  • Ref Saves Barca! – Italian Football News 18 Feb 22
Barcelona handed a lifeline by the ref as they come back from a goal down to draw 1-1 against Napoli.
Ciao, ragazzi! This is Andrew with your Calcio Daily for Friday February 18th, our 176th daily show in a row!

Call the cops! A robbery took place in the region of the Camp Nou stadium in Barcelona last night, the victims were Napoli.
Napoli were away to Barcelona in their Europa League play off game and started as underdogs, despite their high league position and Barcelona claiming total poverty. Despite being totally skint, Barca were able to start their three new January signings – Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Adama Traore and the hilariously wasteful Ferran Torres.
Napoli were content to sit back and attack through Osimhen in the channels and on 29 minutes, Elmas' skill on the right played in Zielinski. The Pole's first shot was parried by Ter Stegen but Zielinski was first to the rebound and crashed it into the roof of the net with Osimhen screaming for the ball.
Despite there being an hour left, Napoli tried to preserve energy by protecting their lead. Coach Spaletti angered by his team's inability to keep the ball and retreat towards their own goal.
Ferran Torres had already headed wide when Adama Traore crossed the ball into the Napoli box on 57 minutes. Nobody thought anything of it but 30 seconds later, the ref was called to the pitchside screen by VAR. The ball had brushed the fingertip of Juan Jesus from a metre away. The ref decided he has made a clear and obvious error in not giving the penalty and pointed to the spot.
Torres put the penalty away and Barca sensed blood. They pressed more as Napoli were forced into more desperate defending. Torres was twice played in for clear scoring opportunities but shot over the bar twice. The sight of his manager's reactions won't make pleasant viewing.
After a bad injury to Fabien Ruiz in injury time caused further delay, the ref called it a day and we look forward to the return game in Naples next week.
Lazio were beaten 2-1 away to Porto and have an uphill climb to get into the next round. They took the lead through Zaccagni but goals from Joao Mario and Toni Martinez made the Portuguese side favourites to go through.
Finally, Atalanta were rocked early on when Olympiacos went a goal up against the run of play but two goals in two minutes from the surprising source of defender Berat Djimsiti turned the game around in favour of the Bergamaschi.
In Serie A, we have the Turin derby tonight, Juve expected to give Torino another solid thrashing.

  • Liverpool Too Hot For Inter! – Italian Football News 17 Feb 22
A brave performance from INter was not enough to stop Liverpool in the Champions League.
Ciao, ragazzi! This is Andrew with your Calcio Daily for Thursday February 17th, our 175th daily show in a row!
Before we begin, remember that Calcio Daily is a value for value podcast – you donate what you think the show is worth and the best way to do that is via the Fountain podcast app on iPhone or android, or you can buy each episode as an NFT on OpenSea, just search for Calcio Daily.
Inter Milan put in a heroic performance at San Siro last night in their Champions league Round of 16 game against Liverpool.
From the start, Liverpool struggled to find their aggressive attacking rhythm, Inter's press choking their usual supply to the front three. When they did get into the Inter box, they found the defensive trident of Skriniar, De Vrij and Bastoni in no mood to let them past, hurling themselves at the ball to block. De Vrij clearly suffering double vision after a bang on the head.
Indeed it was Inter who had the best chance of the first half, Calhanoglu finding some space in the box to shoot but the ball thundered back off the crossbar to safety. Perisic was having a great game, always popping up in clever positions and even having the better of Alexander-Arnold.
Jurgen Klopp made changes at half time, bringing on Roberto Firmino but it was his triple change on the hour, bringing on Diaz, Henderson and Keita, that gave Liverpool control on the field.
After a Skriniar block gave Liverpool a corner, Roberto Firmino flicked his header from the corner of the six yard box past Handanovic, who was badly wrong footed.
More poor keeping from Handanovic for Liverpool’s second, a cross from Alexander-Arnold was headed across the box by van Dijk for Salah to sweep in. The Inter keeper was mysteriously glued to the spot by his post as the ball rolled into the centre of his goal.
There was huge disappointment at the end for Inter, who will need every second of their recover time before their game on Sunday.
Some great games in the Europa League tonight, especially in Spain where Barcelona play Napoli. Elsewhere, Lazio are away to Porto while Atalanta are at home to Olympiacos.

  • How Good Are Inter? – Italian Football News 16 Feb 22
As the Italian champions host Liverpool in the Champions League, how can they compete with the best in Europe?
Ciao, ragazzi! This is Andrew with your Calcio Daily for Wednesday February 16th, our 174th daily show in a row!
Before we begin, remember that Calcio Daily is a value for value podcast – you donate what you think the show is worth and the best way to do that is via the Fountain podcast app on iPhone or android, or you can buy each episode as an NFT on OpenSea, just search for Calcio Daily.
The champions of Italy, Inter Milan, welcome one of Europe's footballing royalty tonight as Liverpool arrive at San Siro.
Having never been to the Milan stadium previously, Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp is making his second trip this season as his side played AC Milan in the group stages of the Champions League earlier this season.
Domestically, Liverpool are in second place behind a totally dominant Manchester City side, while Inter have just lost the lead they held in Serie A since November. They won the league last season by basing their entire attacking unit around Romelu Lukaku.
But Lukaku was not played as a target man. He would often move out wide, dragging defenders with him and opening up space in the middle for the likes of Eriksen, Sanchez and Martinez to occupy. It wasn't his pure power that won Inter the title, it was the clever way in which Conte harnessed and developed Lukaku's other talents.
Now that Lukaku has gone, Dzeko is the new attacking focus and the Bosnian has had a decent season. But he has never been the spectacular, standout striker than Lukaku can be. Neither is he the kind of thrilling forward that Liverpool have in abundance. In addition, Inter's biggest concern is the drop in contribution from Lautaro Martinez although that has been slightly offset by improvement from Alexis Sanchez.
Tonight's game looks very evenly balanced but there's no doubt that Inter are worried and go into the game seeing themselves as underdogs against the likes of Salah.
Inter are more than capable of keeping Liverpool at bay if their defence maintain high levels of concentration and they get enough support from the midfield, especially down the flanks where Robertson and Alexander-Arnold are dangerous but for me, this game will go down to how well Liverpool play and how Inter respond to that. I don't see Inter dominating the game and bringing it to Liverpool.

  • New Job For Pirlo? – Italian Football News 15 Feb 22
Andrea Pirlo emerges as the surprise favourite to take over at Salernitana.
Ciao, ragazzi! This is Andrew with your Calcio Daily for Tuesday February 15th, our 173rd daily show in a row!

Before we begin, remember that Calcio Daily is a value for value podcast – you donate what you think the show is worth and the best way to do that is via the Fountain podcast app on iPhone or android, or you can buy each episode as an NFT on OpenSea, just search for Calcio Daily.

Unsurprising news came out of the south of Italy yesterday as Salernitana announced the sacking of coach Stefano Colantuono, who was only given the job in October.

Salernitana were bottom of the table at the time and that's where Colantuono leaves them, having failed to spark any defensive solidity, nor any improvement going forward, despite the signing of Portuguese veteran Nani.

He won just two of his 15 matches in charge, losing 10.

The shock news was that the person who emerged as the frontrunner for the job of keeping awful Salernitana in Serie A is none other than the man who squeezed Juventus into the Champions League last season – Andrea Pirlo.

Reports suggest that Pirlo is open to taking the job on a long term contract and will not ask for a release cause if (or rather, when) Salernitana get relegated to Serie B.

Late drama in last night's final Serie A game of the weekend as Fiorentina scored at the end of 90 minutes to seal a 2-1 win over Spezia.

Piatek had the chance to open the scoring after 15 minutes when Fiorentina were awarded a penalty but he struck the spot kick against the post and Spezia cleared.

He got his goal just before the break, prodding home from close range.

Despite more Viola pressure in the second half, Kevin Agudelo robbed Amrabat on the half way line and did all the work himself, finishing neatly to draw Spezia level on 75 minutes but Amrabat redeemed himself a minute from the end of normal time when he squeezed his shot from the edge of the box inside the post.

This week sees Inter at home to Liverpool in the Champions League tomorrow night, while Napoli, Lazio and Atalanta play in the Europa League on Thursday.

  • Milan Top, Juve Draw – Italian Football News 14 Feb 22
Milan go top as Juventus and Atalanta draw.
Ciao, ragazzi! This is Andrew with your Calcio Daily for Monday February 14th, our 172nd daily show in a row!
Before we begin, remember that Calcio Daily is a value for value podcast – you donate what you think the show is worth and the best way to do that is via the Fountain podcast app on iPhone or android, or you can buy each episode as an NFT on OpenSea, just search for Calcio Daily.
Points shared again in yesterday's headline match between Atalanta and Juventus but Atalanta are furious with the result.
Juve started well, overwhelming the Atalanta defence with Sportiello pulling off a great save from a Vlahovic shot and the Juve number 9 was left raging when Dybala cut inside and elected to shoot rather than play in the new Juve number 7.
But the main incident of the half involved Juventus keeper Szcecesny. Koopmeijners was played through and as Szcecesny raced out, he brought down the Atalanta midfielder, miles outside his penalty box. VAR took a look and decided no action needed to be taken. To put it mildly, Atalanta disagreed.
They opened the scoring 15 minutes from time when a free kick 25 yards out was played sideways to Malinovskyi who smashed it in for 1-0 Atalanta. The home side hit the bar from close range and were punished for that miss in the 92nd minute when Danilo rose highest to head home a Dybala cross.
Gasperini refused to speak to the referee or the media after the game.
Earlier in the day, Milan took the chance to leapfrog Inter and Napoli to lead Serie A. Rafael Leao put through by his keeper Maignan to cut inside and slot it past Sampdoria keeper Falcone after just 8 minutes. It was an awful game full of annoying stoppages and feigned injuries but Milan will be happy with the result.
Draws between Genoa and Salernitana and Empoli/Cagliari while Verona thrashed Udinese 4-0.
Jose Mourinho's Roma escaped from the their game away to Sassuolo with a 2-2 draw after going a goal up in first half injury time.
A Smalling own goal drew Sassuolo level immediately after the break and Hamed Traore put them 2-1 up with 15 minutes to go. Sassuolo were reduced to 10 men when Ferrari received a second yellow card for a foul on Abraham and Roma drew level when Cristante's header was adjudged to have crossed the line before before being cleared.
There is one more game remaining in Serie A, Spezia at home to Fiorentina tonight.

  • Milan To Go Top?! – Italian Football News 13 Feb 22
Honours even as Napoli and Inter fought out a 1-1 draw in Naples.
Ciao, ragazzi! This is Andrew with your Calcio Daily for Sunday February 13th, our 171st daily show in a row!
Before we begin, remember that Calcio Daily is a value for value podcast – you donate what you think the show is worth and the best way to do that is via the Fountain podcast app on iPhone or android, or you can buy each episode as an NFT on OpenSea, just search for Calcio Daily.
The goals and the points were shared last night in the game between Napoli and Inter, handing Milan the chance to leapfrog both of them into first place when they play Sampdoria today.
Napoli dominated the first half and there was a strong sense that the solitary goal they had managed would likely not be enough to keep Inter at bay in the second half.
After just 5 minutes, Victor Osimhen was clipped in the box and although the ref didn't spot it, he was referred to the screen by VAR and pointed to the spot.
Insigne squeezed the penalty kick millimetres away from Handanovic's hand and inside the post to put the home side a goal up. They had further chances with Zielinski hitting the post and an excellent chance falling to Insigne, which he blasted over. For theit part, Inter created great chances for Dzeko and Dumfries.
A minute into the second half, Dzeko made a horrible mess of a Dumfries cross but he was first to react when his header came back off Koulibaly to smash the ball in off the crossbar. Harsh on Koulibaly who was absolutely immense throughout the game.
In truth, that was the end of the excitement. The second half was a drab affair, marked by the way Napoli decided not to pump the ball into the Inter box from a free kick with seconds to go, the referee's whistle blowing for full time as Spaletti was going crazy at his players for not going for it.
An early start for Milan sees them face Sampdoria but the game of the day is in Bergamo, where fifth-placed Atalanta will try to slow down the Juventus juggernaut. Juve boss Max Allegri has been talking about how well his new signings Dusan Vlahovic and Denis Zakaria have settles into the squad. Vlahovic, in particular, is saying the right things, saying that his teammates Morata and Dybala are an inspiration and while it might be early to speak of Juve pushing for the title, it's not impossible, especially with Juve's history of 'surprising' victories.
Another interesting game with be between Sassuolo and Roma. Mourinho needs a win after some poor results and he is alleged to have read the riot act to his players after their defeat to Inter in the Coppa Italia, accusing them of being timid when they face bigger teams.

  • Top Two Clash! – Italian Football News 12 Feb 22
It's second versus first in Serie A tonight as Napoli host leaders Inter.
Ciao, ragazzi! This is Andrew with your Calcio Daily for Saturday February 12th, our 170th daily show in a row!
Before we begin, remember that Calcio Daily is a value for value podcast – you donate what you think the show is worth and the best way to do that is via the Fountain podcast app on iPhone or android, or you can buy each episode as an NFT on OpenSea, just search for Calcio Daily.
It's a big weekend in Serie A with four of the top five facing up against each other.
First up, and certainly the biggest game of this round is in Naples where second-place Napoli host leaders Inter with just a point between the two teams, although Inter do have a game in hand over the Neapolitans.
Napoli have for years been Italy's nearly men, most notably in 2018 when a stunning injury-time Koulibaly header in Turin gave them a win over Juventus to leap frog them in the league with three games to go but Napoli collapsed and Juve won the title again.
Since then, Napoli have fallen away and have finished outside the top four but this season, they started spectacularly well, winning their first 8 games until they fell away in November.
But they refuse to written out of the title race, despite all talk being of which Milan club will win the scudetto.
Inter took a few weeks to find their feet under new coach Simone Inzaghi, but very quickly became the dominant force in Serie A and even look better than they did under Conte last season.
Koulibaly returns to the Napoli defence after lifting the Africa Cup of Nations and Osimhen is available to start. Tonight's game will not decide the scudetto but it will determine if Napoli have the belief required to go for the title.

  • Vlahovic Sets Up Viola Clash! – Italian Football News 11 Feb 22
A late winner in the Coppa Italia from Vlahovic sets up a semi final against his old club.
Ciao, ragazzi! This is Andrew with your Calcio Daily for Friday February 11th, our 169th daily show in a row!

Quite an evening in the Coppa Italia, resulting in Fiorentina and Juventus going through to face each other in the semi final, where Dusan Vlahovic will face up against his former team.

Fiorentina travelled to Bergamo where Atalanta conceded an early penalty. VAR called the ref's attention to a foul in the box and the spot kick was given, slotted home by Piatek.

On the half hour, Zappacosta scored with a stunning strike from the corner of the box to level things up and in the second half, it looked good for Atalanta when new signing Boga scored his first goal for the club. Boga doing all the work himself with a beautiful dribble and deft finish into the top corner.

On 71 minutes, a second penalty for Fiorentina and Piatek was saved by Musso but the Pole was first to the rebound to bring Fiorentina level but they were harshly reduced to 10 men when Martinez was given a second yellow, despite seeming to clearly get the ball first.

The final drama took place deep into stoppage time when a Fiorentina free kick was lobbed forward, Atalanta couldn't deal with it and defender Milenkovic put away a lovely strike from the edge of the box to win the game.

Next, over to Turin for Juve's tie against Sassuolo.

Juve captain Paulo Dybala scuffed his shot over the keeper after just 3 minutes to give his side the lead but after that, it was al Sassuolo. Two fine saves from Perin kept Juve ahead but there was nothing he could do when Traore cut in from the left to curl it past the Juve keeper and into the top corner for 1-1.

Late drama when, with two minutes to play, Vlahovic was played into the corner. He wriggled his way past De Sciglio into the box and his wayward shot was deflected into his own net by Ruan to put Juventus through.

The semi finals look fantastic, a Milan derby and Fiorentina versus Juventus, both ties are over two legs, the first taking place on the second of March, the second leg taking plkace on April 20th.

  • Milan Thrash Lazio! – Italian Football News 10 Feb 22
An injury to Ciro Immobile rounded off a miserable night for Lazio.
Ciao, ragazzi! This is Andrew with your Calcio Daily for Thursday February 10th, our 168th daily show in a row!

An Olivier Giroud double helped Milan to a 4-0 win over Lazio in the Coppa Italia and the scoreline wasn't even the worst event of the night for Maurizio Sarri.

A fantastic through ball from Romagnoli put Leao through to finish calmly on 24 minutes, after which point Giroud took over.

He put away a Leao cross from close range on 41 and did the same again to a beautiful cross from Hernandez in first half stoppage time.

That's four goals in a week for Giroud.

Kessie rounded off the scoring 11 minutes from time, finishing from the edge of the box after Lazio couldn't clear a Maldini free kick.

At the 3-0 mark, Ciro Immobile went down after a collision with a Milan defender. He did play on after treatment but sat down minutes later to be subbed, clearly in pain.

If Immobile is going to be out for a while, Lazio will be left without a senior striker in their squad. Italy coach Roberto Mancini was in the stands for the game and will have been concerned to see Immobile injured.

Two interesting games in the Coppa tonight as Atalanta host Fiorentina and Juve play Sassuolo.

  • Jose Returns To Inter! – Italian Football News 9 Feb 22
An emotional return to the scene of his famous 2010 treble for Jose Mourinho.
Ciao, ragazzi! This is Andrew with your Calcio Daily for Wednesday February 9th, our 167th daily show in a row!
Before we begin, remember that Calcio Daily is a value for value podcast – you donate what you think the show is worth and the best way to do that is via the Fountain podcast app on iPhone or android, or you can buy each episode as an NFT on OpenSea, just search for Calcio Daily.
When Jose Mourinho guided INter to two Scudettos in 2009 and 2010, they were totally expected.
Juventus had been relegated due to influencing referees and the likes of Roma were inconsistent.
But when he guided them to the Champions League in 2010, it was truly astonishing.
Last night, Mourinho returned to San Siro for the first time since he left Inter for Real Madrid immediately after the Champions League final, bringing his Roma side there for a Coppa Italia tie.
Italian fans love nostalgia and Jose gave Inter plenty to be nostalgic about. The reception he was given as he exited the tunnel and took his place on the opposition bench was deserving of a man who brought them such success. Jose returned the gesture with kisses to the crowd.
The game itself went to Inter, who scored two great goals.
After just two minutes, Perisic found space down the left and hammered his cross into the box. Dezko got on the end of it, guiding a beautiful volley past Rui Patricio. Dezko not celebrating as a former Roma player. Inter nearly scored two amazing goals from distance, Barella's smashing the bar, but their second came after 58 minutes when former Mourinho player, Alexis Sanchez, found the top corner from 25 yards out.
More action at San Siro tonight as Milan play Lazio in the Coppa Italia.
