In King Solomon's prayer of dedication for the Temple, he asked that God would daily supply His people with whatever they would need as His servants. As they would surely face spiritual challenges beyond their natural abilities, he called on God to meet those needs. As they would face times of drought and war, he called on God to meet those needs. And even as they lived their day-to-day lives, he was asking God to supply what they might lack there as well. In todays study, Pastor Mark asks the question “Do you find that you need daily maintenance in the Lord?” Isn't it good to know that God renews His mercies toward us every morning?

The ancient followers of God knew how to pray, and there's much we can learn from them. This meant that they knew the nature of God and what kind of requests He would honor. Knowing His promises enabled them to pray with great confidence and boldness, knowing that they were not asking for things that were questionable. After all, God Himself had made the promises, so why not request that God fulfill them? Knowing what God has pledged to us both physically and spiritually is a solid foundation for our prayers.

Israel enjoyed a time of great prosperity and blessing under King Solomon. His wisdom and humility before God ensured the blessings of God on the nation. As Pastor Mark emphasizes in today's study, when a nation recognizes God and bows to Him as the source of their peace and abundance, that nation will continue to receive His grace. We sometimes think of the “God of the old testament” as angry and stingy towards everyone, but we see in these passages His joyful benevolence on those whom He's called to be His own. It is His desire that we should receive His blessing and not His judgement, and so He calls us to obedience.
