can be busy. Needs to be resealed every year. It may not look like it needs to be sealed, but it’s a porous product, so over time it will absorb bacteria. Ew! And it will also start to absorb stains like wine, juice or oil if the sealant wears off and those are the types of stains you cannot remove. Be sure to pay attention to the finish you are purchasing as well. Whether honed or polished. A honed finish is more matte and porous and will need to be resealed more often, like every few months.

    OUR THOUGHTS ON HARDWARE FINISHES & STYLE:

    * Brushed Stainless Steel // Brushed Nickel – These finishes are always and forever in our opinion, and will always be “in”. They may seem more everyday, but you can spice it up a bit by choosing a more interesting style of knob or pull.
    * Brass // Copper – So beautiful, a little expensive, but worth it if you can afford it.
    * Black // Oil Rubbed Bronze – Simple and a great contrast if you have lighter cabinets.

  • by design episode #51: pursuit
    Today we talk about the topic of PURSUIT and what that looks like in terms of our faith. We discuss how God is after our hearts, how he pursues us, follows after us, and how he is forever longing to heal and restore the broken within us all. We chat about the things we find ourselves chasing, the longing in our hearts to be found, and the beauty of the pursuit of God.
    Lyn also shares a bit about her passion for this idea of pursuit and how it led her to start a women’s gathering here in Northwest Indiana.
    This episode is a such good reminder of how precious each of us are. We are chosen, sought after, and written on the palms of his very hands. We hope this one encourages you this week to open your eyes and hearts to the prompting of God in your life. This God of ours is after our wayward hearts. Each and every one of ours.

  • by design episode #50: LINA ABUJAMRA // Living with Power
    Alright guys… so today is episode 50 for us…and we’re probably more excited about our GUEST than we are about it being #50!!!
    Today we have LINA ABUJAMRA on the show, and if you haven’t heard of her yet, you need to listen in because she is doing some amazing things in the name of Jesus. Lina works as a Pediatric ER doctor in Chicago, and she also founded a non profit called LIVING WITH POWER. On top of that, Lina is a gifted speaker (we’re talking anointed!), has written multiple books, hosts a radio show on Moody called Today’s Single Christian, has a podcast, blogs, and is also working in the Middle East providing medical care and hope to Syrian refugees.
    {insert the sound of crickets…right!!!?}
    THIS GAL IS ON FIRE. She’s full of wisdom and good ole’ spunk, and we’ve been championing her ever since we heard her speak a few years ago at a Rooted Chicago event. Lina is passionate about God’s word and her heart and burden is for the church. FOR US. She’s not just someone writing books and speaking and living the so called dream; she’s someone who has struggled and failed and who is just doing what she can with the gifts she’s been given. And she just so happens to be really good at it 😉
    She inspires us. Our hope is she’ll inspire you to LIVE WITH POWER.
    Thanks so much for listening!

  • by design episode #49: The Verb with Dr. Holleman {CHOSEN}
    Dr. Heather Holleman is back in this episode to discuss the verb CHOSEN. As we’ve mentioned before, Heather has a PhD in English Literature and has been teaching writing at Penn State for 10+ years. She also writes books (like life changing ones!) and we’re excited to share her passion for verbs and knowledge of God’s word with you all!
    Today we chat about what it means to be CHOSEN from Ephesians 1. Heather shares 7 reasons WHY God chose us, and the way she breaks it down for us is super encouraging. Oftentimes we think of being “chosen” in terms of election/predestination and all that…but Heather takes us somewhere completely different . There’s so much goodness wrapped into this conversation — you don’t want to miss it!!!
    We also get to hear a bit about Heather’s new bible study “Included in Christ: Living a New Story from Ephesians.” You’ll be able to buy it online starting June 6th, 2017.

  • by design episode #48: shannon courtaney // intentional parenting
    Today we get to talk with one of our favorite ladies! Shannon Courtaney has mentored Lyn in SO many ways over the years and has always pointed her to truth both in her words and by modeling it in her own life. She’s a mom to four sweet kids and is someone who many of us look to for wisdom and encouragement in our little community here in Valparaiso, Indiana. Shannon and her husband Brad are not the perfect parents by any means, but we believe they have been gifted with grace and wisdom, and we are excited to share some of what they’ve learned over the years with our listeners.
    We chat with Shannon about what it looks like to be intentional as parents, keeping the end goal in mind. We all want our kids to succeed, to get jobs and be good human beings with hearts for the Lord, right? Shannon gives us some practical insight and tips for moms of all ages and leaves us feeling like we can actually do this thing called parenting, and do it well.
    Thank you Shannon for being such a great model of Titus 2 for us!!!

  • by design episode #47: lisa-jo baker // never unfriended { bonus episode! }
    Since this weekend is Mother’s Day, we thought we’d treat you all with a BONUS episode!  We’re chatting with the lovely Lisa-Jo Baker in this one, and seriously, who better to encourage us all for Mother’s Day than this gem?! Lisa tells us all about her new book Never Unfriended and unpacks the beautiful and sometimes painful concept of friendship. She shares some really great insight about how to build friendships that last, and we’re so inspired by her take on this that we wanted to share a quote from the book…
    “While we might have defined friendship our whole lives by what others do to us, in the end it’s what we do for others that will define us as friends or not.”  — Lisa-Jo Baker, Never Unfriended
    We also chat with Lisa-Jo about motherhood, what’s up and coming for (in)courage, #fomo love {fear of missing out — I KNOW, right?!} and the new bible study she has coming out!
    This is a GREAT episode, friends. One of our favorites! Hope you listen in…and have a Happy Mother’s Day!
