So if a woman is able to get to a higher leadership position in a company, then she must be very capable and she must have overcome a lot of difficulties to get there. Then she is probably seen as a stronger leader than the men that have also reached that goal with perceivably fewer barriers or fewer difficulties.

Both bias and double standards have a negative effect because they make things unfair. Whether it's selection for a promotion, choosing a teammate in gym class or being evaluated for a presentation, bias and double standards are likely influencing the outcome.

It's more common to notice the negative forms of bias and double standards. Women and other minorities are familiar with these.

However, I was intrigued to learn this past week that there are some situations in the workplace that lend women an advantage and positive bias compared to men.

The first things to break down is -- what forms a leadership identity? Or a followership identity for that matter. The first thing is going to be individual internalization. That means your self belief, your self concept. Do you see yourself as a leader or capable of leading? Or, do you see yourself as a follower or uninterested in leading?

Are you a leader or a follower? A lot of it has to do with how you see yourself and the actions you take that reinforce that idenity as either a leader or a follower. Being a follower is more of a default option--it's what happens if you aren't intentional about being a leader. We don't need to strategize how to be a follower.

But it's important that we dissect which behaviors and actions form these different identities. That way we can check ourselves, and maybe even each other, so that we keep on keeping on in our leadership development.
