"You love your enemy by making a new world that is a good world....even for your enemy."

In Called to be Bad Ep. 5, pastor, author, and "peacemaker" Melissa Florer-Bixler and I talk about what loving your enemy actually means. Our conversation centers around her book, "How to Have and Enemy: Righteous Anger and the Work of Peace." We dig into various touchpoints from her book, such as: anger, abolitionist work, white supremacy, and more.

"I am playing with the edges here...the edges of language, and the edges of how we can learn to fully express what we need to express..."

Episode 4 of the Called to be Bad Podcast

In this episode I discuss the relationship between Christianity and cussing/swearing/'bad" words (whatever you would like to call them) with guest Allan Rudy-Froese. Allan teaches preaching, biblical storytelling, and performance theory. He is working on a book about swearing and faith.

Can you be a "good" Christian and still swear like a sailor? What are the origins of cuss words? What is the line between expressing yourself and offensive language?

“I said to her, and I say to all of you, if somebody asks that you stop talking, talk even more.”

On this episode of Called to be Bad I am joined by Cyneatha Millsaps. Cyneatha is a pastor in Elkhart, Indiana, a community activist, and the executive direction of Mennonite Women USA. Cyneatha and I talk about the relationship between faith and wealth. How do churches use all the money they have? Why don’t Christians talk about money more—especially since Jesus talked about it all the time!

"Nothing opens a mind faster than laughter."
In this episode of Called to be Bad, I talk with Ted Swartz--writer, actor, and comedy extraordinaire (my words not his) about the relationship between theology and comedy. Is faith funny? How are humor and the holy connected? Let's find out.

References:

Book: "The Hidden Tools of Comedy" by Steve Kaplan
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/16056974-the-hidden-tools-of-comedy?from_search=true&from_srp=true&qid=1mLkBPuNfp&rank=1

Ted's Famous Green Smoothie Recipe:

Banana: 1
Orange: 1
Water: Up to a line in the Vitamix. (I don't know the amount, just up to a line. It's not an official line of measurement, it is a line)
Grapes:  a bunch. Not sure of the official measurement, just a bunch.
Frozen Strawberries: Handful. Again, see Grapes for an explanation of the amount.
NOTE: A handful is slightly different than a bunch.
Raw Almonds: A little less than a handful. If I was pressured to say the exact amount, I would go with 14.
Spinach: Lots of Spinach, tons, bunches, handfuls.
Process: Add water and grapes, plus first round of spinach--stuff the vitamix full, blend briefly to chop of spinach. Fill the vitamix again with spinach, repeat the blending. Add the rest of the fruit.
This makes about 2 quarts.  I drink one and freeze the other.
