"The framing of sexual desire as a moral failing is one of the biggest disservices that the church has ever done to people." 

In this episode of the Called to be Bad Podcast I talk with Karly Poyner-Smith (she/her) and Mylie Brennan (she/her). Karly is a Ph.D. student and graduate instructer at the University of Memphis. Her research focuses on the intersections of gender, religion, and agency--examining evangelicalism, purity rhetoric, and contemporary purity culture. Mylie is a PhD researcher at Queen's University Belfast--amongst other topics, her research includes the lived experience of women in Northern Ireland and the rhetoric of Christian dating books for young women. 

Karly says she approaches the topic of purity culture more from a research standpoint, while Mylie says she can provide story and experience based commentary. 

In this episode we explore the vast, weird world of purity culture--what it is, what messaging we learned about it growing up in the church, and the many different ways it has impacted our faith and sexuality.

In part one of this episode of Called to be Bad I talk to tiktok sensation and fellow podcaster Joey Trieb about how he has deconstructed from the evangelical view of Hell he was taught for most of his life. Now, as an “exvangelical” he is re-learning a more biblical view of Hell that aligns with his view of God as reconciling and loving. 

We start by talking about different views of Hell, then we go into the specific words in the Bible that are translated as “Hell”. We also talk about how we get some aspects of our concept of Hell from the Bible (sometimes inaccurately) but how we get most of our concept of Hell and Satan from extrabiblical sources.
