  • Ramsey Going Nowhere! – Italian Football News 29 Jan 22
Juve's fantastic swoop for Dusan Vlahovic is masking one of their worst transfer decisions ever.
Ciao, ragazzi! This is Andrew with your Calcio Daily for Saturday January 29th, our 156th daily show in a row!

When Juventus signed Aaron Ramsey in 2018, many saw it as another smart bit of business from the Italian champions. At 28 years old, Aaron was at the peak of his career and Arsenal fans were crying into their craft beers at his departure.
So they gave him a 5 year contract on huge wages and hoped his rampaging runs from midfield would offer them even more going forward.
But they wilfully ignored one vital fact. That Arsenal were prepared to let him go for nothing.
Had Juventus ignored what Arsenal may have seen very clearly? That Ramsey would never be able to stay fit consistently over the remainder of his career?
Ramsey had his injury issues at Arsenal, especially after a horrific double leg break in 2010. His recovery from that and subsequent return to full fitness made him a Gunners fan favourite but now, even die hard Ramsey supporters at Arsenal will look back and see the decision to let him leave on a free as a wise one.
Ramsey's time at Juve has been peppered with an endless series of muscle problems and illnesses that have limited his game time more and more, year on year.
This season, he has played 98 minutes of Serie A, earning a salary of 7.5 million euros after tax and in 2021, the Welshman played more for his country than he did for his club.
So what were Juve thinking? Did they think they could 'cure' him? Did they think he would magically grow out of his physical problems or did they just think that with them winning the scudetto every year, the good times would never stop and they could take expensive punts whenever they wanted?
They want Ramsey out. He has been frozen out of the squad and the club are desperate for him to go but the player, as is his right, is refusing to go. He has turned down offers to move to Burnley, Palace, Aston Villa, Newcastle United and Wolves and if he doesn't go, he'll be hanging round the Aaron Ramsey wing at the Juventus Medical Centre for another year and a half.
The Ramsey transfer is one that has bitten Juventus on their stripey backsides but a warning for Spurs fans. The man who decided that signing Ramsey was a great idea is now running your club!

  • Inter Sign Gosens! – Italian Football News 28 Jan 22
Inter counter Juve's purchase of Dusan Vlahovic with the signing of Atalanta's Robin Gosens.
Ciao, ragazzi! This is Andrew with your Calcio Daily for Friday January 28th, our 155th daily show in a row!
Before we begin, remember that Calcio Daily is a value for value podcast – you donate what you think the show is worth and the best way to do that is via the Fountain podcast app on iphone or android, or you can buy each episode as an NFT on OpenSea, just search for Calcio Daily.
High-flying German left-back Robin Gosens is now an Inter player.
He signed yesterday from Atalanta for a fee believed to be 25 million Euros, to become Inter's first major move in the transfer window.
His move will disappoint Atalanta fans, who saw Gosens move to Bergamo from Heracles Almelo 3 and a half years ago for just over a million euros and go on to help define Atalanta's swashbuckling style and become a regular international, playing for Germany in Euro 2020.
But his departure fits the Atalanta business model perfectly. Making a 25 times profit on the player is how Atalanta stay competitive. It's also testament to the coaching of Gasperini who saw Gosens' potential and raised his game.
As for Gosens himself, he posted a heartfelt message to Atalanmta fans on INstagram after his signing was confirmed.
He said "Thank you to the fans who supported me always, thank you to the teammates who helped me grow in every training session, thank you to the staff who put faith in me and thank you to the club who gave me the opportunity to play in a great league.
“However, in football there are possibilities that come along only once and this is why I am very happy to sign for Inter!"

  • Arsenal In For Osimhen? – Italian Football News 27 Jan 22
With Vlahovic off to Juventus, Arsenal and Newcastle United turn their attentions to another Series A star.
Ciao, ragazzi! This is Andrew with your Calcio Daily for Thursday January 27th, our 154th daily show in a row!
    osimhen #napoli #arsenal

Before we begin, remember that Calcio Daily is a value for value podcast – you donate what you think the show is worth and the best way to do that is via the Fountain podcast app on iphone or android, or you can buy each episode as an NFT on OpenSea, just search for Calcio Daily.

Man, it's been a busy week on the transfer front! Now that the Vlahovic transfer is finalised, clubs that missed out on him are turning their attentions elsewhere.

Most upset seem to be Arsenal, who have forgotten that apart from the financial benefits, a move for most players from Serie A to Arsenal is not a step up and that's certainly the case for the current object of their desire, Napoli's Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen.

The Gunners had a 75 million euro bid for Vlahovic immediately dismissed by Fiorentina and the player himself even said he had no interest in Arsenal. Newcastle also had their bid rejected, no shock as they are facing a relegation fight for the rest of this season.

So will Napoli consider a bids for their front man? They paid Lille 80 million for Osimhen in 2020 and after a quiet first season interrupted with injuries, this season he has led the line and Napoli have missed him when he has been absent.

There's a feeling in Naples that Osimhen will develop into a striker along the lines of Didier Drogba. He's faster than Drog and has similar power and srength.

So my guess is that Osimhen will go nowhere unless someone is willing to pay over 100 million for him. Arsenal and Newcastle may be desperate for strikers but neither of them will stump up that much cash.

Elsewhere in Serie A, Liverpool are linked with a move for Paulo Dybala, while his teammate Alvaro Morata is still trying to engineer a move to Barcelona, with the agreement of his parent club Atletico and his current club Juventus but that move looks increasingly unlikely.

  • Juventus Sign Vlahovic! – Italian Football News 26 Jan 22
Juventus get the signing everyone wanted as Dusan Vlahovic agrees to join from Fiorentina.
Ciao, ragazzi! This is Andrew with your Calcio Daily for Wednesday January 26th, our 153rd daily show in a row!
    #vlahovic #fiorentina #juventus

The will he / won't he and where to drama that has been the career of Dusan Vlahovic appears to be settled as Juventus have reportedly had a 75 million euro bid accepted by Fiorentina. The move has been agreed in principle by Vlahovic himself and they are now moving into salary negotiations.

Things took a dark turn yesterday morning when some highly insulting and threatening graffiti was sprayed on a wall outside the Fiorentina training ground, warning the player that his time in Florence was over. It's not clear how much impact, if any, this had on his decision to join Fiorentina's most bitter rivals.

So what does this mean for Juve? In short, they have managed to bag one of Europe's three most promising strikers for what appears to be a bargain price. Given that they have been sorely missing a reliable goal scorer since the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo, this could make them unstoppable.

Elsewhere in the calciomercato, Inter seem to have been working to build one of Europe's most thrilling wide attacks, adding Atalanta's German left back Robin Gosens to their existing right back Dutchman Denzel Dumfries. Gosens moves from Atalanta after refusing a transfer to Newcastle, despite their wage offer being far higher than Inter's.

Have Atalanta signed their next Luis Muriel or Duvan Zapata? The Bergamaschi yesterday sealed the signature of Sassuolo's Ivorian winger Jeremie Boga For 18 million euros. The deal is on initial loan but with an obligation to buy at the end of this season.
Boga is one of Serie A's most gifted dribblers and can play anywhere across the front, similar to both Zapata and Muriel, who have been the foundations for Atalanta's rise up Serie A and into the Champions League.
The return of Mario Baloteli to the Azzurri has now been confirmed as his name was on the roster of players selected for Roberto Mancini's national team get together over the weekend.
No game is scheduled, it's just a 3-day gathering of the [players likely to form the squad for the World Cup playoffs in March.
Balotelli returns after three years away from the Azzurri and it's hoped that he will bring something different to the Italy attack.

  • I Will Always Love You! – Italian Football News 24 Jan 22
Milan and Juve draw 0-0 on San Siro's mu flat pitch while Napoli and Roma score 4 goals each.
Ciao, ragazzi! This is Andrew with your Calcio Daily for Monday January 24th, our 151st daily show in a row!

Before we begin, a reminder that Calcio Daily is the only daily Italian Football podcast. We have no ads, no sponsors and all our content is yours for free - we don't make you pay a Patreon subscription to listen.

Goals aplenty in yesterday's games with both Napoli and Roma banging in 4 apiece.

Napoli had the easier task, playing at home to this season's whipping boys, Salernitana.
Defender Juan Jesus scored his first goal for Napoli and only his fourth ever goal with a close range strike on 17. Salernitana drew level on 33 through Bonazzoli but a Dries Mertens penalty on the stroke of half time restored Napoli's lead. Just 2 minutes into the second hald, Rahmani swept in the third and the scoring was complete when Lorenzo Insigne scored from the spot.

Insigne's goal was celebrated by him running towards the nearest TV camera and shouting "I love you and I will always love you!". The goal also put him level with Diego Maradona as Napoli's third highest ever goal scorer on 115.

The biggest game of the weekend was at San Siro where 2nd placed Milan faced Juventus, who were looking to break into the top 4. The pitch at San Siro is increasingly becoming an issue, with both Milan managers saying it is not fit for purpose and Inter boss Inzaghi saying it could scupper their title hopes.

But the pitch was not the worst thing about this stinker of a game, both sides cancelling each other out to register a surprising 0-0 draw. Bad news for Milan as Zlatan left the field injured in the first half.

In the other games, Fiorentina and Cagliari drew 1-1, Spezia won again, beating Sampdoria 1-0 and Torino were held 1-1 by Sassuolo.

Serie A will now take a welcome break until February 6th, with a national team get together coming this weekend where we expect to see an appearance by Mario Balotelli.

  • Super Mario is Back! – Italian Football News 23 Jan 22
Super Mario is back as Mancini recalls Mario Balotelli to his next Italy squad.
Ciao, ragazzi! This is Andrew with your Calcio Daily for Sunday January 23rd, our 150th daily show in a row!
    balotelli #Super Mario
Before we begin, a reminder that Calcio Daily is the only daily Italian Football podcast. We have no ads, no sponsors and all our content is yours for free - we don't make you pay a Patreon subscription to listen.

One of the most controversial, explosive, fantastic and divisive players Italian football has ever produces is on the verge of a stunning recall to the Italy squad when they meet up in the forthcoming International break.
Super Mario Balotelli, currently plying his trade in the Turkish Super Lig after spells at both Milan clubs, Liverpool, Marseilles, Lyon and, of course, Manchester City where he set up that iconic Agueroooooo moment, has always been admired by Mancini. And now, Mancini could be turning to his friend to spearhead the Italy attack in the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against North Macedonia and then either Portugal or Turkey.
Mario has not played for Italy for three years and he celebrated the good news yesterday with a goal and an assist for Adana Demirspor.
Even in Mario's world, this news is a bombshell. It could backfire spectacularly on Mancini and make him look an utter idiot. On the other hand, Balotelli's last tournament for Italy was Euro 2012 when he utterly destroyed favourites Germany in the semi final.
Come on, Mario, one more time for Italy.
In Serie A, a late Edin Dzeko goal gave Inter a welcome win at home to Venezia, putting them 5 points ahead of Milan, who play Juventus tonight. Elsewhere, Lazio and Atalanta drew 0-0 and Genoa/Udinese finished 1-1.

A tug of war has broken out over Juventus' Argentinian star Paulo Dybala.
At one end of the rope is Dybala's former Juve Director and now Inter Director, Beppe Marotta. At the other end, another of Dybala's former Juve Director Fabio Paratici, who is now Sporting Director at Spurs.
The pair, who are now fighting over La Joya, initially fought together to bring him to Turin back in 2015. Both men had similar takes on the deal, worth €40 million from Palermo. Paratici described the deal as the riskiest of his career - amazing bearing in mind he convinced Juve to spend 100 million euros on Cristiano Ronaldo. Meanwhile Marotta recalls that his hands were shaking at the signing ceremony, so worried was he that the player would bomb.
This time, however, they are fighting over the player and a potential massive bargain free transfer at the end of the season.
Juventus appear to be happy to let Dybala go, withdrawing an offer previously presented to the player and are now even asking him to take a 15% pay cut until the end of the season, as they are with their other players whose contracts expire in the next 6 months.
So, Spurs or Inter? Dybala would improve almost any squad he joined. The question will always be whether he can stay injury-free for long enough to put in a sustained run of appearances.
In last night's Serie A game, Bologna's poor run continued as they blew a 1-0 lead to lose 2-1 at Verona. Sinisa Mihajlovic's side were missing a number of players and have now lost three in a row.

  • Cannavaro To Everton! – Italian Football News 21 Jan 22
Fabio Cannavaro emerges again as a front runner for a managerial job.
Ciao, ragazzi! This is Andrew with your Calcio Daily for Friday January 21st, our 148th daily show in a row!

World Cup winning captain, keen cyclist and serial job applyer Fabio Cannavaro is again in the running for a new role.
Il Capitano emerged yesterday as the front runner in the race to become Everton manager for the next three months after Rafa Benitez ended his stint in the manager's chair last weekend.
Cannavaro was said to be heading for the role Poland national coach but as much of a surprise as that news may have been, today's news is even wilder, but strangely in keeping with both Cannavaro and Everton.
His only managerial experience to date has been in China with Guanghzou FC, whom he left in September and although he has been offered work elsewhere in the world, it's Europe where he wants to test himself.
The Everton job has already been turned down by Jose Mourinho, while the Belgian FA refused Roberto Martinez' crazy offer of managing Everton while also managing the Belgium national team. Yet to be offered the job and turn it down are Wayne Rooney and Frank Lampard.
Some green shoots of action in the transfer market as Napoli are linked with a swoop for Empoli's Fabiano Parisi, Nedim Bajrami and Samuele Ricci. Jordan Veretout is on the brink of a move to Spurs, who could be letting Japhed Tanganga move to Milan on loan.
Meanwhile, Juventus midfielder Aaron Ramsey has recovered from Covid, which means he will now only miss their game against Milan through injury!
In the Coppa Italia, Roma recovered from 1-0 early on to beat 10-man Lecce.

  • Why No Transfers? – Italian Football News 20 Jan 22
Despite some of the biggest names in football months away from the end of their contracts, no major transfer moves have taken place in the three weeks of the transfer window.
Ciao, ragazzi! This is Andrew with your Calcio Daily for Thursday January 20th, our 147th daily show in a row!
Some of the biggest names in world football are coming to the end of their contracts in the summer, so this transfer window is their clubs' last chance to scrape a lower transfer fee for them or risk seeing them go for nothing in a few months.
    #transfers #calciomercato
With names such as Mbappe, Fati, Pogba and Rudiger in that position, we expected January to see some big name moves but so far, absolutely nothing.
Only Lorenzo Insigne, who turned down a contract on reduced terms to stay at Napoli, has sealed a move for the end of the season to Toronto FC and he may be joined by current teammate Dries Mertens. Players like Mauro Icardi, Erling Haaland and Dusan Vlahovic are not out of contract but are very much known to be looking for moves, yet nothing even on those fronts.
So what has to happen in order to get things moving? It could all hinge on just one big transfer completing before everything else can fall into place.
For example, Pogba leaving United would free up a big wage earner, allowing someone like Icardi or Haaland to come in. Just a hypothetical but either way, the last day of the transfer is either going to be spectacular or we are heading for a huge nothing burger!
In the Coppa Italia, Sassuolo knocked Cagliari out 1-0 thanks to a goal by Harroui and Inter squeezed past Empoli 3-2 after extra time.
