It seemed Jeff was trying to position himself as the hero in his deposition, so take this with a grain of salt. Timing is a little fuzzy, but last November, when the USFWS said I was in imminent danger, Jeff said it was because Joe Schriebvogel fronted $3,000 to a man, Jeff Lowe had brought from S.C. to Wynnewood to cut grass. The man took the money, came to FL to do surveillance and told Joe he’d rather do it with a knife than the gun Joe was offering him. Government officials had an undercover person in Joe’s organization, who Joe was negotiating the hit with, and there was a squad of FBI agents listening in and ready to swoop in and arrest Joe as soon as he offered the cash to their guy, but he never did. A few days later, when Joe propositioned the man, they weren’t in place to catch him. It’s unclear if they were able to record it. Jeff Lowe called and texted with Matt from USFWS a few times during the 8 hour deposition, and referred to him as “buddy” Hi, I’m Carole Baskin and I’ve been writing my story since I was able to write, but when the media goes to share it, they only choose the parts that fit their idea of what will generate views. CatCon 2018 & Amazon Conference
CatCon 2018 drew a record 16,400 attendees, flocking from 45 states and 11 countries to the 2-day annual convention in Pasadena, CA to meet and greet with an expanded and influential feline and human talent roster including Chris Poole, (our former videographer who went on to start his own feline phenomenon with Cole & Marmalade) who shared a booth with us.

CatCon is the biggest experience in the world dedicated to cats and pop culture. The annual event, which informs, educates, and entertains thousands of feline fans with the latest in groundbreaking and innovative products and ideas for cats and their people, attracts top talent from the worlds of television, film, and entertainment.  We went there to make sure that cat lovers know they can protect big cats too by making a call to Congress asking them to pass the Big Cat Public Safety Act.

Callers quadrupled our impact on Congress each day of the event and there was a lift in calls in the days that followed.  We gave away 600 virtual reality viewers so that people can experience our 360 videos in a headset.  There is just no comparison to using a headset to see our 360 video and we want people to be able to have that “Wow!” experience.  It’s the first step to showing how a virtual visit with a wild cat is so much more engaging than seeing one languishing in a cage.

We are continuing to pursue ways that we can get members of Congress and their aids to see the plight of big cats in a headset because it is a distraction free way of bringing the viewer into the cat’s world in a personal way they’ve never experienced before.  We are also looking for ways to bring this technology into schools, hospitals and nursing homes.  If we can show zoos that they can continue to operate, using their facilities and fan base, without harming wild animals, we can make the world a kinder place.

After Cat Con I hopped a plane to Seattle, WA because Amazon had asked me to speak on a panel about how we use social networking.  My panel consisted of Brian Boland, a VP from Facebook & Instagram, Zach Peacock, the Social Creative Strategist from Amazon, & Cubby and Amy from Charity Water.  I was totally surprised, the following day, when Piers-Heaton Armstrong, the VP of Amazon Affiliate Marketing, got up to speak and began talking about how Big Cat Rescue was “punching above its weight” by earning huge revenues in the Smile program with only a small staff and limited resources.  The only other charity that he mentioned was Charity Water.  It made me so proud to know our fans care enough to use Smile.Amazon.com when they shop.

There were several break out sessions and I kept hearing from other charities that their supporters just didn’t understand how Smile works.  While they would sign up, they couldn’t remember to go to Smile.Amazon.com so none of their shopping was counting.  It really made me glad that Howie created such good instructions for our members.  In case you need them go to: https://bigcatrescue.org/amazon-smile/

Right now the Smile program has raised about 89,000 of the 89 million that Amazon has donated to all charities.  We love the partnership with Amazon and appreciate that they have welcomed Big Cat Rescue into their first 120 charities that are allowed to raise money on Alexa devices.  All you have to do is say, “Alexa, make a donation to Big Cat Rescue” and she will guide you through the rest.

On that note, you can do more with us on your Echo devices.  Just say, “Alexa, open big cat” and you will hear what we are sharing to educate people about the cruelty of cub petting.  In your Alexa app, search for Big Cat Briefing and when you add it, you can get a 1 minute summary of the news of the day at the sanctuary in your daily briefing by just asking, “Alexa, what’s the news?”

$50,000 is the price on my head

I guess I should be honored that it wasn’t just a six pack and baggie full of blow.

Matt, the USFWS guy talks way too much and told Howie that Jeff Lowe had offered up a witness who said Joe Schreibvogle offered him $50,000 to kill me.  Matt said the guy refused to testify when he found out that USFWS was leading the charge.  That tells me he’s some exotic owner / dealer or he wouldn’t care.

In 2016 we had Joe against the wall and Howie went to an all day and nearly all night mediation where Joe agreed to stop breeding exotic cats and we would give him a long time to pay us back at a rate he could afford.  In the days that followed, Jeff Lowe jumped in and convinced Joe he’d pay all the legal fees if Joe would make him a partner in the zoo.  The deal fell apart and I’m surprised it took two years for those two men to come to hate each other.  I think they are both such liars that it is impossible to know what caused the split, but what we do know is:

Joe was running the zoo in April 2018 when he claimed to have thrown Jeff out.  Jeff had gone to Las Vegas to start up a casino hopping bus, called the Safari Bus, where he’d pick up people on the strip, take them to his rented house, and charge them to fondle cubs.  We turned him in.  PeTA turned him in and I didn’t hear anything more about it until I found out that Jeff had been in jail for not having permits to do that and his cubs had been seized because they were in such poor health.  Next thing you know, Jeff has gone back and thrown Joe out of the zoo.

Jeff said Joe was stealing from him and they finally got caught by Wal-Mart for feeding the expired meats to customers at their zooTiki Bar.  Losing their free meat source, I knew things were going to go south pretty quickly.  Lots of cat places depend on that free meat, despite the fact that it is of questionable quality and isn’t a balanced diet for big cats.  Most of them wouldn’t exist at all, if not for the throw away food, so it’s long bothered me that it enables the worst of the worst, who don’t care if their adult cats die young, because all they need are cubs to pimp out.

Jeff’s judge in NV let him out on a one year probation, that requires him to stay out of trouble.  I don’t think he can’t stay out of trouble for a year.  In fact, he just had a final judgment handed down in another matter where he allegedly stole a food truck from a man who was renting it to them to set up their drive in movie next door...on property they didn’t own.  You can’t make this stuff up.

The judge in our lawsuit against the zoo ordered us to pay 30k and Jeff to pay 80-90k to the receiver.  We paid our part.  Jeff & Joe didn’t pay theirs, so the receiver and our attorney went to the zoo to try and reinstall the cameras over the registers again, and set up systems to monitor the cash, but Jeff wouldn’t let them in.  The receiver has filed for a contempt  judgment.

Meanwhile Jeff and Joe continue to throw each other under the bus.  Joe is in hiding and Jeff claims that he’s gotten calls from the taxidermist saying the 6 tigers Joe shot for their pelts are ready for pick up and he owes them over $5k.  The jeweler also reportedly called saying the gold plated tiger teeth are ready too.  Jeff claims to know, and says he’s told authorities, that Joe shot and killed all of the tigers he couldn’t sell or use for breeding any more.  In 2016 Joe had over 200 tigers and other lions, ligers, etc. but NatGeo reporters, Sharon Guynup & Steve Winter went there last week and said there are only 68 big cats and almost no other animals.

According to Matt, between Jeff and Joe ratting each other’s bad deeds out, they have pretty good evidence against “doc” Antle and others, so this could be a huge bust by the time it’s done.  He tells Howie that he has enough on Joe to indict him for murder for hire, violations of the endangered species act, bankruptcy fraud and more.  His plan is to pick him up o

    Guardian Angels or Dumb Luck?
I woke up early and laid in bed seeing this incident from 20 years ago in such vivid detail, I felt compelled to come here and recount the story.

We had built two large cages on the north lake bank.  They were chain link and probably about 7 or 8 feet high.  The cages went down into the lake so the cats could swim and the fences extended out there.  The wooden orange crates were just falling apart from termites and carpenter ants, so we decided to use a couple of the concrete Us to make dens.  They were too big to fit between the rails, so Don said he’s use the crane to lift them over the fence and set them in place.  Made sense to me.

What didn’t make sense to me was why he insisted that I go inside the cage to show Kenny exactly where to set it.  It didn’t require that level of danger to myself to show Kenny that I wanted it set in the open, away from the fence, so the cat couldn’t use it as a launch pad to get out.  I showed Kenny and he understood.  Don flew into a rage, so I went in the cage and feeling kind of silly, pointed the ground in front of me and told Kenny, drop it here.

Don was talking to Kenny, and was clearly agitated, but I couldn’t hear what was being said over the roar of the crane’s diesel engine.  I’d done my part.  Showed where to drop it, and started to leave.  Don just had a hissy fit; saying I had to stay right where I was.  He angrily took Kenny’s place on the crane to set the piece himself.  Although it didn’t make any sense that he’d need a person to mark the spot, since the spot didn’t really matter much, he kept yelling at me to stand right there.

It’s usually better to just go along with his craziness than buck it, so I complied, until he swung the beam of the crane in my direction so quickly that it was obvious I was about to be batted off the ground by 7500 lbs of a flying concrete slab.  As I froze briefly, and then began to run, the dangling concrete Us bashed into the fence and slowed its trajectory to where I stood.

I got out of the way in time and Don was just livid.  He said he was mad at the crane, the fence, Kenny, the servals, me; everyone or thing he could blame.  Years later, I wonder if he was angry he missed  killing me.  No telling what was going on in that delusional mind of his.

I often tune in to the Kitten Cabana LIVE webcam and I love listening to the water fall that is now a feature of that concrete U.  I wonder how Don would feel if he knew I derive such pleasure from something that now seems to have been meant to meant to be my demise?

Euclidean wrote me today about their new hologram gaming tables and experience rooms.
    I replied:

Our primary interest in this technology is to be an early adopter and content provider with the ultimate goal of ending the barbaric practice of keeping wild animals in cages under the guise of conservation.  We want zoos to become a relic of the past, but to use their infrastructure and audience to promote your kind of experiences.

We have 70 exotic cats at our sanctuary and are constantly filming them in 4k, 5k and 360 video and are willing to let companies, like yours, use our footage for free in order to further your offerings.  We have not filmed w/ 3D cameras, but are willing to add that to the mix, if we can be helpful in promoting VR technology.

Of course, we'd love to offer your experience at our on site Gift Shop but we only have about 30,000 visitors per year so that probably will not warrant the cost of set up in these early phases.

    Today is Jamie’s 38th Birthday
I don’t know what the occasion was, but I found this dated 3/23/1999 on WildLife on Easy Street letterhead:

Jamie Veronica Murdock was born 7/16/80 in Tampa, Fl.  She is 18 years old and graduated two years early, and as valedictorian of  her school.   She is an accomplished wildlife photographer as evidences by the photos in the enclosed brochure.  Two years ago, when she graduated she had the world in her hands and could have gone anywhere and done anything.  Her mother, Carole Lewis, had founded WildLife on Easy Street, Inc. a big cat sanctuary home to over 200 animals in 1992 with her husband, Don Lewis.  August 18, 1997 Don Lewis disappeared, leaving Carole Lewis as a single parent with a real estate business to run and a refuge that cost the couple as much as $235,000.00 per year to keep open.

Jamie Veronica had the option of traveling, going to college or pursuing her own photography career, but chose to stay home and help her mother in the day to day operation of WildLife on Easy Street, Inc.  Jamie Veronica is now the President of WildLife on Easy Street, Inc., editor of Cat Tales, it’s quarterly newsletter and is in charge of the office, phones, adoptions, memberships and co-ordinating events.  She is a member of the volunteer committee which oversees over 100 wildlife volunteers.  She is also in charge of raising all of the cubs and assists with the vaccinations, worming, feeding and medical attention of all of the animals living on Easy Street.  She is the person on the brochure in the center photo, with her black leopard, Jumanji.  She has successfully raised the only two White Servals in the world and has won many contests with her photography.  She has taken on a huge endeavor and is the embodiment of a caring human being.       - Carole Lewis

I found this letter date June 18, 1997

    Hillsborough County Arts Council c/o Art Keeble  725 E. Kennedy Boulevard #401  Tampa, Florida  33602  (813) 276-8250

Dear Mr. Keeble;  I thought the idea of showcasing local artists in the County Center was a wonderful idea.  As I was waiting in the County Commissioner’s lobby I found it refreshing to be able to spend that otherwise wasted time in getting know more about the talent in the area.  My husband, and my daughter help me care for a 40 acre wildlife sanctuary in Citrus Park that is home to over 200 orphaned, abandoned and abused animals, most of which are great cats.  My daughter, Jamie Veronica has made a hobby of photographing these magnificent creatures and is now hoping to make a career of  her love of photography.  She is only sixteen years old and just graduated two years ahead of her time, as Valedictorian (she’s being featured on Fox 28), and she now works full time at WildLife on Easy Street, Inc., doing everything from the newsletter to rescues.

She took all of the photos in the attached colour brochure, except for the photo of herself, center back cover.  She works in slides, prints and digital images and even does some of her own colour developing.  She draws and paints and completed several murals for the walls of her school.  She has won in two photo contests (she only entered two) and was published in the Photography Forum’s annual last year.

She has trained several animals, including Bobcats and has an eye for the essence that is the “cat”.  She has saved and wisely invested her allowances and earnings since she was ten years old and has managed to put away over $8000.00.  She was born at the Women’s Hospital here in Tampa, Florida on July 16, 1980 and has always resided in Tampa.  She has never had any formal training in any art field, but as you can see is a “natural”.  Of course I am proud, but all of Tampa Bay can take pride in this exceptional person through your organization.   For the Animals,  Carole Lewis

Monday will be Jamie’s 38th Birthday

I thought this photo of her celebrating yesterday with her friends at her favorite bar (Six Ten Brewing) said more than words could describe.  L-R Karma Hurworth, Carolyn Thompson, Gale Ingham, Kathryn Stapleton, Matt Rusczyk, (assuming his wife Jen is taking the photo), Afton Tasler, Mark Mira, Brittany Mira, Jamie Veronica and Victor Alonso.  They have been going to Six Ten Brewing since it opened, so this was a typical snapshot into her life.

I’m sad that Justin Boorstein is missing from this photo and her life.  She never has said why they split.  He was the beer nerd and the reason she developed a taste for craft beers.

It’s been a good week.  The new judge in Oklahoma ruled on the motions that had been pending since September of last year and ruled in our favor that the Greater Wynnewood Zoo is the same Garold Wayne Zoo and thus subject to show cause for violating the court’s order to not transfer assets.  It ruled that the Receiver was owed 100k and that we were responsible for paying 30k of that.  The judge said WE didn’t give the zoo proper notice, but that wasn’t our fault.  The previous judge ordered it unexpectedly because she was trying to recuse herself from the case, after Jeff Lowe hired her husband to defend him in it.  My belief is that they know neither Jeff nor Joe is going to pay the receiver and rather than have an officer of the court suffer, they are stiffing us with the 30k so he didn’t lose money.

He was an awful receiver.  He was scared to death of gun toting Joe and wouldn’t stay on property to protect the cash flow.  Instead he installed a camera over the cash register and relied on Joe to dutifully do all cash transactions under the camera.  How ineffective was that?

Joe posted on Facebook yesterday to tell people to stop looking for him because they never cared about him anyway.  I think it’s a ploy to get sympathy, or he’s fearful of being found.  He’s got to know that Jeff has spilled his guts to the FWS officer and probably other branches of law enforcement.

I went to a new eye doctor yesterday.  Dr. Nogales of Tampa Eye Clinic.  That’s where I had RK surgery to restore my vision in 1991.  My reading eyesight has been declining and it had gotten to the point where I could not read my phone and reading my computer was becoming difficult.  My right eye stayed the same at -2.50 but they increased the strength for my left eye from -2.75 to -3.25.  My eyes were dilated the rest of the day, so I don’t know how it’s going yet.

Alvarez re roofed the house yesterday but a flash storm leaked through their half finished work and soaked the ceilings inside all but two rooms of this old 1979 shack that I’m living in.  I had noticed water stains in one spot under the solar panels and hadn’t re roofed in the 15 years that Howie had been here, so I scheduled the project, even though I would rather have waited until our dry winter.  I doubt there would have been this much damage if I’d waited (or if Alvarez had been prepared with tarps for rain, since it has been raining every day).

The Big Cat Sanctuary Alliance has asked me to speak at their upcoming conference on Hospital Design.  I’m working on a 20 minute video to run in the background of our hospital footage.  It will be something new for a presentation that I’ve never seen anyone do.  I’d love to get the timing down to where I talk to a certain point and then the audio comes up for a bit, then back to talking, so that it breaks up the monotony of talking about how to design and outfit a hospital.

Howie and I have been learning Spanish with Rosetta Stone.  At night we both need some time to wind down and often watch TV in separate rooms.  This is something we can do together.  Howie just went up to let Hurley out because Jamie is in Ft. DeSoto for her birthday weekend.

Joe burned the records, gave away the cats and is on the run
Howie learned last night that Joe Screibvogel and John Reinke tossed the offices at the GW Zoo and after secreting away several boxes at Joe’s mother’s house, he burned the rest so that Jeff Lowe couldn’t have it.  He reportedly gave away ALL of his lions, tigers, ligers, primates and every other animal at the zoo, rather than let Jeff Lowe profit from them.  And now he’s on the run.

The USFWS says they were able to get the telephone recording they had been trying to capture for months that will put Joe away for “murder for hire” in their words.  They said they hope to be able to arrest and indict him within a week, if they can find him.  They are going to S.C. and some other places to interrogate witnesses to the murder (mine) for hire scheme.  I don’t know how planning a murder gets someone jailed; especially given Joe’s propensity to lie and say he’s just doing all the evil things he does for “entertainment” value.

Word on the street is that Jeff Lowe is $89,000 in arrears to his attorneys, and we have a trial set for mid August so some of this may resolve by then.  Jeff’s attorneys want out so we may go through another delay when he appeals to the court to give him time to find new council.  Oklahoma has to be running out of stupid attorneys who don’t bother to find out the last dozen before them were stiffed.

Joe has been using Beth Corley’s USDA license to transfer all of these cats out to other places, and as I suspected, she had no idea he still had her license.  USDA is to blame for most of this because they know they haven’t seen her in a decade and they just auto renew every year as long as the paperwork comes in with the fee which had to be coming from Joe and the zoo’s account.  Despite that and the hundreds of citations and complaints pending against him, they just keep letting him breed, exploit, kill, maim and trade in endangered species because they don’t want to admit there is a problem.

Joe blames me for losing everything, so if he does kill me, I hope my family sues USDA for failing to do their job.  If they actually regulated the bad guys, I wouldn’t have to risk my life to raise awareness about the misdeeds of these criminals that cause so much suffering.

Jeff Lowe is fishing around to see if we will pay 600k to make him go away, but he won’t give up his breeding license.  Rumor has it that Joe Schreibvogel has been evicted from the zoo by Jeff, so he’s in no position to bargain.  We are still applying pressure on his mother for the fraudulent transfer of the zoo out of the bankruptcy court’s grasp (and ours).  Howie is about ready to go for this, and I am not resisting.  There are better ways we could spend 250k a year than chasing those two.

Joe came in dead last in his bid for Oklahoma governor and he’s been saying he plans to move to Belize and tend bar.  Funny, since he claims to be so intolerant of drinkers.  Maybe he figures it would be a good cover for drug dealing.  At any rate, I think he’s figured out that making money pimping out tiger cubs isn’t so much fun now that people are starting to question it.

I spent yesterday immersed in mixed reality videos about creators who are trying to bring this into the mainstream.  I’d love to be investing in that and signed up with Magic Leap as a creator so that I could pitch them the idea of all the 360 footage of big cats they can use for free, if they will make replacing zoos a priority project.  They said the thought never crossed their minds before but they are intrigued.

Old House of Many Rooms Dream

I’ve had a recurring dream, for as far back as I can remember.  I’m walking through an abandoned house.  It’s 70’s in styling and pretty much vacant.  There are many levels and what seems to be dozens of rooms.  There is always a hidden room, and I always find it, but there’s never anything shocking in its discovery.  I had the dream again last night, but this time the house looked like it had been sitting vacant for decades.  Trees and vines were growing in through the windows.  Near the edges of the rooms the floors had buckled from the rain damage.

I finally found the hidden room and ventured to the window across the decaying floor.  It was a high room and I could see down into the yard through the branches.  A young, cotton haired child (me?) stood in the yard of a tiny, decrepit trailer, looking up toward me.  I wondered if that child ever came over here to investigate the house.

Hi, I’m Carole Baskin and I’ve been writing my story since I was able to write, but when the media goes to share it, they only choose the parts that fit their idea of what will generate views.  These are my views and opinions. If I'm going to share my story, it should be the whole story.  The titles are the dates things happened. If you have any interest in who I really am please start at the beginning of this playlist: http://savethecats.org/

I know there will be people who take things out of context and try to use them to validate their own misconception, but you have access to the whole story.  My hope is that others will recognize themselves in my words and have the strength to do what is right for themselves and our shared planet.
