On the Other Side of Fear Is the Solution | Liam Sullivan on Addiction, Chelsea & Finding Purpose
What happens when the thing that once helped you escape becomes part of the path that leads you home?
In this deeply open conversation, Kelly Saward is joined by filmmaker Liam Sullivan to talk about grief, addiction, alcoholism, sobriety, football, filmmaking, mental health, identity and the experiences that have shaped the man and creative he is today.
Liam lost his dad suddenly at just 14. In the years that followed, Chelsea and football became an escape, an identity and a place to put some of what he was feeling. His love of football would eventually intertwine with another passion: filmmaking.
From creating Chelsea compilations as a teenager to building a career behind the camera, working alongside some of the biggest names in football and helping grow John Terry’s YouTube channel, Liam’s story is one of persistence, creativity and finding purpose in the things that make us feel most alive.
But behind the career is another story.
Liam speaks candidly about his battles with alcoholism and addiction, the importance of talking when life feels impossible, his journey into sobriety and recovery, and why asking for help can be the beginning of everything changing.
As Liam says:
“On the other side of fear is always a solution.”
Kelly and Liam explore what happens when we stop hiding what we feel and begin to ask some much bigger questions:
Who am I beyond my work?
Who am I beyond what has happened to me?
Where do I belong?
What does recovery really look like?
And what becomes possible when we use our experiences not only to change our own lives, but to help somebody else?
They also talk about spirituality, a higher power, 12-step recovery, meditation, imposter syndrome, community, World Yoga Festival, the extraordinary energy of football, creativity, storytelling and Liam’s belief that the most powerful films don't simply give us information, they make us feel something.
A warm, moving and ultimately hopeful conversation about grief, addiction, recovery, sobriety, Chelsea FC, filmmaking, mental health, purpose, identity, creativity, spirituality, connection and having the courage to speak.
Because sometimes the conversation we are most afraid to have is the one that changes everything.

Can you hear me?
Kelly's passion is creating the kind of space where people feel safe enough to drop the mask, speak honestly and share what really matters. She wants to hear you, and shares here what's been heard so far. We all have a story, we all have something of value to share, we just need a safe space, the right ears, and a deep trust in what is felt. I'm beginning to understand the rest speaks for itself.
I invite you to listen in, get in touch, and if you'd like … be curious to live the question!
