Welcome to Episode 19 of the Catholic Bible Daily Reflections Podcast (Daily Reflection #19). Today we are discussing Genesis chapters 40-41 of the NRSV version of the Catholic Bible and reflecting on these events from a today perspective.

We see in chapters 40 and 41 that Joseph, while still in prison on a false charge, correctly interprets the dreams of two prisoners. Later, Joseph interprets the dreams of the pharaoh, and Joseph presents a reasonable plan to the pharaoh to survive the coming famine foretold by God in the dreams. Pharaoh elevates Joseph to power, to become pharaoh’s number two man in all of Egypt to oversee Joseph’s plan for the famine. Joseph is then married to an Egyptian daughter of pharaoh’s priest, and has two sons, Manasseh and Ephraim. These two sons will be brought into God‘s covenant and inheritance later by their grandfather, Jacob, as we will see in later chapters.

Welcome to Episode 18 of the Catholic Bible Daily Reflections Podcast (Daily Reflection #18). Today, we are discussing Genesis chapters 38 and 39 in the NRSV version of the Catholic Bible.

We see Judah, through whom God has a plan to bring his covenant and blessing, and through whom God plans to reconcile the world back to him - King David and Jesus descend from Judah. Judah separates from his family and lives in Canaan, marrying a Canaanite woman. He has 3 sons, 2 of which were very wicked and refused to have descendants according to God's plans for their lives. They are killed by God, and then Jacob refuses to have his daughter-in-law Tamar marry the 3rd son and have children, so she devises a devious plan to get descendants through Judah. Her son, Perez, is whom God will use as the descendant of King David and Jesus, showing us God's will be done and that God will use imperfect people and events to bring about miracles.

We later see Joseph, a slave in Egypt, accused of assaulting his master's wife. He is thrown into prison, but he remains loyal and faithful to God through everything. Joseph is part of God's plan to save the Israelites, but he must undergo testing, trials and tribulations, which we continue to see in these chapters.

Welcome to Episode 17 of the Catholic Bible Daily Reflections Podcast (Daily Reflection 17). Today we are discussing Genesis chapters 36-37 in the NRSV version of the Catholic Bible and reflecting on these events from a today perspective.

We see Esau’s line of descendants and that these descendants put kings in place to rule over them, well before Israel, who are right led by God on the path in the covenant and promise. We see Jacob having his dreams of greatness years before God’s plan unfolds, and the start of Joseph’s faith journey and wilderness season with God.

Welcome to Episode 16 of the Catholic Bible Daily Reflections Podcast (Daily Reflection 16). Today we are discussing Genesis chapters 33-35 and reflecting on these events from a today perspective.

We see Esau and Jacob finally meet, and their reunion went very differently than Jacob had thought it would. We see in Shechum the very terrible events involving Jacob’s daughter, Dinah, and Jacob directing the entire family to purify themselves and get rid of idols. They repent and God then renews his blessing over Jacob. Rachel dies in childbirth with Benjamin, and she is buried in Bethlehem. We now have the 12 tribes of Israel.

As Jacob’s faith in God is growing, so is his family. He has 4 wives, 11 sons and 1 daughter at the time he is living with his Uncle Laban. He will soon have his last son, making 12 - the future 12 tribes of Israel. Jacob wrestles at Peniel with a man of God, and is then named Israel. We look at these historical events with perspective of today’s time.

Welcome to Episode 14 of the Catholic Bible Daily Reflections Podcast (Daily Reflection #14). Today we are discussing Genesis chapters 29 and 30 in the Catholic Bible and reflecting on the events of these chapters and comparing the example and lessons against today’s time.

We see Jacob marry 4 wives as he is working and living with his Uncle Laban. These wives bear him 11 sons and 1 daughter, and we will in later chapters see a 12th son added to Jacob’s family, making the 12 Tribes of Israel as we know them in Israelite history. Jacob’s faith is growing and we see God’s protection over Jacob and the growing nation. There are many comparisons and examples we can see from these events helpful to us today.

Jacob is greatly blessed and he begins his faith journey in God’s covenant and promise, while Esau heads in a more worldly path there in the land of Canaan. Two paths, interesting discussion with comparisons, examples and lessons for today.

We see in these chapters that God’s promise and covenant with Abraham endures, now inherited by Abraham’s son, Isaac. Isaac is blessed and protected by God, Abraham dies, Esau and Jacob are born, and Esau sells his birthright to Jacob. We see interesting comparisons to today when it comes to God’s promises, blessing and protection in our own lives, as well as the importance of our God-given birthright and inheritance.
