General George Marshall presented the following formula for handling people: “1) Listen to the other person. 2) Listen to the other person’s full story. 3) Listen to the other person’s full story first.” The General’s formula makes good sense, but we live in a world full of talkers and good listeners are very hard to find. In today’s text Paul is going to encourage us as Christians to be good listeners, “to lead a quiet life, minding our own business, […]

George Harrison had a song way back when entitled All Things Must Pass. Since I’ve been saved, I don’t get any of my theology from the Beatles anymore, but there is truth in the theme of that song. All the many trials of this world must pass. As we will see in today’s text, the Bible teaches that our trials “come to pass,” not to stay. And they have a grand purpose–to test and strengthen our faith in Jesus Christ. […]

There has never been a truer statement than the old saying, “Joy is the byproduct of obedience.” That’s one of the main lessons in 1 Thessalonians, chapter two. Paul had been obedient to the Lord’s calling, and he had gone to Thessalonica and started a church there and many got saved. And so Paul called the converts there “his crown of rejoicing–his crown of joy.” God has called all of us, as we go through life on this earth, to […]

A few years back a team of Ukrainian astronomers discovered a 1350’ wide asteroid that is on track to hit the earth in 2032. If it were to strike us, the massive asteroid, 2013TV135, would pack quite a punch equivalent to 2500 megatons of TNT, and it would make such a deep impact on earth that it could destroy an entire nation. Personally, I don’t believe the Lord is going to allow any asteroid to devastate the earth in […]

O.S. Marden once wrote, “There is no medicine like hope, no incentive so great, and no tonic so powerful as expectation of something better tomorrow!” But for a realistic expectation of a better tomorrow, one must have a hope that is real. The church at Thessalonica was facing extreme persecution from both the Jews and the Romans, and so Paul wrote 1 and 2 Thessalonians in order to give them a real expectation of a better tomorrow based upon the […]

If you go online you can find all sorts of “prepper” sites. What’s a “prepper?” He’s someone who’s preparing for doomsday. And on these websites (and many of them are Christian based) you can buy survival kits that will supposedly help you get through the end times. Well, I don’t know about you, but I don’t plan on going through the tribulation, so I don’t need the kind of survival kit these people are selling. But living in these very […]
