Farmer Ralph Johnson feels that this sign is the most powerful for healthy plant growth, even more potent than Cancer. How does he know this? He's spent 30+ years planting by the moon and paying close attention to the whole ecosystem, from soils to insects to plants. Go Scorpio!

Biodynamic Gardening Report 53—May 22-28, 2015 

We're experiencing a stretch of barren days this week in the biodynamic garden. While we don't want to plant or transplant during this time, barren days can be well spent eradicating garden pests, weeding, and working ground. Sprinkling the ashes of a dead gopher's pelt around the garden-yard-field has been reported to keep these destructive pests away from the tasty roots of edible plants for months. Sound weird? If it works, who cares? We will definitely report on our progress from "peppering" the yard with gopher ashes but we're not promising to skin and field dress our own varmint, regardless of what Ralph says. !

In one of the last episodes of our first year of podcasting about the forecast for gardening by the moon with San Luis Obispo County biodynamic farmer Ralph Johnson, we discuss the productive sign of Pisces—one of the best days for planting—as well as producing a pound of dry farmed tomatoes from just 6 ounces of water. All the water gets applied during the germination and seedling stage. Once they get planted in the field, however, they're on their own. Good thing tomatoes from Jrjohnson Biodynamic Farms look as burly as quarterbacks: hearthy plants!

Biodynamic Gardening Report 46—April 3-9, 2015

It's time for tomatoes: yes! So far this year, we've got five healthy volunteer Stupice tomato plants which we bought from Ralph Johnson and Jrjohnson Biodynamic Farms last year as well as three new heirlooms that will do well in our cooler coastal climate: San Francisco Fog, Principe Borghese, and Green Zebra. We've also got a couple of mystery tomatoes that emerged from our not-hot-enough compost bin that could be Cobra—which we often consume—or maybe it's one of the parents that produced this hybrid. We won't know for a while: science experiment!
