Come with us as we relive sitting in front of the TV on Saturday morning with a big, heaping bowl of sugary cereal.

It’s hard to believe that Jingle All The Way came out 21 years ago. Who would have ever thought that Arnold Schwarzenegger would have made a family Christmas blockbuster?! Well once you see this movie we think you’ll understand why. We enjoyed this movie. Full stop. And we think you will too. But why did we love it so much? Turns out this film is more complex than we initially thought. It’s our last episode of the year, so we figured it would be fun to go out with an interesting choice! A father vows to get his son a Turbo Man action figure for Christmas, however, every store is sold out of them, and he must travel all over town and compete with everybody else in order to find one.

Jingle All the Way is a 1996 American Christmas comedy film directed by Brian Levant and starring Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sinbad, with Phil Hartman, Rita Wilson, Jake Lloyd, James Belushi and Robert Conrad. The plot focuses on two rival fathers, workaholic Howard Langston (Schwarzenegger) and stressed out postal worker Myron Larabee (Sinbad), both desperately trying to get a Turbo-Man action figure for their respective sons on a last minute shopping spree on Christmas Eve.

Episode 65 – Bobby’s World

Bobby’s World was the creation of comedian Howie Mandel at a time when this sort of thing seemed to be all the rage. Why did Television executives think that an animated series for kids based on a stand up routine would be a good idea? Who knows, but it ended up with 8 seasons and over 80 episodes, so they must have gotten something right. Ultimately this show exists as an interesting example of what happens when you take adult oriented stand-up comics and give them a television series geared for children. Neither of us have watched this show in nearly 20 years so we have no idea if it’s any good, but when we get a listener request, duty calls!

Bobby’s World (originally known as The World According to Bobby, to parody The World According to Garp) is an American animated television series, which ran from 1990 to 1998, on Fox Kids. It was about the daily life of Bobby Generic (/ˈdʒɛnərɪk/ GEN-er-ic) and his very overactive imagination on how he sees the world. The show was created by Canadian actor-comedian Howie Mandel. Mandel also provided the voice of both Bobby and his father Howard Generic. It was produced by Film Roman for Mandel’s company – Alevy Productions – and Fox Kids Productions. The Care Bears Movie was one of the very first examples of true Toyeticism. It was created directly from a toy line as a means of selling those toys. The Care Bears are widely known, but this movie seems to have been forgotten by most. However, is that fair? The movie is widely regarded as actually being pretty good, had a star studded cast, and even spawned several additional films, AND multiple television series due to it’s success. I guess the only thing left for us to do, is rewatch it and see if the movie still holds up!

An orphanage owner (Mickey Rooney) tells a story about the Care Bears, who live in a cloud-filled land called Care-a-Lot. Traveling across Earth, the Bears help two lonely children named Kim and Jason find new parents, and also save a young magician’s apprentice named Nicholas from an evil spirit’s influence. Deep within a place called the Forest of Feelings, Kim, Jason, and their friends soon meet another group of creatures, the Care Bear Cousins.

This week’s episode is Dog City…which is another listener request, and one that neither of us recalled that well when we first embarked. But something seemed familiar about Dog City. Perhaps it’s the animation by Nelvana, or maybe it’s the muppets by Jim Henson? Either way this show is an odd hodgepodge of both animation and puppetry. From the film noir to the writing, to the 4th wall breaks, this show has quite a lot to talk about. But do we have anything good to say about it? I guess that’s all the more reason to listen along with us this week!

Dog City is an American/Canadian television series that was produced by Nelvana Limited and Jim Henson Productions and aired on FOX from September 26, 1992 to November 26, 1994 and in Canada on Teletoon until 2000. The show contained both animation by Nelvana, and puppetry by Jim Henson Productions.
