Car RayRob is kicking off the month of September with a brand-new episode of SAY HELLO TO MY LITTLE FILM! It's Rob's pick and he's bringing another one of his personal favorites, the 1970 drama FIVE EASY PIECES! This true American classic stars a Jack Nicholson (CHINATOWN, THE SHINING) in the iconic role of Bobby Dupea, an oil worker with a privileged past that he must confront when he learns his father has suffered multiple strokes and his days are numbered. Accompanied on his journey by his eccentric girlfriend Rayette (played by the powerhouse of 70s cinema Karen Black), Bobby searches for who he is and what he truly wants from life. Born from one of the great New Hollywood production companies, BBS Productions, FIVE EASY PIECES is the great American film that embodies the changing landscape of counterculture America and the evolving face of the Hollywood industry.

Starring Damon Wayons (THE LAST BOY SCOUT, IN LIVING COLOR), David Allen Grier (IN LIVING COLOR, MARTIN) and Robin Givens (BOOMERANG, HEAD OF STATE), BLANKMAN centers on a hyperintelligent, socially inept repairman who takes up a superhero mantle to protect his neighborhood after his grandmother is brutally murdered. Ray and Rob have fond memories of this cult classic but will the rewatch prove their nostalgia true? Tune in this week to find out!

For Ray's September SAY HELLO TO MY LITTLE FILM selection, he has decided to do a sequel, not of a film he's already shown but of a conversation he and Rob began last month with THE LORD OF THE FLIES. To fulfill this, he has chosen the 2015 drama THE STANFORD PRISON EXPERIMENT. This tale of a real-life experiment conducted on the Standford University campus in 1971 centers on a group of students who agree to participate by being divided into prisoners and guards to see how each side would react. As with LORD OF THE FLIES, the darker sides of humanity bubble to the surface as the effects of power lead to torment for the unfortunate students relegated to be prisoners. Featuring stellar performances by Billy Crudup (WATCHMAN, BIG FISH, ALMOST FAMOUS), Tye Sharidan (MUD, READY PLAYER ONE), Ezra Miller (WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT KEVIN, THE FLASH) and many others, THE STANFORD PRISON EXPERIMENT is a chilling study of people and the abuse of power that possibly lays dormant within us all.

It's fair to say that for Ray and Rob, the 1990s were the golden age of Disney animation. The run of hits holds a special nostalgic place in both of their hearts. At the top of that mountain sits ALADDIN, the story the young street urchin who with the help of magical genie, wins the heart of the princess Jasmine and defeats the evil Jafar. Over the last decade, Disney has seen fit to once again repackage these classics in live action versions in an attempt to bank on that nostalgia and line their pockets in the process. Because of this phenomenon, Ray and Rob decided to look at the original ALADDIN and it's 2019 counterpart to decide, is this really just a cash grab? Or is there more than meets the eye?

Rob is kicking off August's SAY HELLO TO MY LITTLE FILM by recommending a film to Ray that holds a special place in his heart, the 1991 Coen Brothers classic BARTON FINK! Starring John Turturro (THE BIG LEBOWSKI, O' BROTHER WHERE ART THOU?) and John Goodman (RAISING ARIZONA, THE BIG LEBOWSKI), BARTON FINK centers on a rising star playwright of the same name as he takes a job in 1940s Hollywood to pen a wrestling picture for a mid-level studio. After relocating to a crumbling hotel with distracting neighbors and peeling wallpaper, Barton finds himself with a debilitating case of writer's block. As he tries desperately to overcome it, he encounters a cadre of zany characters that only seem to add to his predicament. BARTON FINK comes from the early period of the Coen's filmography (pre iconic films like FARGO and THE BIG LEBOWSKI), it is an often overlooked classic written by writers who either love writers or hates them! (You decide!) 

Will the early style of Coen's not ring as true with Ray as their later more well known films? Or will Barton's journey of creative discovery lure Ray into it's hypnotic allure? Tune in this week to find out!

Ray and Rob are currently on a bit of a cold streak here on HELLO MOVIES, MY OLD FRIEND, so they're hoping to break the trend by revisiting a long-lost classic from their collective childhoods, the 1987 heist comedy BURGLAR! This Whoopi Goldberg (THE COLOR PURPLE, GHOST) led comedy centers on Bernie Rhodenbarr, an ex-con burglar who is being blackmailed by dirty cop Ray Kirschman to continue her life of crime to his benefit. When her latest heist turns sideways and her mark ends up dead, she finds herself in the crosshairs of the police and at the center of a conspiracy that could lead Bernie to a grave of her own. With supporting performances by Bobcat Goldthwait (POLICE ACADEMY, WORLD'S GREATEST DAD), John Goodman (BARTON FINK, RAISING ARIZONA) and Lesley Ann Warren (CLUE, LIFE STINKS), BURGLAR finds Whoopi on the upswing of her career that would solidify her as one of the comedy's greats!

On this week's episode of SAY HELLO TO MY LITTLE FILM, Ray takes Rob back to high school by recommending the 1990s screen adaptation LORD OF THE FLIES! This film based on the 1954 book by Sir William Golding stars a young Balthazar Getty as Ralph, the natural leader of a band of military students who find themselves stranded on a remote island after a savage plane crash. With no hope in sight, the group take to setting up their society which quickly becomes treacherous as factions break off and tensions begin to rise. With supporting performances by Chris Furrh (EXILE, A FAMILY FOR JOE), Danuel Pipoly (THE TORKELSONS, THE GIANT OF THUNDER MOUNTAIN and a debut performance by JAMES BADGE DALE (THE DEPARTED, IRON MAN 3), this slice of classic literature dissects how long society can stand when all rules seem to fade away.

It's time again for a brand-new episode of A COPY OF A COPY! This week, Ray and Rob are examining what they're calling the "stealth remake" in which a movie is an obvious remake of an older movie but is not explicitly marketed as such. For this version of the remake, they're watching one of Rob's favorite film, CASABLANCA starring the acting giants Humphrey Bogart (HIGH SIERRA, IN A LONELY PLACE) and Ingrid Bergman (NOTORIOUS, FOR WHOM THE BELL TOLLS) and the cult dystopian action film, BARB WIRE. This Pamela Anderson (BAYWATCH, THE LAST SHOWGIRL) vehicle was a critical and box office failure but has found an audience in the proceeding decades. 

Did the makers of Barb Wire hide the fact it's a remake to avoid the comparison to one of Hollywood's greatest triumphs? Or was it to allow BARB WIRE the chance to soar on its own merits? Tune as Ray and Rob dissect these two films look at this variation on the remake!

It's time to say Happy Birthday to Rob here on SAY HELLO TO MY LITTLE FILM! To celebrate, he's taking part in his new annual tradition to commemorate the day of his birth, messing with Ray! Rob has chosen a very special film this month, not in the hopes of Ray hating it, but to push him to the boundaries of his film milieu. He has picked the David Cronenberg's 1983 body horror classic VIDEODROME! 

In this subversive classic, James Woods plays Max Renn, the president of CIVIC-TV, a Canadian UHF television station known for pushing the boundaries of taste and civility. When Max is exposed to a new underground pirate broadcast centered on realistic torture and murder scenes with no discernable plot, he becomes enamored with who creates it, where it's made and how he can get his hands on it. As Max goes deeper and deeper down the Videodrome rabbit hole, he begins to notice changes in his perception that forces him to question his own reality and puts him on a collision course with a force beyond his understanding. 

With stellar supporting performances by Debbie Harry (HAIRSPRAY, FOREVER, LULU) and Peter Dvorsky (THE DEAD ZONE, TWINS), Videodrome shows David Cronenberg at the height of prescience of world we may have unknowingly found ourselves living in.  

Will the unbounded creativity of one of the masters of body horror prove too much for Ray? Or will the underlying warning force Ray to listen and not look away? Tune in this week to find out!

It's another 5th Monday here at Car RayRob which means its once again time for a special kid's episode of SAY HELLO TO MY LITTLE FILM! Ray and Rob are once again welcoming their favorite guest and ambassador of the younger generation, Mr. Kitty Kaiju! For this episode, Rob has decided to shake things up by not only recommending a movie that Mr. Kitty Kaiju hasn't seen, but he's also chosen one that Ray hasn't seen either, the 1984 sci-fi classic THE LAST STARFIGHTER! This staple of 80s childhoods everywhere centers on Alex Rogan, your typical teenager who dreams of escaping his humdrum life with his girlfriend, Maggie. But when his plan falls apart and a brand-new arcade game enters his life, he finds himself not only leaving his trailer park, but the planet itself to fight in an intergalactic battle against Xur and the Ko-Dan armada! With cutting edge for its time CGI animation, THE LAST STARFIGHTER is a classic entry into the cannon of sci-fi cinema and delivers on the dreams of kid everywhere!
