  • Spitting Row! – Italian Football News 8 Feb
Ciao, ragazzi! This is Andrew with your Calcio Daily for Tuesday February 8th, our 166th daily show in a row!
Before we begin, remember that Calcio Daily is a value for value podcast – you donate what you think the show is worth and the best way to do that is via the Fountain podcast app on iPhone or android, or you can buy each episode as an NFT on OpenSea, just search for Calcio Daily.
We have seen footballers do horrible things to each other on the football field over the years, but the action that is always referred to the very worst thing you can do to another player is spitting.
Video emerged yesterday that shows Theo Hernandez calmly walking down the stairs to the tunnel after his red card in the very final seconds of Saturday's Milan derby. Lautaro Martinez then appears to run to the edge of the staircase, shouting down at his opponent and spit down at the Milan defender.
This causes Hernandez to run back up the stairs to argue with Martinez, who by this point is being restrained by colleagues and stewards.
What makes it funny, though, is that the final whistle goes while Martinez is being manhandled, his team having lost against their rivals.
In terms of punishment, the disciplinary committee sits today but they will only judge if it is mentioned in the referee's report. If not, a separate hearing will be heard over the incident.
Now that the transfer windows has closed, clubs are working to get deals signed for the players who are soon out of contract.
One of those is victorious AFCON-winning captain Kalidou Koulibaly of Napoli, who has reportedly been offered a 4 year deal worth 5 million euros a season. Juve are meeting again with the representatives of Paulo Dybala to further their renewal talks, but they are apparently not offering any more money, while Inter are preparing a new deal for defender Stefan de Vrij, although his deal does not expire until 2023.

  • Vlahovic Scores! – Italian Football News 7 Feb
In typical Vlahovic fashion, Juve's new signing scored on his debut.
Ciao, ragazzi! This is Andrew with your Calcio Daily for Monday February 7th, our 165th daily show in a row!
Before we begin, remember that Calcio Daily is a value for value podcast – you donate what you think the show is worth and the best way to do that is via the Fountain podcast app on iPhone or android, or you can buy each episode as an NFT on OpenSea, just search for Calcio Daily.
The weekend could not have gone better for Juventus.
Atalanta's shock defeat to lowly Cagliari gave them a chance to leapfrog them and get into the top 4 and, of course, new signing Dusan Vlahovic opened his Juventus account on his debut.
Just 13 minutes into his first game, he was put through by a deft lobbed pass from Dybala to lob Montipo and put Juve a goal up. Account opened.
Vlahovic played like he had been there for years, linking with the players who had most to fear from his arrival, such as Dybala and Morata. It was Morata who threaded a pass through for the other new boy Denis Zakaria to match Vlahovic and score.
Earlier in the day, Sampdoria thumped Sassuolo 4-0 , going 2-0 up inside 7 minutes. Caputo and Sensi the scorers, with Conti and Candreva adding further gloss later on.
Udinese beat Torino 2-0 and Bologna and Empoli fought out a goalless draw.
Napoli travelled to Venezia, who had fallen into the bottom three after Cagliari's victory. Napoli had chances but made hard work of the game but on the return to the starting lineup of Victor Osimhen, he made the difference with a towering header to put them 1-0 up on the hour.
The game racked up 100 minutes, most of the added time as a result of a collision between Venezia's Ebouhe and the ref, leaving the Venezia player needing stitches. No mercy shown to Ebouhe after 95 minutes, though, the ref consulting with VAR to give the striker a straight red after a horrible foul on Mertens. Bang on 100 minutes, Petagna rounded off a Napoli counter attack to finish the scoring.
Inter top the table on 53 points from 23 games, Napoli are a point behind them having played a game more, ahead of Milan on goal difference.
Juve are now in 4th on 45 points. Napoli play Inter at home at the weekend.
The final game this weekend is tonight, between Salernitana and Spezia.

  • Milan Win The Derby! – Italian Football News 6 Feb 22
A double from Olivier Giroud gives Milan bragging rights in the derby!
Ciao, ragazzi! This is Andrew with your Calcio Daily for Sunday February 6th, our 164th daily show in a row!
Before we begin, remember that Calcio Daily is a value for value podcast – you donate what you think the show is worth and the best way to do that is via the Fountain podcast app on iPhone or android, or you can buy each episode as an NFT on OpenSea, just search for Calcio Daily.
It's so good to have some football to talk about!
Serie A exploded into action yesterday with the Milan derby. My prediction was a clear win for Inter and when Ivan Perisic stabbed home for another Inter goal from a corner, it felt like that was the first of many. Inter were well on top in the first half, Milan limited to a role of trying to contain them.
Contain them they did, riding their luck on occasion but generally remaining very well organised, Pioli barking instructions continually from the side.
On 75 minutes, Milan had the overload in the Inter box. Tonali found Diaz, whose shot from the corner of the box was deflected to Giroud who slid in and poked it past Handanovic, who looked lost.
Three minutes later, absolute scenes as Giroud won it.
Canabria found him in the box, Giroud turned de Vrij and curled it past Handanovic. The Inter keeper had time to get a strong hand to it but made a horrible mess of the save.
The final act was a classic wipeout by Hernandez on Dumfries deep into stoppage time. The Frenchman not even waiting to see the card.
A stunning win for Milan, who are now just a point behind Inter, having played a game more.
Later, Fiorentina got the post-Vlahovic era off to a horrible start, losing 3-0 at home to Lazio. After a shared first half, Milinkovic-Savic opened the scoring when Zaccagni put him through to slot past Terracciano.
On 70, Immobile scored Lazio's second after a one-on one and when he was put through again on 81, he rounded the keeper to square for a teammate but Fiorentina's Biraghi couldn't avoid bundling the ball over his own goal line.
Earlier in the day, honours were shared between Roma and Genoa after a 0-0 draw but no honour for Roma captain Nicolo Zaniolo who let his side down, getting a straight red after arguing with the ref who had just disallowed a 93rd minute winner from him.
    Still to play this weekend:
    Atalanta v Cagliari
    Bologna v Empoli
    Sampdoria v Sassuolo
    Venezia v Napoli
    Udinese v Torino
    Juventus v Verona
    Salernitana v Spezia

  • It’s The Milan Derby! – Italian Football News 5 Feb 22
Ciao, ragazzi! This is Andrew with your Calcio Daily for Saturday February 5th, our 163rd daily show in a row!

We've already covered how Juventus won the January transfer window with the capture of Dusan Vlahovic and offloading of Aaron Ramsey but you have to remember that they currently sit in fifth place in Serie A.
For a long time, it was both Milan clubs, Inter and AC Milan, who were setting the pace. Milan dropped off ahead of the winter break, allowing Napoli to sneak in between them and their city rivals and today's Derby della Madonnina, or Milan Derby, give us a chance to see how much daylight exists between the two squads.
Milan boss Stefano Pioli was quiet during January, signing only Marko Lazetic, an 18 year old striker. This leaves them short of cover in defence, with Simon Kjaer out for the season. Inzaghi, on the other hand, was clear about who he wanted to bring in and seems to be lining up more business for the summer. He did bring in Felipe Caicedo and Robin Gosens, who completes his duo of flying wing backs.
Of his January business, Piolo yesterday said “I know my players’ qualities. They must feel strong,” he said. “We didn’t have a chance to sign a player who could improve the level of our team and we believe in our players.”
So what is he saying? Is he saying that they couldn't find any players capable of improving the squad or simply that they could not afford them?
Inter are the overwhelming favourites for today's game and only time will tell if Milan can keep up with them. But as always, both of them will have one eye on the black-and-white-striped horseman galloping up behind them in the shape of Juventus.

  • Lunch With José! – Italian Football News 4 Feb 22

It isn't often that we get a chance to meet our heroes. But for one Sicilian José Mourinho Superfan, that's exactly what happened. Marco, a Mourinho fan since watching his Porto team win the Champions League in 2004, drove all the way from his home in Palermo to camp outside the entrance to the Roman training ground every day for the week of his hero's 59th birthday.
On the last day of his campout, Marco was rewarded when an official from the club invited him to join the Roman squad for lunch – including the great man himself!
Despite being very grateful for the opportunity, Marco kept himself very calm, even as he broke bread with the Portuguese coach, who even acted as his guest's butler!
Marco said "I have been a fan of his for a long time and all I wanted to do was wish him happy birthday. I never dreamed in a million years that I would actually get to meet him. I would've been happy enough if he had just stopped to say hello but this really is something else. The thing that struck me most is how genuine he is and how well he treats everyone. Even me."
At the end of their encounter, Marco asked Mourinho to sign his T-shirt, which showed a slightly disturbing image of Jose riding his Roma scooter with Marco as his passenger!
Joy of all joys! Serie A is back this weekend and the standout game is tomorrow's Milan derby. All media coverage is about the absolute whooping that Inter are going to hand out, but in these matches, you just never know. Another prime topic has been the pitch at San Siro, which is in such a state that parts of it will be coloured green to make it look better on TV!
    Here are the weekend's fixtures:

  • New Faces For Europe – Italian Football News 3 Feb 22
Ciao, ragazzi! This is Andrew with your Calcio Daily for Thursday  February 3rd, our 161st daily show in a row!

Yesterday was UEFA’s deadline for clubs to submit their updated squad lists for the next phase of European club competitions and the new faces at Serie A clubs are all included.
Starting with Juventus, they have included new signings Dusan Vlahovic and Dennis Zakaria in their champions league squad, as well as  Luca Pellegrini, who is not a new signing but was not previously in the squad. Kaio Jorge misses out as UEFA allows no more than three changes.
The three new faces replace Kulusevski, Bentancur and Ramsey.
Inter new boys Robin Gosens and Felipe Caicedo are in their champions league squad, replacing Sensi and Kolarov.
In the Europa League, Lazio added signings Jovane Cabral and Dimitrije Kamenovic to their roster while Roma added Sergio Oliveira, Ainsley Maitland-Niles and Felix Afena-Gyan to their Europa Conference League squad.
Napoli face Barcelona in a playoff to stay in the Europa League in 2 weeks’ time.

  • Both Rome Bosses Unhappy! – Italian Football News 2 Feb 22
Both bosses in Rome are unhappy at the transfer activity at their clubs.
Ciao, ragazzi! This is Andrew with your Calcio Daily for Wednesday February 2nd, our 160th daily show in a row!

In yesterday's transfer window review, we didn't mention two of the bigger names in Serie A.

Jose Mourinho has spent the season is typical fashion, telling post-match press conferences that he simply has no players who are good enough, that he needs to completely rebuild his squad. But his January business involved just two loan signings – Ainsley Maitland-Niles from Arsenal and Sergio Oliveira coming in from Porto.

Jose will have expected much more, as well as hoping to get rid of some players he does not get on well with.

So, the remaining months of the season look like being very interesting for Roma, especially as there is a growing sense that captain Zaniolo is fidgeting for a move to Juve.

Across Rome, Lazio boss Maurizio Sarri is reportedly furious at how his club handled the transfer window.

Apparently Sarri does not have a say in which players go in or out at Lazio and Sarri is saying that if that does not change and he is not given a central role in the future transfer activity at the club, he will not sign a contract extension. While he was Napoli boss, Sarri said that he hated the transfer window, preferring to focus on coaching the players he has but it seems he is a couple of players short in his squad as the club allowed Vedal Muriqi to join Mallorca on deadline day.

  • Juve Win The Transfer Window! – Italian Football News 1 Feb 22
Juve won the transfer windows my miles and miles.
Ciao, ragazzi! This is Andrew with your Calcio Daily for Tuesday February 1st, our 159th daily show in a row!

The transfer window has now slammed shut and today we'll take a look at how the clubs in Italy fared.

Simply put, by far the winners of the transfer window were Juventus. They snagged the biggest signing in Europe this January, moved on a couple of players they had been struggling to find places for and somehow managed to move on perennial sicknote, Aaron Ramsey.

His transfer is a fascinating one. He turned down offers from several Premier League clubs and instead signed for Scottish champions Rangers on loan til the end of the season.

It smacks of imposter syndrome. That he does not believe he is good enough for the premier league and that to try and prove himself wrong would be too much work and doomed to failure.

Aside from Juve, Fiorentina had a decent January window with Piatek, Ikone and Cabral joining, while they at least have seen an end to the uncertainty about Vlahovic.

Milan fared far worse. With Kjaer out for the season, they needed reinforcements at the back but they just couldn't get anyone they wanted. Milan signed only one player.

For Napoli, one player in, one player out with Tuanzebe replacing Manolas.

Inter did their business quite early, Gosens arriving from Atalanta and Caicedo from Genoa. Christian Eriksen's contract expired and he is now spending 6 months in the Premier League with Brentford.

Spurs have swooped for two Juventus players on the last day of tegh transfer window.

On the last day of the transfer window, we expected a lot more activity from Antonio Conte at Spurs.
But yesterday, they bagged a fairly high profile transfer with the signing of winger Dejan Kulusevski from Juventus. Juve have been trying to move him on for some time and will be pleased that Spurs have taken the player to London.
They have also signed Rodrigo Betancur. Bothe players have completed part of their medicals in Italy and have now flown to London to complete the medicals and finalise the deals.
Kulusevski joins on an 18 month loan for 5 million euros with an obligation to buy. Betancur will cost an initial 19 million.
Elsewhere, Carlo Ancelotti is one of the most decorated managers in world football but UEFA have told him that he can no longer manage until he takes a coaching exam to renew his coaching qualifications.
He has won 21 trophies, including league titles in England, France and Italy as well as further silverware in Germany and Spain. But apparently he's not qualified to coach until he passes the exam.

  • Cowards! – Italian Football News 30 Jan 22
A group of Fiorentina fans have released an open letter about the sale of Dusan Vlahovic to Juventus and nobody comes out of it well.
Ciao, ragazzi! This is Andrew with your Calcio Daily for Sunday January 30th, our 157th daily show in a row!

There is a lot that football fans hate. Diving (from opposition players), players not pulling their weight, owners who won't spend billions or won't 'get out of their club', but one thing they really hate is when their club sells their best player to their most bitter rival.
On the receiving end of this more than any other group in history are Fiorentina fans, who over time have seen the likes of Roberto Baggio, Federico Chiesa and now Dusan Vlahovic sold to the Dark Side. The club whose name they dare not speak, Juventus.
In a very, very strongly worded open letter a group of Viola Ultras vented their fury at once again, selling the clubs jewels to their Devil.
“So it’s the usual, another small man without balls, without honour and without respect who goes to a club with no identity or sense of belonging,” read the ultras open letter.
“Another ownership that after expressing its love for the Viola people, does what all their predecessors did: sell our best players to our historic rivals. We’re no longer surprised by anything and certainly won’t tear our hair out at losing the latest buffoon.”
“Dear President, what did they tell you in order to convince you to do such a thing? You who at the Meyer hospital had told a child that you would not sell any more players to Juventus. Congratulate Barone, who must’ve been convincing to tell you who knows what to talk you into an operation that brought in money, but made you lose face in front of an entire city.
“How is it possible that you decided to do deals with the ultimate evil that until the other day you fought against? We thought, with pride, that we’d left behind the dark period of sales for profit and deals with they who shall not be named, only to go straight back into it.
“A city that had totally embraced your battles and would’ve continued to embrace you in future, but now feels abandoned and betrayed.”
“We are not prepared to watch our passion be trampled on, as your transfer market people don’t seem to represent your way of approaching this adventure with us. We anxiously await your arrival, President, as the entire city needs to understand.
“Our final message is for the squad. You’ve proved that you have guts, we are with you. More battles await us and hopefully we’ll prompt some regrets for those who left in the night like a coward.”
Nobody involved in the deal comes out well, and the fallout will continue for a long, long time.
