In this episode of Called to be Bad, scholar Jessie Knippel takes us through the history of colonial witch trials, why certain people groups were targeted as “witches", and the role Christianity played in these hunts. Then we move to the modern day and how cycles of religious, political, and economic control continue to police women and other marginalized peoples.
*Also I apologize for the mis-matched and bad audio--I couldn't figure out how to fix it.*

"I feel like black women have been, and always will be, the closest approximation of Jesus Christ's salvific work, in our lives."
Shantell Hinton Hill is an engineer, pastor, and poet that centers her justice work around Black Feminism(s) and Womanism. She tells stories of finding her voice and the way black women in her life have uplifted, empowered, and resurrected her. Now it is her goal to live out this empowering work and way of life. Shantell connects this work with the women of the Bible who were unnamed, voiceless, yet acted in faith and power. She describes how Black feminism(s) and Womanism point out the way intersectional oppressions may be operating throughout scripture. We hear one of her breathtaking poems from her book, “Black girl magic and other elixirs,” which problematizes how Christians think of suffering, death, and crucifixion. We finish by hearing about the voices who have shaped Shantell’s Black feminism(s), her faith, and her writing, as well as encouragement for those who don’t know what to do with their faith in the face of all the suffering in our world.
Guest’s Full Bio:
Shantell Hinton Hill is the ultimate Renaissance woman. An engineer turned pastor, Shantell situates her work at the intersections of social justice, public theology, and Black feminism/womanism. A native of Conway, Arkansas, Shantell is married to Rev. Jeremy Hill. They recently welcomed their first child, Sophie June, to their growing family. Shantell obtained a Master of Divinity from Vanderbilt Divinity School. She also earned a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Colorado State University. She is a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and the National Society of Black Engineers. She is also an ordained minister in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). “In a sense, partisan politics, uncompromising politics are seen as, ‘Well that’s the real problem,’ and I think that moderate politics often does take a side, I just don’t think it has the courage to say it.”
In this episode of Called to be Bad–Jonny Rashid, pastor, and author of the book, “Jesus Takes A Side: Embracing the Political Demands of the Gospel,” shares his experience of living as an Arab-American during political upheaval in the United States, and his realization that politics are always personal. We discuss the dangers of moderate politics and how polarization may not be as “bad” as people often think they are. Jonny also breaks down aspects of the devastation ripping apart Gaza right now–and how you can hold two true things together at the same time.

“Transitioning gave me back my body, which is what I expected, right, I expected to have this new relationship with my body and that will be great. What I didn’t also expect, was that transitioning gave me back my faith.”
In this episode of CTBB I talk with ordained priest, playwright/screenwriter, and theologian Shannon TL Kearns about body theology through a trans lens. Shannon is a transgender man who believes in the transformative power of stories. We begin by hearing Shannon’s story of how he discovered his queerness and transness, and how that impacted his relationship with his body and faith. We touch on body dysmorphia and the complicated relationship everyone has with their bodies then Shannon provides examples of biblical characters who are defying gender norms. We end with Shannon’s advice for trans folx and their friends/families.

"In 2020, with all the civil unrest, we reached a tipping point of there being more guns than people."
In this episode of Called to be Bad I talk all things guns with Mennonite pastor, adrenaline junkie, and "aspiring pacifist" Matthew Yoder. We discuss how the stories we tell ourselves about power, privilege, and politics all affect gun sales. This is a lengthy episode that is only part one of a two-part series. In part two, we dive deeper into the gun problem in America. How can we bridge the liberal/conservative divide in order to save lives?

For the preparedness-minded among us, this video lists minimum essential equipment that everyone living in a society with a gun problem like ours should carry with them at all times, and excellent instruction on how to use it. I carry most of these items on my person all day every day (in my man-purse). CW: contains brief descriptions of physical trauma.

"Part of the gun problem in America--the proliferation of guns--has as much to do with policy making approches by Democratic officials as it does pro-gun Republicans..."
In part two of this two-part series on guns, I talk with Matt Yoder further about gun ownership and the spiritual issues behind the gun problem in America. We talk about "protecting" vs. "connecting" and SO MUCH MORE. Enjoy this long, chatty,
