In this Field Note episode of the Canyon Pathways Podcast, I (Noel Bouché) explore the word “DISCOVERY”—not as a grand uncovering of something new to the world, but as a sacred uncovering of what’s long been lost or buried in our own hearts.

As boys, discovery was a way of life. From childhood curiosity to young adult ambition, we chased the thrill of newness. But somewhere in midlife—amid spreadsheets, strained relationships, and the weight of leadership—discovery starts to feel... distant. We get covered up. Our days are covered. Our calendars are full. Our joy gets buried beneath survival.

But the truth is: what’s buried isn’t gone. And the Father is inviting us back into the joyful work of discovering—of uncovering—the parts of us that have gone dormant.

We look at the Latin root of “discovery,” which literally means to “remove the cover.” The things we’ve forgotten—dreams, gifts, relationships, even moments of joy—are not gone; they are simply hidden. And our Father, the Good Father, is not only with us on the dig—He equips us for it. He knows there are dry bones in our hearts and hidden treasures in our stories.

This episode is an invitation to remember: there’s more to discover. And not out there somewhere—but right here, in the canyons of our own hearts.

There’s something about the word mission that stirs us—especially in midlife. It speaks to meaning, movement, and the hope that our lives still matter. And yet, for many of us, that word also carries weight. In the quiet corners of our hearts, we’re asking: What am I here for? Have I missed it? Is there still more ahead?

In this Field Note, I reflect on the nature of mission—not as something we manufacture, but as something we receive. Our mission doesn’t begin with a job description or a checklist. It begins with identity. With sonship. With the Father.

You may feel stuck. You may feel tired. You may even feel forgotten. But what if this season isn’t a pause—it’s preparation? What if the very place you want to escape is the place you’re being formed?
