  • EP31 The Under-Utilization of Pharmacists in the US Healthcare System

When you think of a pharmacist, the first thing that probably comes to mind is a person in a white coat behind the counter at a drugstore that prepares your medication for you. However, pharmacists do a lot more than that.

The amount of education and specialization pharmacists receive allows them to work as healthcare professionals in different settings and capacities. The rules of what pharmacists can and can't do have dramatically changed over the years, expanding from only creating medication prescribed to now providing healthcare advice, especially in areas of the country where there is a shortage of medical doctors.

In today's episode, we want to shed some light on how pharmacists can be used in a broader way to help alleviate the strain on the healthcare system. From what their training entails and allows them to do, how history has shaped the profession, and some medication education!

To help educate us, we invited Elizabeth Skoy, pharmacist and associate professor at the North Dakota State University School of Pharmacy, to share with Patty Post of Checkable Health what pharmacists do behind the scenes and how the value of the pharmacist is to be a medication expert. Elizabeth explains how she teaches her students to be accessible healthcare providers for patients while serving as integral members of the healthcare team. Most of the work Elizabeth has done has been to advance the pharmacy profession to expand what it means to be a pharmacist.

Tune in to hear an enlightening conversation about an under-utilized profession to get a better picture of how pharmacy is shaping health care today!

    Topics discussed in this episode:

    • What goes on in pharmacy behind the scenes
    • Background history of pharmacy
    • Pharmacy specialization and education
    • How pharmacists are helping rural communities
    • What sort of help can pharmacists provide patients
    • What is the best way to administer an antibiotic to children
    • Dangers of expired medicine in your medicine cabinet

Did you know that the opal stone is symbolic of health, healing and resiliency? That's how Tammy Lee, founder of Opal Cool and Onyx Cool, named her health and wellness brands that use plant-based cooling technology for a variety of ailments. Opal Cool focuses on women's issues in every stage of their life, from breastfeeding to menopause.

Tammy is speaking with Patty Post of Checkable Health about Opal Cool's products, as well as Onyx Cool's line of injury repair and recovery products. Both brands make products that are backed by clinical studies to heal sports injuries, soothe breast pain, and relieve pain from hot flashes and reduce their frequency.

  • EP28 Addiction Is a Chronic Disease and Not a Personality Flaw

Addiction is a chronic disease whose sufferers have carried a heavy weight of shame and embarrassment. Still, the push for open discussion has caused a shift in how our society views addiction. For instance, we are now seeing that more and more restaurants and bars have mocktails on the menu, and businesses promote physical activities instead of happy hours.

In North Dakota, there's been a lot of progress in reducing the stigma of addiction, but more work needs to be done. First Lady of North Dakota, Kathryn Burgum, is one of the people spearheading this positive change. She is the only First Lady who uses her platform to advocate for recovery, rallying support by working with Recovery Reinvented.

On this episode of Checkable Health's Podcast, First Lady Kathryn Burgum and Patty Post of Checkable Health share their personal stories and struggles with alcohol and the many benefits they've experienced since recovery. They discuss how addiction is becoming less stigmatized and ways North Dakota is helping rural communities battle this addiction.

  • EP27 Women's Sexual Health Is a Personalized Wellness Plan With Rosy

The disproportionate research on men's and women's sexual health is astounding, resulting in a lack of education during medical training. Typically, if one has a health issue, we turn to Google or WebMD to get answers — but we all know that leaves us with even more anxiety and confusion about our bodies.

On this episode of Checkable Health's Podcast, Dr. Lyndsey Harper, a Board-Certified Ob/Gyn and Associate Professor of Ob/Gyn for Texas A&M COM, joins Patty Post of Checkable Health to discuss the disparity between men's and women's sexual health information. Dr. Harper also shares why opening up these conversations on emotional well-being, pleasure, menstruation, and more will help create healthy, empowered young girls and women.

As an Ob/Gyn, Dr. Lyndsey Harper noticed a pattern of concerns among her patients, including pain after sex, vaginal dryness, and low sex drive. In fact, research shows that 43% of women have a sexual health concern. Since many of these topics and issues were never discussed in medical school, Dr. Lyndsey wasn't equipped to address them adequately. So, she thought of a new-age way to help. Meet Rosy.

Named in Forbes' Top 53 Women Disrupting Healthcare, Dr. Lyndsey Harper created the Rosy app to give personalized wellness plans for women of all ages and sexual preferences. Each plan brings an evidence-based path to sexual wellness to help women meet their unique goals. From traditional therapies like CBT to surprising evidence-based treatments like erotica, Rosy uses a holistic model to combine medical, mental, and social approaches to treatment.

Tune in for a meaningful discussion on why we need to bring more awareness to women's sexual health issues and how to make the subject less taboo in the doctor's office and at home!

  • EP25 Obesity Is a Chronic Disease, Part 2

Obesity is a complex disease that affects almost half of all adult Americans. In fact, 42% of the US population is considered obese. Obesity can't be treated with one single method. It requires a holistic approach specific to each patient based on individual needs but generally includes prescription medicine, lifestyle changes, therapy, and sometimes surgery.

On this second episode of a two-part series, Patty Post of Checkable Health is back to discuss combating obesity with Physician's Assistant Cody Baxter. In this podcast, PA Baxter describes different medications currently used to treat obesity, including the new and successful class of injectables. As our guest says, "we have to have the intervention meet the intensity of the problem."

Along with weight training and exercise, Cody Baxter also talks about the importance of finding the inner strength to accept progress and not strive for unattainable perfection. With mental health issues and shame often intertwined with obesity, it's easy for one wrong decision to cause you to lose hope and slip back into old habits.

Body image and self-acceptance are key when battling obesity. Negative feelings and self-talk typically begin in childhood for many people, and the patterns surrounding us as adults are often adopted into our lives. Weight loss management doctors like PA Baxter aim to address these underlying issues that come with battling obesity to help people find a path to a healthier life.

  • EP24 Obesity Is a Chronic Disease, Part 1

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, obesity affects an estimated 41.9% of adults in the United States. In fact, obesity-related conditions are among the leading causes of preventable, premature death. Obesity is not a condition. It is a complex disease that requires more attention and less stigma.

On this first episode of our two-part series, Patty Post of Checkable Health chatted with Physician's Assistant Cody Baxter to share his experience treating obese patients at a family medical clinic. While working with adults, PA Baxter found patterns that harm their progress, including sleeping behaviors and mental health issues.

"As the saying goes, 'you can't outrun the fork,' and obesity is a chronic disease that cannot be treated with a simple diet or exercise," said Baxter. That is why it is so important to address each patient's needs individually and look at their lifestyle and medical history to help them craft a plan for long-term success.
