Friends of a volunteer firefighter from southeastern Alberta who died in the battle against a fierce grass fire say his loss will devastate the community. James Hargrave, who was 34, was involved in a fatal accident while driving a water truck south of Burstall, Saskatchewan.

Gord Downie, the lead singer and writer of The Tragically Hip has died from brain cancer. He was 53. Downie revealed in the spring of 2016 that he had an aggressive incurable form of terminal cancer called glioblastoma. Post surgery and chemo treatments, the singer was determined to go on one last tour - 15 stops across the country starting in Victoria, BC and ending in Kingston, Ontario this summer.

The city of Raqqa-the capital and essential arms-depot of the Islamic State in Northern Syria has been liberated.

Calgary mayor Naheed Nenshi has held on to his seat in the 2017 Calgary election. Nenshi’s victory comes after an election campaign that political analysts said was particularly divisive.

Nenshi had been trailing Smith in polls by Mainstreet Research and Common Sense Calgary that were released ahead of the election. At the time, political analyst Duane Bratt said there appeared to be an anti-Nenshi vote that was “coalescing around Bill Smith.” This is Nenshi’s third term in office, having been elected as Calgary’s 36th mayor in 2010. He was reelected for a second term in 2013.

In Vancouver, over 2.5 MILLION beverage cups ending up in Vancouver landfills each week. But one organization has an idea that might help with the waste.

Senator John McCain was drawn into a war of words with President Donald Trump. Speaking in a radio interview with WMAL in Washington, Trump told host Chris Plante he’ll “fight back” against John McCain.

TV showrunner Amanda Segel has accused Bob Weinstein, brother of Harvey of sexual harassment. Weeks after multiple sexual assault charges were laid against a Surrey pastor and his wife, a Bible camp on Vancouver Island where he has been listed as a director, may have been the scene of other assaults. Samuel Emerson has reportedly been taken off the board at Cowichan River Bible Camp, although the Canada Revenue Agency’s website still has him listed as a “Director-Trustee Official.” Meanwhile, CKNW has spoken to a woman who says as a teenager she used to be a regular guest at the camp.
