In this special edition of “Chalk Talk,” to kick off Black History Month, I talk with Coach Averion Hurts of Channelview High School, the father of Philadelphia Eagles starting quarterback, Jalen Hurts. Hurts  is one the two Black quarterbacks starting in a Super Bowl for the first time in the history in the NFL’s biggest game. The other is Kansas City's Patrick Mahomes.

Hurts’ father talk about his son’s journey from high school star to Alabama, Oklahoma, and the NFL. He shared what he was like as a child and what makes him most proud as a father. Jalen graduated from college in three years and has an old soul, according to his father. You may have even heard about him being a fan of legendary Grammy Award winner Anita Baker.

I had an entirely different plan for this week’s show then Monday Night Football and Damar Hamlin’s tragic collapse  – cardiac arrest during the game. Brandon Scott of Sports Radio 610. A proud Hiram Clarke native, talented podcaster, radio host and writer joins me today to talk Texans, Rockets, and this tragic event and what it means in the big scheme of things.

Of course, we’ll get to what’s happening with the Texans and you’ll hear from Lovie Smith, Brandin Cooks and Jerry Hughes. The Rockets lost a tough one to the Mavericks and I’ll let you hear from head coach Stephen Silas and Kevin Porter Jr. But the biggest story is Damar Hamlin’s cardiac arrest on live TV.

On this week’s show the big interview is with my colleague, Coty Davis, host of “Locked on Texans” podcast and covers the Houston Rockets for several publications. Coty is joining me to talk about the Texans and the Rockets. I’ll also let you hear from former Texans and Browns QB Deshaun Watson as well as Texans head coach Lovie Smith. The Houston Rockets tipped of a stretch that has them playing eight of their next nine games at home.

Later in the show we’ll look at some of the stories making news over the past week including Deion Sanders taking prime time to Colorado. Coach Prime has earned the right to make the move and leaves Jackson State University in a better state than when he arrived. Is there a lesson for other HBCU’s moving forward? Or was what Deion Sanders did at JSU an anomaly?

And last but certainly not least we'll talk a little politics, what in the world is going to happen with the Georgia Senate runoff? What's next and what's on your minds. All of this and more on this week's show.
