Welcome to the Capacity Conversations Podcast. This is what I like to call a “sister-friend” community, which is the safe space to talk openly and honestly about the challenges we face while managing the competing priorities between our personal and professional lives. Many of us are either in corporate, an entrepreneur of a combination of the two, on top of being moms, wives, caregivers, big sister’s or just the go-to person in our circles of friends and families. Having all that responsibility can leave you overwhelmed and depleted if you don’t take inventory of where you’re at on a regular basis.
In this episode, I sit down with Nakisha Hicks. She is the visionary founder of ElevateHer, LLC, , which is dedicated to empowering organizations and leaders, especially mid to senior-level Black women in HR. With nearly two decades of strategic HR experience, Nakisha provides consulting services for nonprofits and organizations serving vulnerable populations, executive coaching, and professional development programs.
She is a dynamic speaker on topics such as imposter syndrome, emotional intelligence, and overcoming self-doubt, offering valuable strategies to enhance confidence and leadership. Nakisha’s impactful approach has increased retention, improved compliance, and fostered inclusive workplaces. She’s been featured in multiple publications such as SHRM, Lattice, and EBONY magazine, and has been a speaker at events including our very own Inaugural Capacity Conference, Transform and NAAAHRs national conference. Nakisha’s influence is widely recognized as transformative within the HR landscape.
We talk about what it looks and feels like to have a personal board of directors, and why it’s essential for your capacity. Kisha mentioned that your board is made up of people you pay, those who are your mentors, and of course your family friends. Here’s how she broke it down:
The People You Pay: Doctors, therapists, coaches, financial planners, massage therapist, etc. These are the folks you invest into make sure you’re healthy in every since of the word, across every pillar of capacity. The People You Seek: Mentors and people who genuinely want to see you win in life, both personally and professionally. This includes your friends, family, God-given people you’ve prayed for, etc.Personal Board of Directors
