Frequently we at Big Cat Rescue post on our website individual stories about victories in the war against exploitation and abuse of big cats. There are reports of a local, state or federal law that passed, or reports of how supporters e-mailing a company or a venue caused the venue to stop allowing cub petting on their property or to stop using big cats in an advertisement for their products. In this article I’d like to take a moment to stand back and look at what is happening from the “30,000 foot” level, because what is happening is very exciting, and it is easy to get lost in the weeds of the individual victories and not think about the bigger picture.

Encouraging Volunteers to Create School Programming for Oculus

Just one addition to Howard's notes:

 

The Oculus Go headsets in the Call of the Wild room are capable of storing a couple hours of content each and you do not need access to a computer or WIFI to play back the content once it has been loaded onto the headset.  These currently cost $250.00 each, but we can get $199.00 versions that hold about half that, or an hour of content we choose.

 

We currently have 3 main pieces of content.

 

• One is a display of 20 of our 1-5 min videos where the user can choose what they want to see with the controller.

• One is a display of a few of the same videos where it starts with the first video and rolls through all of them in sequence.  The user can't change what plays.

• One is a work in progress where the user can choose their own adventure.  As they walk around the sanctuary they can click on signs (pictures of the cats) and play that cat's story before being returned back to the tour path.

 

Due to storage limits on the Oculus Go you have to know which one of the above you want to present and set it up via a computer and WIFI and make sure all of the videos are downloaded to the headsets so that once you get to your destination, you won't need WIFI or a computer.

 

The headsets come with a warning that they are not intended for children under the age of 13.  I don't know why there is such a caveat but guess it could have to do with kids getting all caught up in an experience and running into walls or falling off stairs or balconies.

I also would like to create an extension of the virtual reality presentation in the form of a project-based learning lesson that could be used in classrooms to make sure this is seem by the kids as something serious and not just entertainment! The whole point of my original proposal was for kids to have a meaningful experience with an in-depth project so they would remember it share it, and help take action. I wonder if we could have a 4th grade teacher immersion day to help them understand the virtual reality experience and understand how to implement the project. Of course it would have to be limited as we cannot have too many people on the property at once.

 

With this said, I would not be able to go out to schools as I have so much I am doing in retirement. I do not want to turn this into another school job! Lisa is working as a substitute at schools and may look for a permanent position. We could brainstorm what we might do with this new tool. It’s just like Mickey Mouse!

 

 

I was riding my bike down the tour path when I intersected two tours.  One woman squealed, “Hi Carole!!! It’s just like seeing Mickey Mouse!”  She must have caught the confused look on my face and clarified loudly, “You know, seeing you in person is like seeing Mickey Mouse when you go to Disney world?!”  Well, that was a first.

 

So many exciting things are going on at the sanctuary to be grateful for.  The team over at Pixvana has been very helpful in getting our 360 video experiences into Oculus headsets.  Lauren Buckingham is doing a fantastic job with her 360 video production and just had over 130,000 views of PurrFection Ocelot which rivals some of our best flat video content.

 

Brittany Mira has taken a huge load off me by taking over Amazon and there isn’t a day that I’m not thankful that she’s capable of dealing with all of those issues; like listing high jackers, lost inventory, reporting, sourcing, etc.  Deb Quimby has done an equally impressive job of handling much of the product issues at CatRescue.biz but I still have to deal with customers who just will not check their measurements against the size charts.  Another case of coffee arrived from Deb today. 

 

The Alexa apps are expensive (over $11,000 so far) but I think they will have longevity and reach a new audience for us.  Sayed is working on the Big Cat Rescue Game skill right now and it’s going to be awesome as a tool to get people to do good things for cats and earn points by doing so. 

 

Jamie and Victor are improving the real estate properties and are working on getting the Gift Shop done before the Walkabout Nov 3.  They tore out the old memorial wall by Tiger Lake and replaced it with a respectable looking barricade.   Our barricades have always been the ugliest part of our experience here, so I’m glad they are doing something to improve the look and functionality.  

 

VeeR TV and Binge TV have been promoting our videos, so that’s gotten more eyeballs on the issues.  We just got a  $15,000 check for a two week period at Facebook and that number goes up every two weeks in leaps and bounds.  I’ve been spending more on advertising at Facebook as that has become such a great source of income.

Joe Schreibvogel is just one of several exotic cat exploiters who has threatened my life.

The Florida Wildlife Commission's stated mission is to Protect and Serve, but in my experience they only protect their right to kill animals and preserve that right at all costs.  Most of the physical attacks on me have happened while trying to speak up for animals at FWC meetings.  In the past they have typically turned a blind eye to it.  I’m hopeful that considering the actions of the USFWS and FBI on the Schreibvogel case, that it will become safer for those advocating to protect animals at these meetings.

 

One case, in particular that leaps to mind is where I was walking down a long hall to a set of double doors where the FWC was holding a stakeholder meeting.  That is usually a crowd of hunters and fishermen lobbying for more ways to kill animals and me and two or three other women who would attend to oppose the land grabs and free for all hunting regs.  There would always be a lot of intimidation at those meetings, but this time was worse.

 

Coming down the hall behind me this time was Vernon Yates.  He was a trapper that FWC could call on to pick up any kind of nuisance animal or for any seizure of illegally kept exotics.  We were told Vernon Yates would then sell those animals back into the pet trade or feed them to his growing collection in his backyard, but we could never prove it.  His yard was less than 2 acres and borders a grade school playground.  He had something like 75 big cats, bears, and other exotics there at the time.

 

I was there to ask for a ban on the private possession of exotic cats.  Vernon Yates was there to make sure no ban took place.  He is a violent man and has physically attacked me twice. I was gathering up all my courage to go through those double doors, knowing I would be greeted by a room full of hostility.  I didn't hear him come up behind me and lunge for me, until just as I opened the doors.

Virtual Cats

Our vision is a world where all wild cats live free.  If you read the recent article by Howard Baskin it details the amazing strides we are seeing toward that end.  Most notably circuses are ending their wild animal shows all around the world and are banned in many other countries.  Mainstream travel agencies and tourism industries are banning the practice of pimping out cubs for pay to play schemes.  There are so many fashion designers who now oppose the use of fur that you can barely name them all.  Third world countries are closing their zoos because people are realizing that it is cruel to collect or breed wild animals for life in cages.  The gains for protecting big cats are growing exponentially and I take great relief in seeing the light shining so brightly at the end of the tunnel...

 

With one major exception.  U.S. zoos.  Our federal bill to ban the cruel act of ripping days old cubs from their mothers, just to pimp them out as pay to play props, has stalled in Congress because of zoos and those affiliated with them.  Even the big accredited zoos want huge loopholes in the bill because they use cub petting to lure donors.  They all hide behind the excuse of education for conservation because to call it what it is would get them no support.

 

I was at a dinner party recently with people who I’ve know for more than a decade.  I thought they understood our mission.  When one of them said she wanted to take her grand children to the zoo the look on my face must have been obvious because she followed quickly by saying, “I know it’s probably not right, but how else am I going to teach my grandkids to appreciate animals?”  Now I was completely dumbstruck.  Howie did a good job of answering with all of the ways that we have at our disposal now, like great documentaries, camera trap photos and scientific insights made by people working in the field who study wild animals.  I just sat there speechless.

 

I was reeling in the admission, that even though people who go to zoos usually come away feeling like there was something very wrong with wild animals being held captive for their amusement, they still do it because they don’t believe their is a viable way to engage their children and teach them about nature.  I thought about the way I’ve seen inner city children on our tours, who were just as amazed at the ducks, and birds and squirrels who flock to our patch of Eden as they were the cats.  

 

When people come to Big Cat Rescue they are immersed in the beauty of nature but we can only handle about 30,000 visitors a year.  How can we provide that total immersion into the life of exotic cats in such a way that it can be made available for free everywhere?  We have made efforts to create a 360 degree experience since 2015 but the tech has only recently caught up to our vision.  Thanks to recent break throughs in the devices, like Oculus Go, that are now cheap enough for wide adoption by consumers, and platforms like Pixvana, VeeR TV, YouTube and Facebook we are able to immerse millions of people in experiences just like our keepers have.

 

Until you strap on a head mounted display and watch one of our 50+ videos of our cats up close and purr-sonal, you really can’t explain what it feels like to be right next to them,  It’s better than seeing them in person because you are closer.  You are acting out the part of their caregiver.  You are totally engaged in their world and perspective.  We are gamifying this experience so that you can choose your own path through the sanctuary and visit the cats you choose when you choose.  Instead of taking your kids to a zoo, to see the big cats trying to pretend you aren’t there, you can give your children the chance to really get to know the lions, tigers, leopards, cougars, bobcats and other wild cats at the sanctuary.

 

I believe that adopting this tech and demanding more such virtual experiences is how zoos will legitimize themselves again.  As they stop the breedin

Where are Kimba, Max and Simba Tigers?

 

Governments move slowly but we are pressing as hard as we can to get the circus tigers out of Guatemala and to their forever homes in the United States.  Our friends at ADI were able to negotiate the release of 9 tigers and 2 lions from a circus in Guatemala after the government had outlawed circuses that exploit wild animals the year before.  We helped make that possible by sending the funds necessary to build a temporary camp at Antiqua Exotic.  We have also been paying for the care of the tigers who will be coming to Big Cat Rescue and trying to get other sanctuaries to do the same.

 

On Sept 18 ADI was able to secure Health Certificates on Kimba, Max and Simba and have them translated into English so they can travel to the U.S.  Two days later the USFWS issued our request to bring them from Guatemala straight to the Tampa International Airport, instead of the usual Miami airport, which would require our people to be on the road for two days and the tigers to be subjected to unnecessary stress of travel via trucks for five more hours.  It may not sound like much to accomplish, but as Jan Creamer of ADI put it, “It would have been easier to pull our own teeth.”

 

Meanwhile, Howard has been doing his part to keep the import permit process moving forward by pointing out that the tigers are in temporary quarters which are not ideal and the greater urgency is that the government of Guatemala wants to rescue other tigers still in the illegal circuses but has no place to put them. The lives of those tigers are at risk because the circuses have no motivation to spend money on medical care or even food.  Our government agency says to check back in three weeks to see how it’s going, but from what we can tell, it’s likely to be the end of the year before Kimba, Max and Simba are on their way here.

 

ADI plans to take all of the lions to a new sanctuary they are building in S. Africa and they are frustrated that some of the circus cats were sent to a Guatemalan zoo where one has already died.  We were all very disappointed back in June when one circus held back 6 tigers, but now they are ready to give them up.  The problem is where to put them during this ridiculously long process of exporting them to sanctuaries outside of Guatemala.  The Guatemala government’s animal welfare division UBA and the wildlife department CONAP are prosecuting all circuses who have refused to hand over their big cats.

 

This is great, but we don’t want the government to halt prosecution for lack of a place to put the cats.  We would like to speed up the transfer of the cats at the temporary camp to S. Africa and the U.S. to free up cage space at Antigua Exotic, but as you can see, there isn’t much we can do other than keep the pressure on.

 

Meanwhile, we are part of the Big Cat Coalition which includes all of the big cat sanctuaries that are accredited or verified by the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries and some that are working on that goal.  Between us we have the cage space in the U.S. for all of the Guatemala circus cats.  All of the sanctuaries feel they can raise the funds to get the cats from a U.S. airport to their facilities, but only one other, non accredited sanctuary, has actually sent money to Guatemala to build the temporary camp and provide food and medical care to the 11 lions and tigers currently waiting there.

 

We are encouraging other sanctuaries to reach out to their donors to fund operations on the ground.  We are helping them navigate the complex export / import process, even though we have limited experience.  We are doing that so that when governments do the right thing and ban cruel displays they are not left holding the bag.  The tigers who could go to the camp right now, if there were cage space and monthly allowances for their care are Itsa, Bimba, Sombra, Lupe and two cubs.  The faster we can get them away from the circuses, the sooner we can stop the breeding that re

Working with Pixvana to Host 360 Videos

Wow!!! You did a LOT of work putting this together and that is much appreciated.

 

The main scene would have:

 

1. 12 Species ports (as you noted w/ 65 cats)

2. 2 Hospital ports - (The Windsong Memorial Hospital for surgeries and the Recovery Hospital for things like baby bobcats who are in for the earliest part of their journey back to the wild) - I have more surgery videos than anything because it's been easy to set a camera in the middle of the action and capture interesting things going on all the way around.

3. Bobcat Rehab - This would be scenes of their rehab after surgery or as they grow big enough to go out to our 4000 sq foot runs and then the releases back to the wild.  We release 4-6 bobcats a year, so I'll always have new content for this.

4. The Trading Post Gift Shop - I'm working on a Google Earth type experience in there

5. Rainbow bridge - Cats live longer here than anywhere else, but 20 of our cats are over the age of 20 which is twice the typical lifespan, so I wanted to have a separate scene to move cats videos after they are gone, if the video was particularly good, or compelling in its narrative.  Because the old cats need a lot of intensive care, such as stick feeding and blood 'cicles to get extra fluids in them, I get better video of them than the ones who just want to trash the camera.

6. Kitten Cabana - Sanctuaries don't breed cats for life in cages, and they don't allow contact with big cats because that makes people want to pet them; which is what drives all of the breeding for cub play opportunities.  Our 100 volunteers and interns LOVE cats though, so we foster domestic cat kittens for the Humane Society of Tampa Bay.  Our volunteers socialize these kittens to make them more adoptable, and we get a lot of cute footage of that.  Everyone loves kittens and sometimes there are as many as 30 running wild in the Kitten Cabana.

 

I realize that the storage capacity of Oculus Go will keep me from being able to host all of what I want, but I think that will increase, and we can add as we go.

 

I just downloaded all of my current clips in the Tiger Lake Spin and that took up half of my 64 GB space.  I'd really like the one called PSA - BCR to be as high quality as possible, if you can increase the resolution on that one.

Tomorrow I'll be attending the PixVana pop up in NYC to check out their new editing tools.  I've started using their cloud based stitching for the GoPro Omni but it doesn't stitch GoPro Fusion yet.  The tools they are demonstrating will be using the Rift or VIVE to edit inside a headset so that proportions and distances are easier to master.

 

I reached out to Within and applied to be considered as a content provider because I really like the quality of what they share.  I noticed that we are showing up frequently in Oculus' promoted videos in the Go.  I also reached out to Magnopus who did Coco and CNN's amazing apps and told them we want to put the puss in Magnopus(s).  I'll let you know if any of them respond.

 

I’m not sure what is happening, but we are getting hundreds of people a day to sign up on Facebook Messenger with us, where it’s usually been about a dozen a day.

It makes me sad to give up

It’s something I almost never do.

 

The following was from Howie, to ___ Esq., about whether we should focus on a bill that only deals with the trafficking issue.  I had felt so confident that we could pass the Big Cat Public Safety Act, but I agree with Howie’s conclusions.  We talked about it in the Jacuzzi last night.  

 

I’m putting more hope into the movies we are working on to end the demand and hope that Joe will try to use his knowledge of all of the evil doings of his network to try and buy his freedom from law enforcement.  

 

“...After spending massive amounts of time on the bill over the 6 years and something in the range of $750k when I add it up, having achieved enough votes to pass it, and finding that we cannot, despite all our efforts, get it out of Committee, I am starting to feel, although not finally concluded, that we cannot get a meaningful bill through a Republican Congress and have to seriously rethink what we do if they retain control, which I think is a better than 50% probability...”

My mother changed her Facebook name and Joe Exotic has to stay in prison pending trial.

That makes for a pretty good day in my book.  The Wardwell property foreclosure was today and Gale went by to tell the tenant to get out by this weekend, so that’s good news too.   VeeR TV featured my Nikita Lion Licks Camera video that’s been going viral.  Just one of those placements on Fox was considered to be worth $12,000 because of the visibility it gave us.
