  • by design episode #27: Heather Holleman
In this week’s episode we chat with the amazing Heather Holleman. This woman is brilliant, beautiful and brave — and we know you’ll be SO DANG BLESSED by her! She’s a wife, a mom to two girls, an accomplished professor, has a PhD in English literature, AND has penned some pretty incredible books. She has this way of painting pictures with words that speak to the soul. Seriously. She’s a gift.
Not to mention she’s written one of our favorite books Seated With Christ: Living Freely in a Culture of Comparison. We chat with Heather about the power of God’s word, and she shares the specific verse and story behind the struggle that brought her to write these life changing books. We also get the scoop about her newest book Guarded By Christ: Knowing the God Who Rescues and Keeps Us. Heather’s honesty and transparency about her battle with depression and comparison are truly inspiring and something you won’t easily forget.
GIVEAWAY // She’s also been so gracious and is gifting TWO of our listeners an audio book of Seated With Christ … read by Heather herself! Yay!
All you have to do to enter is:

    1. MANTLES – Our advice on this one, is keep it simple. Less is MORE.
And yes, some of us have camo stockings. But simplifying the surrounding elements, can even make them look beautiful. Dannette has hung hers on her wood burning stove.

If your lucky enough to have a fireplace, be sure to add a few lights, some greens and a glass element or two to your mantle.

And pine cones are magical. Sprinkle them around!

If you don’t have a mantle or fireplace, we love the idea of hanging your stockings from a large branch!
    2. STICKS AND GREENS – They’re a great way to add texture and that natural element everyone loves.
Mixing in beads is never a bad idea either!

Even just adding greens or branches to a bucket can do the trick.

Or add a few to add some glitz to your magazine bin.

You can also just stash some in a glass jar or vase.
    3. GARLAND. A staple of all things Christmas decor.
Last year Dannette and her kids made popcorn garland and spiced up their buck.

    THANKSGIVING CENTERPIECE IDEAS
    {by design} pinterest board: https://www.pinterest.com/bydesignpodcast/
    1. Paint it GOLD
    2. put your centerpiece arrangement in a dish, tray, or basket
This is a great way to quickly move things off the table to make room for the food. It also makes everything seem to “belong” together once it’s grouped in a tray like this…which is an easy way to put things together if you’re not the centerpiece master 🙂
    3. use a glass cloche with candles or LED lights
    4. add some details using sharpies or markers
    5. get creative with your place settings
    6. you can’t go wrong with mini pumpkins!
    7. the ever so lovely pumpkin as a centerpiece
    8. don’t forget about the kids

  • by design episode #23: When Your Past Is Messy & Broken
In this episode we chat about how God actually wants to use our failures — and the very things we think we need to HIDE about ourselves — to encourage and love on the people around us.
Dannette shares from her heart about a broken time in her past and how God is using and redeeming some of that hurt and loss in surprising ways today. We also talk about some of the messy and not so picture perfect times in our lives, share some vulnerable stories about divorce and suicide, AND even throw in a bit about baby vampires.
It sounds crazy and all over the place, but honestly, we keep things pretty real in this one.

    GIFT GUIDE
    {by design} pinterest board: https://www.pinterest.com/bydesignpodcast/
    1. Project Free 2 Fly
Free 2 Fly was born out of a desire to start a creative business that would exist to do one thing: help women in our community who are unemployed but desire to rise above their current circumstance.  Many women face circumstances that are holding them back from reaching their full potential. We want to not only encourage them, but also show them how they can rise above and move beyond that circumstance.
There are many women that have dreams and goals for their lives, but they either don’t believe they could ever achieve them or don’t know how to start pursuing them. Free 2 Fly desires to support, nurture and empower women so when they begin to voice their dreams and hopes, they learn to realize that they can be attainable. From transitioning out of homelessness to facing an unwed crisis pregnancy, we believe that women can find purpose and value within our community, in spite of the trials they face.  Teaching them how to sew is a catalyst for increased self-esteem.  It also enables them to realize that they can learn a new skill and experience success.
These foundations that we are helping them build will equip them for long-term success and sustainability in the workforce.  Free 2 Fly’s main objective is to build a business and organization that serves women in our community.  Upon exiting our program, we believe these women will have the foundations they need to succeed and thrive.
