We celebrate our national independence and the blessing of freedom every July 4th. As Americans, we also recognize there is a downside to freedom. Even as freedom creates the opportunity to do right, it also creates the opportunity to do wrong. This is what we will see today with the children of Israel.

Peter didn't want his original readers to finish his letter thinking that their ultimate enemy was any Caesar or empire that ruled the world. He wanted them to understand who their true enemy was and ultimately how they might resist his attacks. It's the same truth that the Holy Spirit wants us as believers to understand today.

There are many who come seeking Jesus with wrong motives. As we see in today's passage, Jesus will meet you where you are, and begin to change those motives into a right motive to complete the work of God.
