Scripture: Luke 9:51-9:62

Our Road To The Cross sermon series will take us on the road that Jesus walked with His face resolutely set toward Jerusalem. Over and over again (Luke 9-19) Luke's gospel informs us that Jesus knew the cross awaited Him in Jerusalem and He was determined to go there. For us. Our text informs us that we are living in grace-extending days and called to Jesus-first discipleship.

As we begin to trace the journey that Jesus takes to go to the cross, we are reminded of what true discipleship looks like and what it costs. To follow Jesus means that we are radically committed to sharing mercy, not condemnation, even when that will cost us.

Jesus' journey from heaven & back had one, critical, life-giving goal: the cross. His goal, motivated by His incredible and unconditional love for mankind, was firmly decided and pursued - and He now calls us to pursue Him with the same passion.

No one ever taught us how to be a husband or a wife, how to be a parent or a son; in the same way we all have different takes on what a friend should be or not be. For some, friendship is synonym of support and companionship, while for others it's a word linked to emotions of betrayal, hurt, mistrust... We need to be reminded that the good things that God designed for our benefit are often corrupted by sin and the versions we've experienced are far from the original design. We are called to go back to the blueprints and take advantage of the amazing benefits God has placed all around us in the church.

More than ever, our world is starving for relationship. Scripture presents friendships as a unique opportunity for loving relationships with others as we love our friends sacrificially. Friendships of this sort can be meaningful and incredibly life-giving. Ultimately, friendship finds its greatest fulfillment in relationship with God, something made possible because of Jesus.

Mentorship and discipleship are essential parts of how the church continues from one generation to another. We all need help to learn how to practically work out the things God has called us to do and we all can help others do the same. The entire church works together to entrust the gospel into the hands of disciples and mentor others in the grace of God.

Christian parenting is about making Jesus known to the next generation as an expression of one's love for God and their kids. Christian parenting involves modeling affectionate authority and teaching and nurturing their kids in the Gospel with regularity, authenticity and wisdom in the context of the community of faith.
