The Piper Davis League was founded in Birmingham, AL, in 1992 by Fred L. Plump, Jr. The league, formed to honor Negro League baseball players, was specifically named in honor of Lorenzo “Piper” Davis, a local resident of Birmingham. Prior to Piper’s passing, he shared his personal experiences with the Negro League as a Black Baron and as Black Baron Manager. The league was formed initially with three local parks—Brighton, Hueytown, and West End—with twelve teams the first year. The second year, the league expanded to twenty-four teams and the third year to thirty-six teams. At the end of the 2010 season, the league grew to sixty-four teams. In 2013, the league expanded to thirteen states, the District of Columbia, and the Bahamas. More recently, we have added the territory of Puerto Rico

Piper Davis League is a 501(c) 3 nonprofit organization that is molding young urban student athletes into future leaders in society. Our mission is to provide opportunities to develop character, sportsmanship, self-esteem, and discipline; foster leadership; provide educational support and life skill training; and furnish a blueprint for success through sports training for the youth by creating a safe and nurturing environment through the areas of sports and academia. By the time this article is published the People’s National Party (PNP) might have decided to participate in the national debates leading up to the general election. Even if they do at the last minute, their stubborn refusal to participate and the spurious reasons given for not doing so are regrettable and an insult to the democratic principles enshrined in the party’s founding. Norman Manley and even Michael must be spinning in their graves at what the party has become. Under no circumstance would either man have refused a debate. They would have welcomed the opportunity to take on their opponents; for they knew they would have proved themselves a worthy match to any. But these are different times when the party is governed by feckless leadership and when the party has degenerated into a mere election-winning machine, devoid of any deep philosophical construct of the kind that made it a respectable political party in Jamaica and the Caribbean. This present refusal to participate is made the more regrettable by the whimsical and outright disingenuous reasons that are being offered. In one instance we are told that the refusal is based on contemptuous remarks made by the Leader of the Opposition Andrew Holness about Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller.

Understanding words, behavior, and concepts

Your newborn can't yet speak your language or fully understand what you're saying to him, but he's a fast learner. Research shows that babies start listening to their parents' voices while still in the womb. Once born, your baby begins tuning in to your words and sentence patterns to figure out what you're saying. He also uses his powers of observation to learn about some of the more complicated things – like love, trust, time, and cause and effect – that exist in his physical and emotional world.   When it develops  Your baby starts to learn what others are saying and doing even before she's born. As a newborn, she doesn't know the precise meaning of the words you use, but she picks up on your emotions – such as happiness, sadness, love, concern, anxiety, and anger. By the time she's 7 months old, she'll respond to her own name, and by 8 to 12 months she'll understand simple directives such as "No" or "Don't touch." Around 24 months, she'll be able to talk to you in two- or three-word phrases. About the age of 3, she'll have a vocabulary of a couple hundred words and a pretty good sense of some of the rituals and activities of everyday life, such as food shopping, housecleaning, and knowing night means bedtime.
