In the 95th minute of Napoli's Serie A game away to Lazio last night, a shiny, bald head emerged from a sea of players, medics, puffer jackets and bibs.

It was the head of Napoli coach Luciano Spalletti, who had seen his side pegged back to 1-1 with 2 minutes of normal time, fully playing their expected role as serial chokers.

Yet in the fifth minute of injury time, Elmas broke forward, found Insigne who squared it to Fabian Ruiz whose left-footed curler from outside the box was a thing of beauty. Bending around the Lazio defender, just inside Strakosha's post.

The scenes were absolutely wild, it seems that the whole of Naples was gathered in that corner of the Stadio Olimpico to celebrate.

Chokers no more, Napoli were top of the league.

Insigne had opened the scoring in an open and entertaining game, adding a second minutes later before VAR chalked that one off for offside. Lazio had some great chances and tested Ospina many times but all that mattered was the win. Napoli now top on 57 points, the same as Milan who have a lower goal difference of six. Two points behind then sit Inter with a game in hand, a further 5 points back are Juventus.

It is mighty, might close.

Earlier in the day, Jose Mourinho had used up all his luck with a 99th minute penalty awarded to Roma courtesy of a very hotly disputed Tammy Abraham penalty. The award was confirmed by VAR, Abraham calmly slotting home his 12th goal in a decent season for him.

Another striker who is having a great season is Giovanni Simeone, who scored another hat trick for Verona, his second of the season, in a 3-1 home win against Venezia, for whom Okereke scored and Cagliari put three points of daylight between themselves and the relegation spots with a 2-1 win away to Torino.

Atalanta v Sampdoria tonight will finish off this round of Serie A matches.

This week sees the first legs of the Coppa Italia semi finals. Milan host Inter tomorrow night while Fiorentina will host Juventus and former striker Dusan Vlahovic tomorrow night.

You hear that sound? It's the sound of a gang of marauders dressed in black and white, getting closer and closer.....

 

Their leader has a smile like that of a shark and his name is Max Allegri.

 

While the clumsy trident of Milan, Inter and Napoli are busy stumbling over each other down the final straight of the Serie A season, Allegri's Juve have successfully kicked Atalanta out of the top four and have the top three firmly in their sights.

 

Last night, they overcame a spirited Empoli side to win 3-2 and move to within just 4 points of Napoli who are in third place but themselves have a chance to hit top spot tonight away to Lazio.

 

Goals from Moise Kean and a brace from Dusan Vlahovic gave Juve the win but it was a close run thing. Empoli had periods of great pressure and the win was not certain at any point until the final whistle.

 

Earlier in the day, Salernitana scored another spirit-raising draw at home to Bologna. Marco Arnautovic scored his second goal in two games but the southerners took a point courtesy of a Zortea goal 20 minutes from time.

 

But if it’s entertainment you want, you only have to check the fixtures, see when Sassuolo are playing and watch their match. They have been involved in some of the best games this season and last night, their 2-1 win over Fiorentina had tonnes of late drama.

 

Sassuolo went ahead on 19 minutes through a finely placed Hamed Traore goal and they hit the bar shortly after.

 

Late in the second half, Bonaventura was red carded shortly after coming on as a substitute and the game looked lost but on 87 minutes, another signing, Cabral, slid in the scramble the ball in from Saponara’s dangerous cross and it looked like the 10 men had salvaged the draw.

 

Even more drama in the 3rd minute of injury time when Gregoire Defrel found a yard in the Fiorentina box to head home a superb Berardi cross.

 

Tonight former Napoli boss Maurizio Sarri hosts his former club as Lazio boss. With Juve breathing down their necks and gaining more belief every week, they have to take this title challenge seriously.

Last night was all about the Milan clubs as both AC and Inter were in action. 

 

First up were leaders Milan, who hosted Udinese in a decent game but Milan certainly lacked an edge. Giroud was ineffective up front and his replacement, Rebic, didn't fare much better. 

 

The sides were evenly matched when a ball to the far post from Tonali found Leao who fired past Udinese keeper Silvestri for 1-0 on 29 minutes. 

 

Beto saw his header saved towards the end of the first half but Udinese made Milan work hard in the second half and on 69 minutes, a clever overhead pass into the box from Pereira found Udogie right in front of Mike Maignan to sneak the ball over the line with his torso. 

 

Udinese came closest to winning it but a draw was a fair result. 

 

The result gave Inter had the chance to sneak into first place on goal difference, as long as they could beat Genoa. 

 

Sirigu in the Genoa goal was tested early on by Calhanoglu, who went close again minutes later. Gudmundsson had Genoa's best chance in the first half but waited way too long before deciding to shoot, eventually getting crowded out by Inter defenders. 

 

Melegoni brought a great save out of Handanovic at the end of the first half and at 0-0, we waited for the Inter breakthrough. 

 

In the second half, D'Amdbrosio's header came crashing off the Genoa bar and Genoa were creating chances themselves but they were far less clear cut that Inter's. A Martinez shot was parried over and that was the last of the action. 

 

Inzaghi couldn't understand the result, saying “Genoa were not easy to break down, but we got into their penalty area 37 times, had 20 shots, hit the crossbar, there were other chances too that could easily have gone in." 

 

Napoli again have the chance to go top tomorrow. If they beat Lazio tomorrow night, they will go level on points with Milan but claim the top spot on goal difference. 

 

It seems this year that NOBODY wants to win Serie A!

Barca thrash naive Napoli and Lazio fail against Porto, leaving only Atalanta in the Europa League.

It was a really poor night for Italian teams in the Europa League playoffs. After the dust had cleared, Italy was left with only Atalanta remaining in the competition. 

 

Napoli were thrashed 4-2 at home by a dominant Barcelona after being pressured into conceding two early goals. They did pull a goal back via a Lorenzo Insigne penalty but went a further goal down by half time. 

 

An Aubameyang belter in the second half sealed the deal before Politano scored a final consolation for Napoli. 

 

The silver lining for Napoli is that they can now focus on Serie A without the extra games of the Europa League or Coppa Italia. 

 

The same is true for Lazio, who were eliminated from the competition after a 2-2 draw at home to Porto, who were 2-1 up from the first leg. 

 

An early Immobile goal was cancelled out by a Taremi penalty but the crucial goal was scored by Porto's Uribe with 20 minutes to go, meaning that Lazio had to score twice.  

 

Cataldi did get a goal late into injury time but that was not enough to keep Lazio in the competition. 

 

Italy's flag bearers are now Atalanta who made light work of a tricky away tie, beating Olymipacos 3-0 for a 5-1 aggregate win. Maehle put Atalanta ahead minutes before half time and a quick fire double from Malinovskyi in the 66th and 69th minute rounded off a good win for Atalanta. 

 

Roma are still in the Europa Conference League and, along with Atalanta, will find out who they meet in their next round of that competition in the draw that takes place today. 

 

Both Milan clubs are in action tonight and should get easy wins. Leaders Milan are at home to Udinese while Inter are away to Genoa, who need the points to climb out of the relegation spots.

Tonight's game in Naples between Napoli and Barcelona in the Europa League playoff sees two clubs united by one man.

The Napoli stadium is now named after Diego Maradona after his death 18 months ago, the Argentinian wizard joining Napoli from Barcelona in 1984 for a huge £6.9 million.

The two clubs have not played each other much since then but the fans have remained close. That friendly rivalry will be set aside tonight with the clubs locked at 1-1 – the winners going through to the knock out round of the competition. History is against Napoli as they have never beaten Barca in a competitive game.

Barcelona forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang lived for a number of years in Milan as his father was a scout at the club. Indeed, he was on Milan's books as a youngster although he never played for the first team.

Elsewhere, Atalanta travel to Greece to face Olympiacos with a 2-1 advantage from the first leg while Lazio must overcome a 2-1 first leg deficit to go through against FC Porto.

When Dusan Vlahovic moved from Fiorentina to Juventus in January, the chance to play in the Champions League was a huge factor. But how would the young Serb fare against Europe's elite? How would he handle the step up?

Well, we only had to wait 33 seconds because that's how long it took Vlahovic to run through the Villareal defence, bring down a long ball from Adrien Rabiot and drill a shot while running away from goal, past Rulli in the Villareal goal and inside the far post.

33 seconds!

Vlahovic wheeled away, making a mouth gesture with his hands to silence his doubters.

The game itself finished 1-1, Dani Parejo levelling on 66 minutes.

It was a decent result for Juve, but not for Weston McKennie or Adrien Rabiot.

McKennie suffered a suspected double fracture after a heavy tackle and is likely out for the season. Rabiot, aside from the pass for Vlahovic's goal, will be remembered for letting his man get away from him for the equalising goal and being fortunate not to be red carded after a bad foul on Chukwueze.

The second leg takes place in three weeks.

Serie A’s 2022 - 2023 season will kick off on the weekend of August 13th, with a break scheduled from November 13th to the start of January to accommodate the Qatar World Cup. That’s whether the Azzurri qualify for the world cup or not.

Talking about qualification, Azzurri coach Roberto Mancini has been arranging informal dinners with regional groups of his squad members. On Monday evening, he broke bread with players based around Milan and Bergamo, continuing on to meet with players in Turin and in Rome.

The aim is to discuss the importance of the upcoming World Cup qualifiers, with the game against North Macedonia in a month's time.

Does nobody want to win Serie A?

After Juventus missed the chance to consolidate their place in fourth position, Atalanta failed to catch up with Juve in the Champions League spots, Milan passed on the opportunity to go 4 points clear and Inter tripped up when they could have gone top with a win, it was Napoli's chance last night to grab a statement win against Cagliari that would put them top of the league.

Napoli being Napoli, they failed. It was clear early on that Napoli were going to struggle with many of their expected starters missing, including Insigne, who had picked up a muscle injury in training.

Joao Pedro was a constant threat and carved out a couple of decent chances but Napoli were happy to go in level at half time. Everything changed on 58 minutes when Gaston Pereira struck a shot from outside the box. It bounced just ahead of Napoli keeper Ospina, who couldn't handle the bounce and looked on in horror as the ball went over him and into his net.

Spaletti was in no mood to surrender and threw on three subs 10 minutes later, including Osimhen and Ruiz, who had not started due to their fitness levels.

On 87, Osimhen made his game-saving contribution. The excellent Mario Rui pinged a cross from the left to the far post where the Nigerian striker rose above the Cagliari defenders to head home, Cragno getting a hand on it but not able to keep it out.

Napoli move level with Inter, two points behind leaders Milan.

In yesterday's other game, a Marco Arnautovic double saw Bologna come from a goal down against Spezia to win 2-1, a result which puts Spezia a bit closer to the bad end of the table, they are now just 4 points ahead of third-bottom Venezia, who have a game in hand.

Tonight, Juve face Villareal away in the Champions League last 16, which will be Dusan Vlahovic's Champions League debut.

Last night, Inter had the chance to return to the top of the league at home to Sassuolo. But their opponents absolutely bossed the game, Sassuolo running out 2-0 winners after a controlled, energetic display. 

 

After just 6 minutes, two of Sassuolo's diamond three – Berardi and Raspadori – combined, Raspadori firing past Handanovic who again, should have done much better. 

 

On 26 minutes it was 2-0. Inter's defensive line collapsed as Scamacca snuck in between De Vrij and Perisic, who stood still with a hopeful arm in the air as the Sassuolo striker headed home Traore's cross. 

 

Inter tried to get back in the game but also had to deal with constant pressure from Sassuolo. Skriniar did score deep in injury time but it was ruled out for an earlier attacking handball. 

 

Fiorentina continued to shrug off the departure of Dusan Vlahovic with an impressive 1-0 win against Atalanta, another goal from Krystof Piatek separating the sides. Fury on the Atalanta bench as their equaliser was chalked off by VAR for offside of a player who did not touch the ball. Atalanta boss Gasperini was red carded for his protests, as well as imposing a media blackout in protest at recent refereeing decisions that have gone against his club. 

 

Genoa came back from a goal down at Venezia to claim a point but remain in the bottom two and there was a 1-1 draw between Udinese and Lazio. 

 

At the top, Milan, Inter and Napoli are separated by 3 points and the leadership of Serie A could change almost every game day. That's what makes this the best league in the world! Napoli play Cagliari tonight and have a chance to go top. 

 

The final game in Serie A this weekend is Bologna v Spezia.

Milan are shocked in Salerno, Mourinho's kids get him out of jail in Serie A.

This Serie A weekend keeps on surprising us and last night was probably the biggest so far as bottom of the league Salernitana held leaders Milan to a 2-2 draw in their first game under new boss Davide Nicola.

When Junior Massias converted a Theo Hernandez cross in the 5th minute, everyone feared an absolute spanking but Salernitana regrouped and indeed took the game to Milan. Their equaliser came on 29 minutes when a deep cross from the right was badly misjudged by Milan keeper Steve Maignan, who took out Milan Djuric as he managed to head the ball towards goal. It popped up for Bonazzoli to smash home a spectacular overhead volley which Hernandez tried in vain to keep out.

Djuric recovered from the heavy impact and in the 72nd minute, he rose above the Milan defenders to head home a great cross from Mazzocchi to put Salernitana 2-1 up. The lead didn't last long though, Ante Rebic crashed home Giroud's knock down from 20 yards out.

In Rome, Mourinho was already under pressure but after 20 minutes of their home game against Verona, he found himself under even more pressure at 2-0 down!

A neatly-worked Verona free kick ended with the ball being slammed home by Barak from close range. 15 minutes later, another beautiful Verona move ended the same way, this time Tameze firing into the roof of the net for 2-0.

In the second half, Roma's kids got him out of jail. On 65, 18 year-old Cristian Volpato fired in from the edge of the penalty box through a crowd of players and on 84 minutes, when a Roma corner was cleared to 19 year old Edoardo Bove, he took it to an ever-narrowing angle and seemed to be going nowhere but his laser-guided strike flew down a narrow channel between a defender's leg, the keeper's hand and his near post to send the Roma fans wild.

Mourinho was sent off in flamboyant fashion in the dying seconds.

In Genoa, Fabio Quagliarella's double brought him to 100 goals for Sampdoria and gave them a 2-0 win against Empoli.

A real surprise in Turin last night as the derby between Juventus and Torino ebbed and flowed, both sides having periods of dominance before settling on a 1-1 draw.

Torino certainly started the brightest, testing Szcecesny twice in the opening 10 minutes but the opening goal came on 13 minutes. Juan Cuadrado's corner sailed to the far post where defender Matthijs de Ligt rose above a Torino defender and even his own teammate to squeeze his header between the post and Milinkovic-Savic for 1-0.

Josep Brekalo in the Torino midfield was having a busy game and his cross from the left on 62 minutes found captain Belotti in the box and although he was falling over, he guided his volley past the Juve keeper for a joyous equaliser. Belotti wheeled away with his trademark Rooster celebration in what could be his last derby for Torino.

Max Allegri made several subs, including switching out Vlahovic for Kean, but they could not break down the Torino defence and indeed, Torino came close to scoring again twice.

Tonight, Milan have an amazing opportunity to go 4 points clear at the top of Serie A when they thrash Salernitana away.
