Paul's heart was that the church would not be ignorant when it comes to the proper operation of spiritual gifts. Whether through total avoidance, or misuse of the gifts of the Spirit, Paul seeks to bring a proper understanding of this vital reality of the Christian life.

Some things in the church are worth fighting for and some things are not. We call the essentials and nonessentials. Nonessentials are things that won’t determine if we go to heaven or not. Essentials are those things that do. That is why they are worth fighting for. And if we know it’s worth fighting for there is no reason to delay.
