Judy Coode is the project coordinator for the Catholic Nonviolence Initiative (CNI) and a staff member of Pax Christi International. She  organized two conferences at the Vatican on Just Peace and Nonviolence (in 2016 and 2019), the first of which was likely a major impetus for Pope Francis writing his World Peace Day message in 2017: "Nonviolence: A Style of Politics for Peace." She joins us to tell us about the goals and outcomes of those two conferences, to answer a few critics, and to talk about where the Initiative will go from here.

Today (October 11, 2019) is the twenty-first anniversary of the canonization of Edith Stein (Saint Theresa Benedicta of the Cross). Fr. McCarthy tells us about his connection with this fascinating woman, how he came to name one of his daughters after her, and how a prayer tree to Edith Stein resulted in the miraculous healing of his daughter in 1987. In the first twenty minutes, we talk about the lack of interest, on the part of the American Catholic media, in reporting on the full background of the miracle. In the hour that follows, we discuss Edith Stein and the details of the miracle.

Terrence Malick's new film, "A Hidden Life," debuted at the Cannes Film Festival in May (2019). The movie is about Franz Jaggerstatter, an Austrian farmer and a Catholic who refused to serve in Hitler's army and, as a result, was executed on Aug. 9, 1943. May 30th is the feast day of Saint Joan of Arc, an uneducated peasant girl from France who lived during the Hundred Years war. At the age of 13, she began hearing voices that told her what she must do to save France. Five years later, she dressed as a boy, rode across the countryside, and led an expeditionary force into battle. She was eventually tried for heresy and burned at the stake. Fr. McCarthy talks to us about the problems she presents (or should present) for Christians and how we can determine what is worthy of imitation in the lives of the saints.
