Two years ago, Gov. Gavin Newsom signed off on an ambitious plan to make a pre-kindergarten program available to California’s 4-year-olds for free. A day to honor those who lost their life due to anti-trans violence, Transgender Remembrance Day, was commemorated at Fresno State’s Satellite Student Union. Resources and information were offered to attendees including trans-youth and allies. On December 15, 2023, UC Riverside will host a virtual roundtable to discuss the campaign to remove the "exception clause" from the California Constitution. This clause allows using "involuntary servitude" as a punishment for crime. Concerns about its impact on human rights, justice, and rehabilitation have been raised. The roundtable will focus on these concerns and their potential solutions. On a chilly autumn morning in the California desert, on the side of a highway, two young men are asking for help.
