CGU Spotlight

The Inequality and Policy Research Center (IPRC) is an initiative of the Institute for Democratic Renewal. IPRC supports the scientific analysis of political, health, socioeconomic, and group-specific inequality in the United States and abroad. We develop evidence-based policy and program solutions to problems related to inequality.

The annual Pat Reif Memorial Lectureship was created in 2002 in honor of Patricia A. Reif, IHM, PhD. A scholar, educator, and activist, Reif taught philosophy and chaired the graduate department in religious studies at Immaculate Heart College. In 1984 she founded the MA program in feminist spirituality at Immaculate Heart College Center. Active in many social justice issues, including domestic abuse, poverty, immigration, welfare rights, and the anti-nuclear movement, Reif co-founded the Interfaith Hunger Coalition and the Southern California Interfaith Task Force on Central America (SCITCA).

As an initial response to a generous gift by Trustee Emeritus Hazem Chehabi, CGU crafted a transdisciplinary course around artist Saad Yagan’s Gilgamesh series of paintings, studying the unique character of this collection and examining it from numerous perspectives. The course examined the Gilgamesh story, its modern discovery by scholars, and the impact of this discovery on its interpretation, as well as concepts of religion, masculinity, and gender revealed in the ancient text.

For many years, specimens from Paul Gray’s collection of early computers have been a familiar sight in CGU's Academic Computing Building. Kiera Peacock decided to take her passion for museum work and apply it to refreshing the exhibit—and giving greater attention to the work of a man who touched so many lives on campus and off.

Our 92nd Commencement ceremonies were held on Saturday, May 18th.

It was a day full of excitement and pride.

With about 300 master’s and doctoral candidates proudly receiving their degrees, our 91st Commencement ceremonies held Saturday, May 12, marked a truly monumental occasion for our graduates and their family and loved ones, along with faculty, staff, and members of the CGU community.

Acclaimed documentary filmmaker and scholar Daniel E. Walker served as the commencement speaker, while MBA graduate Whitney Martinez (who is also working on a PhD in political science at CGU) was our student commencement speaker.

Alumna Jeanne Holm (MA, Information Systems Management, ’01), who serves as Los Angeles’ city deputy chief information officer/assistant general manager and senior technology advisor to Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, was this year’s Distinguished Alumni Award recipient and gave the commencement charge.

Our honorary degree recipients were Walker, artist and San Diego State University associate Professor Kim Stringfellow, and ayz (pronounced “eyes”) CEO and founder Zubaida Bai. Our Distinguished Alumni Service Awards were given to Ralph H. Miller (PhD, Psychology, ’79) (posthumously), and Felton Williams (PhD, Education, ’85).

For more than 90 years, Claremont Graduate University has been a leader in graduate education. 40 master’s and 19 doctoral degree fields. Limited enrollment, renowned faculty, and small class sizes devoted entirely to graduate study. At CGU we put students first.
