By Design Podcast

We’re just starting to dig in to the gospel of Mark and today we chat about what the Holy Spirit is bringing to the forefront for us as we begin to comb thru this book. We talk about the great compassion Jesus had for those who crossed his path and how his heart for them was to set down the world, turn, and follow. And boy, that seems like a daily calling, doesn’t it? To set down what we’re gripping so tightly and turn our faces back to One who we were made for…

We also talk about how Jesus continually modeled getting alone with the Father. We talk about solitude, the quiet, and how stealing away moments within our day and seeking His face can take us deeper into relationship with Him.

The design portion of this one is also a fun earring holder diy! It’s super easy by the way; one any of you can handle. So be sure to check our website for details and more pics.

Earring Frame DIY

For this little diy, you’ll need the following:

* an old frame

* paint and sandpaper (if you want to paint freshen up the frame at all)

* wire cutters or some serious scissors

* chicken wire or window screen

* staple gun or hot glue gun

* sharpie (of course!)

1. GRAB YOURSELF AN OLD PICTURE FRAME

* 8×10 or larger is best. Since some earrings dangle {we like the big feather ones that our sweet friend Joanna makes, you can buy them here}, we would recommend the frame to be at least 10″ (so at least an 8×10 frame) so they can hang nicely.

* If you bought the frame at Goodwill and there’s an old picture in it that’s unsightly, RIP IT OUT. Don’t feel guilty. Odds are that artwork served it’s time well in this world. It’s ok. Really 😉

2. CUT THE CHICKEN WIRE OR WINDOW SCREEN TO FIT

* Lay out your piece of screen or chicken wire flat on your worksurface, then slip the picture frame under it, face down.

* This will help you LAYOUT where you will need to snip or cut the wire/screen.

* Move and ALIGN THE FRAME to the edge of the wire or screen if possible, so you will not have to cut at least one side.

* Carefully go around the perimeter of the frame and using your sharpie, MARK ON THE WIRE/SCREEN where you need to cut the wire.

* I usually like to line up the edge of wire/screen somewhere in the middle of the frame width, so it won’t be visible from the front.

* Then CUT along your sharpie marks. Or if you’re in a rush, have your hubby step in and help.

Today’s episode was such an honor to record. We chat with the radiant Kay Warren about her new book Sacred Privilege, which releases TODAY!

Kay shares a bit of her journey as a pastor’s wife with us (Kay and her husband Rick Warren co-founded Saddleback Church in California) and she even shares a few of the very real road bumps and valleys along the way. We chat about her heart for those in the midst of ministry and she gives some great words of encouragement and wisdom for those struggling thru the hard places.

We also hear Kay’s personal story of loss, as her son Matthew killed himself only a few short years ago. We hear her story as a mom and pastor’s wife, and she shares what it’s like to grieve her sweet son so openly in the public eye.

Kay also shares her passion for those living with anxiety, depression, and mental illness…and oh my goodness, it is BEAUTIFUL. She has a vision for the church to be a place of acceptance and belonging, one that offers community and fellowship and hope to those who suffer not only from these types of illnesses, but the stigma that seems to follow them.

LYN’S HOME RENOVATION:

A few before shots // Lyn’s beautiful antique cabinet used to sit front a plain old painted wall. It’s pretty. But just wait…

On demo day, Lyn let her kiddos write on the wall! SO FUN. This is the before shot of the wall between the kitchen and living/foyer area. This is the wall that they opened up…

The after shots // Here’s the wall all opened up. Look at all that light !!! And this wall got shiplap as well, really adding some character and texture to the all drywall room.

And of course, Lyn’s antique cabinet looks stunning in front of the other shiplap wall.

 

And Lyn does such a great job of decorating, we had to include a few lovely detail pics to inspire you.

We also chatted a bit about Lyn’s kitchen cabinets and countertops, but that part of the project is still underway. We’ll do another post of everything once it’s all finished up. Here’s a glimpse of some of the open shelving they recently installed. The walls aren’t painted or anything, but still, the shelves have already transformed the space.

To start, let’s get all inspired with this beautiful potting table featured on www.stonetableblog.com. Not only will you get to cut and display beautiful flowers in your home with a cutting garden, but come on, you’ll have use for a POTTING TABLE like the one shown below! Yes, please 😉

Ok, so let’s get back to business. CUTTING GARDENS! 

1 – First things first. We found some great info on how to start a cutting garden over at www.mnn.com . This list below is an excerpt from their post.

Select a location. The best site will be one that gets plenty of sun, has rich soil and drains well. An ideal site might be one that borders a vegetable or herb garden since the “crop style” planting purpose of the cutting garden and the vegetable/herb beds will complement each other. Other considerations for sites include sunny spots along the back boundary, in a corner that hasn’t been planted or behind or beside the garage. Small spaces can hold a lot of plants. As a general rule, a 3 by 6 foot bed will hold about 20 plants.

Plan the garden. Once you know the dimensions of the cutting garden and the sun angles of the new bed, you can draw a design based on plant heights and bloom times. Plan for dense plantings with a mixture of color, stem lengths and textures that will bloom in spring, summer and fall. Be sure to draw a plan that avoids gaps. Remember your goal: It’s to produce flowers to create great looks indoors, not in the cutting garden itself. Be creative in your design and be sure to include your favorite shrubs, annuals, perennials, herbs and bulbs.

Prepare the soil. The cutting garden should have the same rich soil as your other garden beds. Add humus in the form of compost, peat moss or chopped leaves to a depth of 8-10 inches to improve clay or sandy soil.

Plant the garden. Plant in rows according to your plan. This will provide for the easiest access and reduce the time and effort needed to weed, feed, thin, fertilize, deadhead and harvest. If you wind up with unintended gaps, fill in with annuals or herbs.

Cut the flowers. Finally the best part! This is where planning and preparation pay off. Use the colors, stem lengths, textures of the foliage and floral fragrances to create appealing arrangements to enjoy and to impress your guests.

If you don’t have gardening space to add a cutting garden or want to include more plants in a cutting garden than you have room for, don’t worry. Just plant your favorite flowers and shrubs throughout the space you do have. Just don’t cluster them. By spreading out the flowers you are growing specifically for cutting in your existing beds, you won’t create gaps when you remove the blooms.

2 – We gathered some great info on perennials, based on shade, sun and which are the easiest to care for. 

On today’s episode we share some decor ideas to freshen up your homes for Spring. We chat wreaths, terrariums, and few simple diy’s to bring some life and greens into your spaces.

Spring Decor Ideas

* Add a boxwood or magnolia wreath to your wall or door

* Add in a few small boxwoods or other greens to your mantel or tabletop

* Dried flowers and petals are a nice touch

* Terrariums are an easy and pretty way to bring the outdoors in

* Faux nests and eggs can also be really cute {if not overdone}

* Hang a garland or swag of greens above your sofa, television or even your headboard

* Introduce some lace or doilies beneath tabletop items (this is my workroom, not the best shot!!!)

* DIY Embroidery Hoop with Flowers or Greens

* Find yourself an old wooden hoop and remove whatever is covering it

* Grab some live greens off a tree or some faux greenery or flowers and tie small bunches together with floral wire

* Then tie each bunch to the embroidery ring. You can completely cover it, or sparingly like I did.

* Washi tape can do wonders to any wall or empty frame

* And if your brave, try hanging a stick over your table for Easter! It could be really pretty with little birdies and candles like shown below.  (or forego the birds if they’ll be target practice for the kids!)

Josh also holds a BS in civil engineering and is currently completing his MA in Christian Studies at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School.

As we’ve been learning about the freedom we have Christ, we’ve also been asking ourselves some hard but needed questions about repentance and where it fits into the life of a believer. *** Do we actually repent? As believers and followers of Christ, where is our repentance? Do we apologize, repent, or seek forgiveness when we’ve sinned? Are we willing to admit that we are ever at fault? ***  We chat with Josh, one of our trusted mentors, about being authentic and honest about our shortcomings and sin, and how that should look in the body of Christ so that we can truly encourage and pray for one another.

It’s a candid conversation about a topic that seems complex and painful, but is actually a simple kindness, one that God wants us to partake in, because on the other side is freedom and joy and buckets full of grace.
