This week I’m joined by THE Troy Fraiser who is one part of the Revived Studio/Revived Thoughts podcast empire. He joins me to discuss why Church history matters and what we can learn from it. What does this have to do with apologetics? The past 2,000 years of the church have been nothing but an apologetic to who God is and what His People, the Church, do in history!
Because Troy is so knowledgeable on the subject the interview HAD to be split up into two parts. In this first part, we talk about what is interesting enough about church history to dedicate a show to it. We talk about the sung and unsung heroes in brief. Then we talk about what church history is and who should be included. Finally, we talk about the pride we should have in a God who moves people to do what the great cloud of witnesses to the faith has done to get us to where we are today – and how we should learn from them so we can grow and go and not shrink and dink – around.
Next week is part 2 with even more goodness in store. Check the links below!

The Christian is commanded to take every thought to obey Christ (2 Corinthians 10:5). It’s not just in the realm of morality or on Sundays. It doesn’t involve just the personal thoughts or the public actions. Every thought is to be conformed to the sovereignty of God. Even our apologetics? Even our starting points for how we view facts? Every. Thought.
Of course this is easier said than done and even the Apostle Paul knew that. It’s why it’s called a sanctification process and not a moment. How we interact with the brute facts of this world and those messages that entice us away from God’s path are to be responded in the biblical way. We are to be corrected by the Word of God especially if we find ourselves to have a wrong intrepretation of God’s Word. We are called to live rightly by democracy rule. God is a monarchy and we are called to serve the King as sons and daughters.
As we are demolishing arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, let us always seek to obey Christ.

What do you mean facts don’t change hearts? You just build up enough facts on top of someone they can’t help but change their minds. While that might be true of some low investment beliefs think about something like the abortion debate. Does talking about the science of human life at conception and the different DNA between mother and child convince the other side that the murder is wrong? Not even medical doctors change their minds with their beliefs on that subject. So while you may be able to convince someone that Jesus existed or that he was looked up to as a leader and teacher, pushing them over the edge to believing that He died to save you from your sins is something that would so oppose their underlying belief system that moving them from that spot would be difficult – one could even say it would take an act of God to accomplish.
So we look at the relationship facts and faith play in a person’s worldview and show while facts are not to be fully dismissed they aren’t always the kill shot we’re looking for. Human nature doesn’t work that way. And greater still – it’s exactly what The Bible tells us to expect.

Listen you illogical Christian, we can talk about if God exists but you have to not rely on your ultimate standard or any scholar who is a Christian. You can’t rely on anyone philosopher older than 20 years ago because they’ve all been proven wrong and you definitely can’t rely on anything in your Bible. Oh, also I can use science, reason, logic, trusting of my senses, and the morality I subscribe to and no I don’t have to prove it. There – now we’re on neutral ground. And go. – – – This isn’t a war between faith and science; it’s the war between faiths.

Give me just the facts and only then will I believe. No. No. Not those facts I don’t like those facts! The idea that one starts with zero assumptions and believes ideas based on just the facts is nice thinking but it’s not how people think. Where everyone starts thinking is through their presuppositions – the starting point where one filters the facts through.
It’s inescapable and we delude ourselves in thinking it’s different. We want to believe we are Spock that divorces himself from emotion and only accepts the logic of the situation. But wait – logic? In a purely natural world that has no transcendental Mind, how is logic to be trusted or even thought of as real? Plus, just logic is not how humans think.
Everyone has a place for faith and it starts with those ideas that they first bring to the table and are really hard to change. Because they inform how one thinks about the complete scope of all reality.
Jim, we’re human not a Vulcan philosopher!

The fight of the 20th century, folks! Who will win in the the two giants in their field? Will it be Faith which seems to be slowing down from its prime? Or is it Reason; the newcomer who claims to be the unfeeling, unemotional piece of iron? There can only be one winner! Well, uh actually, when it comes down to it everyone has faith in their reasons. The real question is, what worldview supports and allows for reason to take place?
We begin the first chapter of our book looking at the alleged fight between faith and reason. Properly defining the terms is always a key issue and interacting with the claims for some who have a caricature of what faith really is or what Christianity really claims shows how lacking the conversation can be right off the bat. Christians and those wanting to co-op the religion haven’t always done us the best favors with this at times. But today is the day and this episode is the episode where you can subvert all those “nice Christians” on TV who aren’t real and don’t show real Christianity.
Let the world think we’re foolish but let’s not actively give them a true reason.

At the start of this book is the answer to what’s at the center of every worldview. It’s not the end conclusion we need to begin with. It’s the before we start parts that are important. Halfway is not where we want to begin our apologetics and we don’t want to argue for the last quarter of the truth by giving the other side a free platform to stand on. Greg Bahnsen will focus our outlook from start to finish.
So let us begin before the End, shall we?

Scott Christensen has written an amazing book that is not just a dry, academic look at the question of why evil exists. Why? For God’s Glory! Pastor Christensen joins us to talk about his Greater-Glory Theodicy that places God at the center of the picture of the ultimate story of reality.
We then ask Pastor Christensen a pastoral question to help us Christians offer hope to those who experience evil. Even in the life of non-believers, we see one of the biggest emotional questions is why is this evil happening. Pastor Christensen gives an amazing answer that points us to the Creator and Sustainer of all things and ultimately to Christ on the Cross.
Thanks again to Scott Christensen for his work and for coming back on the show.

We have the pleasure of welcoming back to the show our first guest, our first returning guest, and author of the book we recently finished “What About Evil? A Defense of God’s Sovereign Glory” – Pastor Scott Christensen. This was such a great discussion we wanted to break it up into two different parts. In the first part of the interview, we discuss what a theodicy is and what some of the free will theodicy failures are from one of the more cited explanations for why evil exists.
Scott Christensen kindly sets up the stage for what the question is that his book covers and we jump right into the discussion. This will lead us right into the discussion for next week where we pick back up to talk about if not the free will theodicy with all its issues – what’s the theodicy that best puts God – and man, in their proper place?
