When we began the study about Micah in chapter 17, we looked at his attempt to reach God by false religion. He tried by creating his own system to reach God, which included making idols and hiring his own priest. Both of which were forbidden by God. Today we will see the culmination of this false attempt to please God by his own efforts with the stealing of his gods, and even his priest! But something to take note of in this passage, not only his sincerity in his false religion, but also the sincerity of the Danites who stole his gods and his priest. Both were very sincere in what they were doing and in what they believed in. Yet both were very wrong and deceived. As we look deeper into this passage we will discover that just because someone is sincere does not mean they are right.

Whenever we see an individual or a nation in decline spiritually we will always see the same results and consequences. Compromise, Corruption, and confusion. First there will be compromise. The person or nation will abandon previously held convictions and simply give in to what everyone else is doing. Then secondly from compromise comes corruption. Once we abandon our moral convictions, corruption simply takes over. After corruption, comes overall confusion. No one can ascertain right and wrong anymore and hence “anything goes” and everyone does what is right in his own eyes, rather than what is right is God’s eyes. This is exactly what we will see in today’s passage with the nation of Israel and sadly what we now see in our own nation. Compromise, corruption, and confusion between right and wrong.

Last week we came to the official end of the judges of Israel with Samson, yet we still have 5 chapters left in the book. The remaining chapters of Judges are simply events that took place earlier throughout the time of the Judges. That means the rest of the book of Judges is not in Chronological order, but simply reveals events that happened during this time period. Today we begin looking at a story of a family who desperately wanted to include God in their lives, but simply didn’t know how. So they completely went about it the wrong way.

All of us go through storms in life at one time or another, and it’s often in the height of the storm where we feel the most alone. As we will see in today's teaching, when we belong to Jesus we are never alone, no matter how we feel.
