Cheer Chapters: Building Cheer Businesses, Coaching Allstar & Accidentally Becoming an Author

How do you raise meaningful money for cheer competitions and travel without asking the same parents to give up every weekend?

In this episode, I’m sharing the fundraising ideas our cheer community tried over the years—from sausage sizzles, Easter raffles and community events to bingo nights, major raffles, grants and business sponsorships.

But fundraising isn’t only about choosing something to sell.

I’m also talking about the policies teams and committees need before money starts coming in. How should profits be allocated? What happens when volunteer shifts are limited? Can one family claim several positions? Should fundraising be optional, and what happens when parents genuinely don’t have time to participate?

We’ll also look at the side of fundraising I loved most: watching young athletes develop confidence, teamwork, leadership and practical life skills away from the cheer floor.

Rules covering fundraising, raffles, sponsorship, tax and the distribution of money vary by location and organisational structure. Always check the requirements that apply to your committee or program before collecting funds.

What happens when you mix cheer camp, team superstitions, runaway marshmallows and one very funny diary?

In this Behind the Books episode, we’re opening Cheer Camp, Book 2 in the Cheer Diaries series, and getting to know Jayden.

Jayden is funny, welcoming, hardworking and always ready to make his teammates laugh. But behind the jokes, he secretly wants to become a leader and try a different role on the team—even if he sometimes uses humour to avoid putting himself forward.

I’m sharing how Jayden’s personality shaped the story, why his diary is covered in dirt, food marks and folded pages, and how Cheer Camp continues the Comets’ journey through their first all-star cheerleading season.

We’ll also investigate Jayden’s cheer camp survival guide and the unwritten rules every cheerleader understands. Never say “easy,” always respect the lucky socks and remember: when your coach says “one more time,” it’s probably going to be at least three.

A private tumbling lesson shouldn’t stop being useful the moment the coach goes home.

In this episode, I’m sharing my favourite way to structure private tumbling lessons when I don’t have access to a fully equipped all-star gym.

Whenever it is safe and practical, I like to work with the space and equipment the athlete can genuinely access between sessions. That allows me to create personalised drills, record demonstrations and give the athlete a realistic plan they can continue following afterwards.

I explain how I organise the lesson, use video and slow-motion playback, involve parents without turning them into coaches and help athletes understand what they should work on next.

I also share how one athlete progressed towards her back walkover after consistently practising the personalised drills we had recorded during her private lesson.

Tumbling should always be taught by a suitably qualified coach in an appropriate environment. Home practice should be limited to drills the coach has assessed as safe for that athlete, space and equipment, with appropriate adult supervision.

My first Cheer Diaries proof copies arrived—and Cheer Camp had been printed completely on the wonk.

A white line ran across the cover, the interior was misaligned and my exciting first unboxing quickly became a lesson in print quality and self-publishing.

In this episode, I’m sharing how Bookvault responded to the printing problem, why I chose account credit instead of an immediate reprint and everything I discovered while examining the books properly.

I talk through the spelling, spacing and layout issues marked by my rapidly multiplying pink sticky tabs, why professional editing doesn’t replace proofreading the final formatted book and the cover designs I decided to change after seeing them in print.

I also explain why I ordered proofs from Bookvault, Amazon KDP and IngramSpark before allowing the books to reach customers.

This wasn’t quite the glamorous author unboxing moment I had pictured—but it was a very useful reminder that finding problems is exactly what proof copies are for.

Let’s go behind the pages of Team Tryouts, Book 1 in the Cheer Diaries series!

Meet Elodie: a nervous beginner who really wants to try cheerleading, even though new skills and new situations don’t always come naturally to her.

In this episode, I’m sharing how Elodie’s journey begins, what happens at her first all-star cheerleading tryouts and why she was the perfect character to introduce readers to Infinity Cheer Academy. I also explain how the Cheer Diaries books follow one team through an entire season—with a different character taking over the diary in each story.

We’ll chat about confidence, friendship, finding your place on a team and the real cheerleading traditions hidden throughout the book, from drills and music to the team name reveal.

If you have a young cheerleader who is nervous about trying something new—or simply loves funny, relatable stories about cheer—this episode is for you.

This is a bonus episode — and a slightly chaotic one.

During the school holidays, two of our athletes asked if they could interview me. I had no idea what they were going to ask, what the rules were, or why forward rolls were suddenly involved… but I said yes anyway.

We talk cheer gym ownership, competitive teams, favourite levels, stunts, tumble passes, competitions, and what I’d do if someone handed me a million dollars. We also talk about performing, goal setting, growing up as a gym baby, and what the athletes are most excited about this season.

It’s spontaneous, funny, honest, and very real — exactly what happens when you give kids the microphone and let cheer life unfold.

No fluff. No script. Just a fun bonus chapter.

📚 Cheer Chapters – Cheerleading, Creativity & the Author Life

Welcome to Cheer Chapters — where cheerleading led me, slightly sideways, into author life.

I’m Allison. I’ve spent over two decades on the mats, in gyms, at competitions, and behind the scenes building cheer programs, coaching athletes, and learning things the hard way so you don’t have to. This podcast is for cheer parents, coaches, and program owners who want real stories, practical tools, and zero fluff.

I’m also a mum with dyslexia, ADHD, and a brain that enjoys the occasional side quest — so expect honesty, humour, detours, and growth along the way. We talk openly about supporting young athletes, running a gym without losing your mind, navigating cheer life as a family, and what inspired me to start writing books in the middle of it all.

In this podcast, you’ll hear:

• Straight-talk cheer coaching insights

• Behind-the-scenes of gym ownership

• Interviews, wins, fails & lessons learned

• Sneak peeks into my writing & publishing journey

• Real-world cheer life — the fun and the messy bits

New episodes drop regularly. Follow the podcast and join our cheer family — because in cheerleading, every chapter counts.

Allison xx

Coaches, this one’s for you! In today’s chapter, I’m breaking down how to run a high-quality, high-energy, high-progression cheer practice in limited time. I’m sharing the exact warm-up flow, bridge drills, timing work, and class structure I use for my 60-minute rec and comp teams — and how these tiny changes have completely transformed my athletes’ results.

Welcome to Cheer Chapters—where cheerleading led me to author life.

I’m Allison: two decades on the mats, delivering real stories, coaching tools & zero fluff. From sweat and stunts to late-night choreography and the unplanned self-publishing path—this channel is for parents cheering, coaches grinding, and program owners building something authentic.

I’m a mum with dyslexia, ADHD, and enough side quests in my videos to keep things interesting—expect detours, laughs, real struggles & growth.

If you want straight-talk on coaching cheer, how to support young athletes, how to run a gym without losing your mind (trust me—I learned the hard way), or hear what inspired me to write a book—you’ll feel right at home here. I dive into the messy behind-the-scenes, the wins & fails, interviews, and sneak-peeks into my writing—all with humour, honesty, and heart.
