On January 28th, a panel from the US FDA recommended that the devices used to deliver ECT, also known as shock treatment, remain in the most high-risk category reserved for the most dangerous medical devices and not be downgraded to lower risk category.  This week's guest is Dr. John Breeding who was there.  He discusses this great victory.

Endless advertisements on TV portraying a “better” life if you take psychiatric drugs can only mean one thing – someone is making an awful lot of money off of them.  The pharmaceutical industry is a multi-billion dollar enterprise – in fact, hundreds of billions of dollars are being made yearly off prescription drugs.  Psychiatric drugs such as antidepressants like Prozac or antipsychotics like Zyprexa compose some of the most lucrative drugs on the market for one reason – they are not treating real diseases, but rather behaviors or feelings that change daily, whether on a drug or not. Despite the appearance that the FDA only approves drugs that are “safe and effective,” the evidence is contrary.  Multi-million dollar settlements are paid yearly by big pharma to people damaged by their psychiatric drugs and fines over $1 billion have been paid by pharma for “off-label” marketing of drugs like Zyprexa as a “cost of doing business.” The People's Chemist, Shane Ellison, is a former chemist for Eli Lilly and Co., author and is now a recognized authority on therapeutic nutrition.  He reveals the inner workings of the psychiatric/pharmaceutical industry in today's 38-minute show.

While there is never one simple explanation for what drives a human being to commit unspeakable violent acts, all too often the common denominator has surfaced that they were on or withdrawing from psychiatric drugs.  This week's guest is CCHR's U.S. President, Bruce Wiseman, who will discuss the relationship between these drugs and senseless violence.

Alternative ways of helping those suffering from mental disturbances are buried by the marketing hype that “mental illness” is the result of some neurobiological dysfunction or chemical imbalance that can only be corrected with psychiatric drugs. There is no scientific merit to these claims. According to an Office of the Inspector General report, there were over 300,000 elderly nursing home patients in the U.S. who received dangerous, and often fatal, antipsychotic drugs. These drugs double the risk of death and triple the risk of stroke in elderly. While life is full of problems, and sometimes those problems can be overwhelming, it is important to know that psychiatry, its diagnoses and its drugs are the wrong direction to go.
