A bad night for Gigio Donnarumma as PSG are dumped out by Real Madrid.
Ciao, ragazzi! This is Andrew with your Calcio Daily for Thursday March 10th, our 196th daily show in a row!

The day started very well for Gigio Donnarumma. Told that he would be starting his second consecutive Champions League game for PSG. Sparking a wide belief that this was the star of him becoming number one ahead of Kaylor Navas.
His teammate Mbappe had put his side 2-0 up on aggregate in the 38th minute away to Real Madrid and life looked good.
On 60 minutes, Hachimi played the ball back to Donnarumma and the Real press took over. Carlo Ancelotti had told his team to put the Italian keeper under pressure and Karim Benzema managed to block Gigio's clearance.
The ball rebounded to Vinicius Junior who squared it back to Benzema to score.
On 75, Benzema struck the ball high into the PSG net and 11 seconds later, Benzema's hat trick and Real's comeback was complete.
The focus will be on Donnarumma but PSG were collectively culpable, running around like headless chickens at times, especially for Real's third goal.
It's a sad chapter for Donnarumma in a tough first season in Paris. Gigio is an outstanding keeper and there was a strong claim for a foul on him for the first goal, a wicked deflection for the second and utter defensive madness from Marquinhos for the third.
Back in Italy, Paulo Dybala's on/off/on/off contract renewal at Juve currently seems to be off as the club has postponed a meeting to discuss the contract with his agent.
What is strange to me is that Dybala is out of contract in just three months and is free to speak to other clubs yet there has been no rumour about foreign interest in the player. Only Inter so far seem ready to move for the Argentinian in the Summer.

Martinez strike gave Inter hope, but Sanchez red card blunted their attack.

Inter were up against it, 2-0 down from the first leg and now away to Liverpool, who had not lost at home for a year.

Liverpool hit the bar through Matip and the post through Mohamed Salah but Inter had a game plan that might be copied by other teams in the coming months – moving the ball swiftly to get around the Liverpool press and pushing down the flanks to keep the reds' wing-backs at bay.

A Calhanoglu strike bounced uncomfortably in front of Alisson but the Brazilian keeper parried it away well.

An incident of note was the yellow card given to Alexis Sanchez for a nasty foul on Thiago, the Chilean running his studs down the back of the Spaniard's calf. Sanchez was lucky to escape a red for the challenge.

On 60 minutes, Lautaro was fed with a decent chance but his poor shot deflected wide off the heel of Andy Robertson. But two minutes later, a stunning goal by Martinez.

Receiving the ball near the left hand corner of the box, he let the ball run across him and with van Dijk watching, he struck across the ball to give it pace and height, the ball sailing over Alisson and under his bar inside the far post.

The Inter fans were going wild, but within a minute, Alexis had managed to cool their celebrations.

Another wild challenge saw him just get the ball, but he followed through on Fabinho. The ref had no choice but to show a second yellow and then a red.

Inter's chances were over but even with 10 men, they were comfortable, just not able to exert any late pressure on the reds.

So, Inter come away with a creditable win but it really could have been so much more.

  • Inter’s Mission Impossible! – Italian Football News 8 Mar 22
This show is available as an NFT! - https://opensea.io/collection/calcio-daily?search[sortAscending]=false&search[sortBy]=LISTING_DATE
Simone Inzaghi takes his men to Anfield, hoping to overturn a 2-0 deficit from the first leg.
Ciao, ragazzi! This is Andrew with your Calcio Daily for Tuesday March 8th, our 194th daily show in a row!

Hey! Send us a donation via the Fountain podcast app and subscribe to the channel on YouTube! You can also buy today's show as an NFT, the link is in the description.

Tonight sees Inter Milan attempt Mission Impossible in the Champions League.

After a great start to their Round of 16 home leg against Liverpool 3 weeks ago, their failure to score cost them heavily as Liverpool scored twice in the final 15 minutes to take a 2-0 advantage back to Anfield.

As well as bookmaker's odds, history is against Inter.

Only once in the history of the competition has a team recovered from losing 2-0 at home in the first leg to go through to the next round – Ole's Manchester United, who beat PSG 3-1 away in their second leg three years ago.

The tiniest glimmer of hope that Inzaghi's men have is the confidence they would have gained from thumping Salernitana 5-0 on Friday, especially the fact that Lautaro Martinez ended his horrible run of goalscoring with a hat trick and his strike partner Edin Dzeko weighing in with a brace.

But if the boot were on the other foot, you wouldn't be hearing Jurgen Klopp saying that he felt confident because they had just beaten Norwich but hey, you have to take what you can.

While Inter would love to stay in the competition, going out would be no bad thing, leaving them with one less competition to play in the run up to the wrapping up of Italy's domestic season.

  • Napoli Humbled By Milan – Italian Football News 7 Mar 22

Napoli in danger of falling away after Milan dominate them at home.
Ciao, ragazzi! This is Andrew with your Calcio Daily for Monday March 7th, our 193rd daily show in a row!

In front of Napoli's biggest home game of the season, with the Ultras ending their self-imposed stadium ban and top of the league at stake, Napoli again fluffed their lines.
A fast-thinking Olivier Giroud settled the game just after half time when he deflected Davide Calabria's horribly miscued shot past Ospina into the net.
Napoli started the brightest, with a high tempo and slick passing but they didn't create any clear chances. Milan held out comfortably and built from there.
After the goal, Napoli tried to bring the game to Milan but a mixture of poor passing choices, tiredness and solid Milan defending kept Napoli at bay.
The win for Milan puts them top, two points ahead of Inter with Napoli a further point away. Juventus, who managed a 1-0 win at home to Spezia, are in fourth place, four points behind Napoli.
Elsewhere, there were 0-0 draws between Genoa and Empoli as well as Bologna and Torino. Fiorentina drew 1-1 with Verona and Venezia were heavily beaten, losing 4-1 at home by Sassuolo.
The only midweek game this week is in the Champions League where Inter have a mountain to climb against Liverpool. Already 2-0 down from the game at San Siro, they must travel to Anfield and win by three goals or more in order to progress.

A quick roundup of last night's results as we build up to the main event of the weekend tonight - Napoli vs Milan!

Result of the day was undoubtedly Roma's 1-0 win over Atalanta courtesy of a Tammy Abraham goal - his 13th league goal of the season. Martin de Roon talked himself into a red card in injury time, quickly followed by Mkhitaryan who got his second yellow for a deliberate handball. Amazingly, Roma are now above Atalanta in 5th place.

Udinese raced to a 2-0 lead at home to Sampdoria Deulofeu and Udogie. Caputo pulled one back on 13 minutes but they couldn't get a second to level up.

Finally, a solid 3-0 win for improving Lazio against lowly Cagliari

  • Inter Send A Signal! – Italian Football News 5 Mar 22
Ciao, ragazzi! This is Andrew with your Calcio Daily for Friday March 5th, our 191st daily show in a row!

Serie A needed one of the frontrunners to administer a solid thrashing to send a sign to the other teams at the top.
Inter just needed to score a goal after going without one for three matches.
Last night, both needs were satisfied with a tremendous 5-0 beating of lowly Salernitana at San Siro. 5 much-needed goals , including a hattrick for out of form Lautaro Martinez and a brace for Edin Dzeko.
It could all have been so different though when, after 3 minutes, Milan Djuric was put through by an excellent ball from Kastanos. He slipped it to Simone Verdi who wasted the chance to go 1-0 up with an awful shot over the bar.
Martinez signalled his intent when he smashed a shot against the bar and then on 22 minutes, he scored his and Inter's first goal.
Barella played him through behind the Salernitana defence and he finished with great confidence across Sepe.
18 minutes later, Martinez again and 2-0 Inter.
Barella again the creator, again slicing the visitors open and Martinez this time holding off the defender to finish with a crisp left foot shot.
10 minutes into the second half, Dzeko took a position out wide, His cross into the box found Martinez dashing across his marker to finish for his hat trick.
With his hat trick complete, Martinez passed the mantle to his strike partner.
New signing Robin Gosens squared for the Bosnian to score number four and on 69 minutes, Barella put Dumfries away down the right, his cross took out four defenders and found his number 9 in the box to round off the scoring.
A lot of things came together for Inter and it looks ominous for the final straight of the season.
The nature of the win has given Inter new found belief ahead of the Champions League game away to Liverpool, where they seek to overturn a 2-0 deficit.

A quiet day on the Serie A front but a great game coming up tonight.

Sometimes, Italian football has a day when so much happens, it's hard to keep up. Transfer speculation, poorly-advised comments in the Press, scandal and huge games of football.
Other days, literally nothing happens and yesterday, my friends, was one of those days.
Some interesting discussion about the European Super League that don't amount to a great deal, players at Serie A clubs being looked at by other clubs, players at other clubs being looked at by Serie A clubs, but nothing of great heft.
We do have a game tonight, though, with improving Salernitana visiting San Siro to play third-places Inter, who can go top if they win.
Salernitana brought in Davide NIcola as coach three games ago in an attempt to stave off what looks to be a certain relegation back to Serie B and indeed, they are on a run of four consecutive draws but they remain 10 points away from safety although they do have two games in hand on 17th-placed Cagliari.
Two months ago, this fixture was a foregone conclusion but with Inter in the midst of a poor run and Salernitana possibly coming out of one, we have an interesting game on our hands.

Vlahovic's return ends in victory for Juve courtesy of a last minute own goal.
Ciao, ragazzi! This is Andrew with your Calcio Daily for Thursday March 3rd, our 189th daily show in a row!
Hey! Send us a donation via the Fountain podcast app and subscribe to the channel on YouTube!
A heart-breaking last-minute own goal from Fiorentina's Lorenzo Venuti gave Juventus a 1-0 win in their Coppa Italia semi final first leg in Florence.
When a cross from the right came into the box, Venuti simply could not get out of the way and despite his desperate lunge, he couldn't stop the ball from crossing the line.
Seconds later, after the final whistle, Venuti left the pitch in tears but the man who comforted him was a surprise.
It was Juve striker Dusan Vlahovic, returning to the fans who once adored him yet now have nothing but pure hatred for him since they perceived him to have betrayed them by joining their most bitter rivals.
You have to say that Vlahovic has some balls. He was the last player to leave the pitch after the warm up. Taking centre stage for a final free kick drill, he twice ran up to the ball to a cacophony of boos and whistles from the home fans before pausing and starting his run up again.
On the third attempt, he curled it into the top corner, then turning and running to the stairs that lead from the field of play to the dressing rooms.
There was certainly no hiding, at least before the game.
During the game, Vlahovic was quiet, a 55th-minute flick being his main contribution to the game.
The own goal gives Juve a big advantage as it means that Fiorentina now have to go to Turin around April 20th and win by at least two goals.
With the Coppa Italia out of the way, how does the weekend look in Serie A?
Clearly, the headline game is on Sunday between Napoli and Milan, but the weekend kicks off on Friday and the fact that Inter are at home to bottom of the table Salernitana mean that when the game in Naples kicks off, both teams could have dropped a place if Inter win, as they are expected to do.
Salernitana have certainly improved since their change of coach but it's a stretch to think that they might win at San Siro.
Then on Saturday, the game that stands out is in Rome, where Roma host Atalanta. Roma are simply no good at the moment, scraping points from games where they deserve nothing and Mourinho's luck might be running out.

Coppa Italia derby ends in a drab 0-0 draw.
Ciao, ragazzi! This is Andrew with your Calcio Daily for Wednesday March 2nd, our 188th daily show in a row!

Last night's Coppa Italia semi final between Milan and Inter was something of a nothing burger. Both teams were short of form, especially Inter, and neither will be satisfied with the game or with the result.
Away goals still count double in the competition, so Inter will be disappointed to have drawn 0-0 away, as it means that any score draw in the second leg will see Milan through. Although the game did see a debut for January signing Robin Gosens.
Milan themselves will be annoyed as they edged it in terms of possession and chances, Handanovic doing well to parry away a trademark cut in from the left and shot by Leao. Inter's most notable statistic is that they had a full squad to choose from.
Tonight's affair between Fiorentina and Juventus will be a different affair and to a degree, the result is not the most important element. The return to Florence of Dusan Vlahovic, five weeks after he engineered his move from Fiorentina to Juventus is all that is being talked about. How does he feel about it? What does his manager think about it? What do his teammates think about it?
The man himself is said to be relaxed at the prospect of facing the fans but those fans will certainly not be in the mood to forgive or forget.
"It's not in our DNA," said fan club coordinator Federico De Sinopoli, "There will be a reaction, whether it’s a jeer or a chant or a whistle, but it will be there."
The club have pleaded with the fans not to use racist slants against Vlahovic, but that request is expected to be ignored.
In Serie A, tickets for the top of the table clash between Napoli and Milan sold out within minutes. Capacity has increased to 75% and this is the biggest game Naples has seen for 4 years.
Spalletti is hoping to get the likes of Osimhen and Lobotka back to full fitness before Sunday.

Atalanta ease past Sampdoria to remind us all that they are still in the race.

A couple of goals from Teun Koopmeiners helped Atalanta easily beat Sampdoria 4-0 last night, a result that puts them to within a game in hand win of moving ahead of fourth-placed Juventus.
Atalanta have had an awful start to 2022, despite being Italy's only remaining representatives in the UEFA Europa League. But that two-legged win over Olympiacos might have been the spark that relit their season.
Mario Pasalic scored the opener early on, added to on 29 by Koopmeiners' first goal, a good finish from the corner of the box.
The Dutchman put the game to bed on 61 minutes and a late Miranchuk goal added some gloss to the result.
Good to see Atalanta going for it again, like the Atalanta of a couple of years ago. They might still have a say in the Champions League places this season.
More rumours in Italy about the future of Napoli striker Victor Osimhen. Just before the end of that transfer window, Arsenal were linked with a move for him, but recently another Premier League big gun has been mentioned as a potential suitor for Osimhen.
Aside from Dusan Vlahovic, Osimhen is arguably Serie A's standout star this season with his mixture of power, pace and intelligence, he has become the focal point of everything Napoli do when he is on the pitch. But he can do that on the deck when Napoli are passing it well and also late in matches when they tend to go a bit more direct.
The fee mentioned is 100 million Euros, incredible given that Juve paid only 70 million for Vlahovic.
Tonight sees a Coppa Italia Milan derby as Milan host Inter in the first leg of the semi final. Napoli will probably enjoy this game more than anyone as they watch on from home with no midweek commitments left this season.
