    Send us a text

The Chapter One Take Two team has some extra time on their hands these days. We have decided to spend some of this time working to entertain you and bring some laughs. Looking around our home we found many books that we have yet to read so set out to make a dent in our to-do list. Today's episode is The Time Machine, originally published in 1895 by H.G. Wells. We have covered both the 1960 and 2002 film adaptations and so have split the podcast episode into two parts, Part 1 is available here.

Part 2 will become available soon. In the meantime, please take care of yourselves and everyone in your bubble. Remember to practice social distancing, wash your hands and get plenty of rest. It is okay to not accomplish amazing things everyday.

Thank you to all our amazing essential workers, you deserve more recognition than you could ever get.

What to do when you can talk to animals? Go on a voyage of course. On this week's episode Briana and I discuss why films like this are re-made and how Hollywood may better spend their $200 million. This is the first feature film Robert Downey Jr. has done since the end of the Avengers era, interesting choice.

We read The Voyages of Doctor Dolittle by Hugh Lofting for this weeks adaptation review. The book was originally published in 1922 and is the second in the Doctor Dolittle series.

  • Ep 09 - Beautiful Creatures

    Send us a text

"Beautiful Creatures is a 2013 American romantic gothic fantasy film based upon the 2009 novel of the same name by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl". - wiki

We would not call it romantic per say, rather a hormone driven novel. For once though the film was better than the book. Don't agree? Have a listen and see if we can convince you. We discuss everything from sex to the hard and soft rules of magic in this episode. It turned out to be more of a commentary on social norms that we intended but hey that is art for you. It was fun to make this episode and while I will never read the book again, the film is something I'll be happy to have on in the background. We all wish we could do magic right?

I swear a bit more than usual in this episode but what can I say? I am passionate about teenage literature. We are about half way through our Fantasy Season 1 so thank you for listening, we appreciate the love. Next week we will be releasing an episode on Philip Pullman's Northern Lights where we also have a special guest on the podcast so keep an eye out for that.

    Until next time my bibliophiles.

  • Ep 08 - Just Mercy

    Send us a text

In this episode of Chapter One: Take Two we discuss the film Just Mercy which has been adapted from the book written by Bryan Stevenson in 2014. It follows Bryan's experiences as he represents prisoners who have otherwise been lost in the system. This is the first non-fiction book we have covered for the podcast and we are very humbled to bring more attention to the issues with the American justice system and justice systems as a whole. It is hard to hear about the suffering of others but if we do not talk about it then nothing will ever change. We are all more powerful than we think. Don't lose hope. We were very lucky to have guest Fraser Robinson on this week's episode to provide insight into New Zealand law and American politics. Please be aware that we discuss material in this episode that may be triggering to some listeners so remember to take care of yourselves. Thank you for taking the time to learn more about the Equal Justice Initiative. We have included some links below if you would like to find out further information.

  • Ep 07 - The NeverEnding Story.

    Send us a text

Join us and Bastian Balthazar Bux as we travel into The Neverending Story. In a way, we are already travelling together in the neverending story of life. On this adventure we discuss fun topics such as how The Neverending Story II has nearly nothing to do with the book, how much Michael Ende hated the first film and why if you haven't read the novel already, you really should. Briana and I enjoyed this book so much!!! It is another classic that, while it was apparently written for children, explores ides like existentialism and how you can lose who you are while chasing what you think you want. I'm sure you can relate. The book was first published in 1979 before being adapted to film in 1984. Three films and a tv series have been made from the novel as well as the hit song by Limahl - Never Ending Story, ahahahaha. We hope you enjoy our review of the book within a book that has been turned into a film.

  • Ep 06 - Percy Jackson: The Sea of Monsters

    Send us a text

We all wish we had super powers right? I don't know about you but I wish I could control an element. Well Percy Jackson can. He has the ability to breath under water and make large walls of water appear when he is near said water. Why you may ask? Because he is the son of a distant but somewhat caring father, Poseidon. In this episode of Chapter One: Take Two we read, watch and review Rick Riordan's Percy Jackson and the Olympians; The Sea of Monsters. It is the second book in a series of five. Only two books have been made into films but there are talks of a Percy Jackson television series being created. We are hoping for an animation.

This episode covers topics such as; interesting choices of CGI, why it is important for the audience to be able to connect with a character's motivation and why it is bad to have the series ultimate villain already fought in the second film. What did you think of the novel/ film adaptation? You can find us at any of the social media sites below to have a chat.
