CHINMAYA SHIVAM

Talk 151 Verses 574-581

This final talk further reiterates that bandhan and mukti, bondage and liberation are a figment of Maya and do not exist in Pure Consciousness. The concept of birth and death is also negated, and what exists is the Absolute Reality alone. The Guru assures his disciple that this secret Supreme Knowledge is the essence of Vedanta and he stays immersed in Absolute Bliss.

The last few verses expound on the glory of this prakrana granth, Vivekachoodamani.

Talk 150 - Verses 565-573

Just as the light of the Sun dispels darkness and the fears associated with it, the light of Knowledge dispels ignorance and all its effects, and the entire Universe merges into Brahman. All conditionings are destroyed and the knower of Brahman becomes Brahman. The non-dual state of Pure Consciousness or kaivalya is experienced as brahmabhava. As bondage, non-apprehension and misapprehension are all eliminated, the Jivanmukta is released from the cycle of birth and death. In the final advice the Guru says, bandhan and mukti are both concepts of the intellect, they are not applicable to the Self, but perceived only through the buddhi.

Talk 149 Verses 556-564

For the Man of Realisation, it matters not where, when or how his physical body drops.This aspect is explained through several examples like the moulting of the snake’s skin, the leaves that fall from a tree, the role that an actor plays, the destruction of a flower or fruit - all of these do not affect the source they came from. The Jivanmukta, similarly, is unaffected by the condition of his body, having shed body identification completely.

In Verse 564 it is said that the stone, the tree, the straw, the grain, the husk, are all reduced to ashes when they are burnt, in the same way this whole universe, the body, mind, intellect, senses are all reduced to the Supreme Self when burned in the fire of knowledge. If one has not burnt the false identification, then when the body is physically burnt, the jivatma still continues and one will continue to take new bodies. But if the ignorance is destroyed with the fire of knowledge, then the cycle stops. All the three cycles will stop - the ignorance cycle, the karma cycle and the birth and death cycle stops. This is because the root cause, which is ignorance has been destroyed.

Talk 148 Verses 549-555

The crux of all sadhanas is to remove body identification, and the Man of Realisation having known Brahman, becomes Brahman. His body is like the sloughed snakeskin which may move with the wind, simulating the body of the Jivanmukta which moves by the pranas. Several analogies beautifully explain this aspect of non attachment of the Man of Perfection. He remains intoxicated by the ‘wine’ of the bliss of the Self and lives as Shiva himself, the best amongst the knowers of Brahman.

Talk 147 Verses 544-548

Continuing the discussion on the Jivanmukta, he is described as one who is ever satisfied, always content, with or without any material comforts and having an equal vision at all times. His attributes are explained through pairs of opposites - e.g. acting in the world yet inactive. Completely bereft of all body identification, the Man of Realisation experiences no pleasure, no pain. For an ordinary seeker it is difficult to comprehend the life of such a person and hence it is advised to read about the lives of such saints and spend time with them, to get rid of our own delusions.

Bhootapatih: Who is the Lord of the 5 elements. He is the Lord of the beings and also the Lord of the Ghosts etc. These ghosts wander in the evenings on the earth. Lord shiva is their leader. He controls them and stops them from harming people. He also entertains them and protects the devotees from them. aves the good from their harms by his dance. In Mahābhārata Lord Shiva tells about this to Goddess Umā : None other than me is capable of rectifying the fear from bhootas. Being with them, I protect the beings daily. By my order and command, the boothas don't kill people and I dance before them in the cremation grounds to give them pleasure and bliss and take care of them.

Talk 146 Verses 540-543

The Man of Realisation has no particular distinguishing qualities nor any identification with the body at all, instead he relates with the world of objects in a child-like manner. His choice of clothing is of no consequence to him and the 3 analogies presented liken him to an innocent, unaware child, a madman and a ghost. He lives in isolation and may act in keeping with the prarabdha of the body, but is completely desireless. He may live simply or in a state of grandeur but he remains oblivious to his surroundings and revels only in the Supreme Bliss.

Talk 145 Verses 537-539

The Realised Man is neither elated nor grieves; he is unaffected by all sense contacts. ‘aham’ and ‘mama’ do not plague him and he is oblivious to body identification. Attachments, insistence on results of our actions and ego-centric desires bring worry, but the disciple is satiated with the bliss of Brahman. Realized mahatmas have no concern or anxiety about their basic necessities, but live free, independent and joyously, revelling in Pure Consciousness.

Talk 144 - Verses 530-537

The valid means of knowledge are the shastras and for that, the knower must contact the known appropriately. Direct perception of the Truth is not possible. The Absolute Truth is not dependent on time, place or outward purity, it is effortlessly known in a purified mind and a subtle intellect. Just like the Sun illumines the world, Consciousness illumines the world of waking, dream and deep sleep. Through the continuous practice of nirvikalpa samadhi, the knower of Brahman becomes Brahman.

Rudra: rud means sorrow and the reason of sorrow - Ignorance & attachment. Lord Shiva drives it away and hence he is known as Rudra. The Lord is also named Rudra because he makes us cry and also drives away pains. We have already studied about the limitless compassion and kindness of the Lord but he also punishes us to correct our mistakes so makes us cry. Rudra as the destroyer is also referred here. He destroys the worlds and gives death to the beings. There are many other meanings also which are shared in the talk.
