Case of The Dykebar Murder Affair
News of the Times Episode 439 | 1821
1926 Scotland. Dykebar Mental Hospital staff are going on a picnic, as they have done before, in the nearby beauty spot. Euphemia has recently broken off more personal relations with a fellow male nurse but remains on friendly terms with him.
The male nurse in question is known as a quiet young man, a but odd, but nothing untoward. At the end of the picnic as everyone packs up and heads back to the mental institute where they work and live, 20 year old Euphemia and 26 year old Robert Handley trail behind slowly. Staff go in and go to bed without waiting.
The next morning there is no Euphemia although Handley is there, calmly having his breakfast. When questioned, he states she had gone away.
What unfolds is a brutal outrage and murder, the prime suspect being easily named. What is more alarming – it would seem that Handley had his own psychoses with revelations of his enjoyment of inflicting cruelty.
This case was major news in Scotland at the time. Was he insane or not? And if so, how did he manage to get a series of jobs in mental health institutions?
We take a look at the background, the crime, the capture and the verdict in today’s episode of the Dykebar Murder Affair.
Today’s further particulars story at the end of this episode from 1912 recounts the end of a 5,000 year odl romance as the woman , after 5,000 years, finds her husband’s jealous nature too much to bear and wants a divorce.
Hosted by Robin Coles.
