He tells them to not think that He's there to abolish the Law and the Prophets, but to fulfill them. We explored what fulfilling them looks like and then addressed the important question of the relationship of Christians with the Old Testament.

Over the centuries there have been three categories of interpretation of this section, all true, and and all complementary. By making the identity statements, Jesus is giving His disciples "the talk."

What's interesting there, is how John fills in the blanks between the temptation and the arrest of John the Baptist which Matthew tells us is the beginning point of Jesus ministry. Here we review all of that, and look at how Jesus is still doing things, inviting people to follow Him, and teaching, preaching and healing.

We left off in verse 5, of Matthew 4, the second of the three temptations of Christ by the devil. It's very instructive for us, as we look at the way Heaven's Champion, and the undefeated enemy of man collided here in the desert. The devil doesn't play fair, he's a crafty and sly opponent. Jesus however was victorious and He has showed us the way. Because He was tempted like we are, no one will have compassion on us quite like He will. This was a powerful study for many of us.

- In Matthew 4, Jesus is led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. Satan has been undefeated in the history of man, and Jesus will emerge victorious. In these three temptations we see all of Satan's plays, and how Jesus was able to resist. For us, this is an opportunity to study the moves and the plays and learn how we too can be victorious in the struggle with Satan.
