Talk 95 - Verse 325-328

This talk continues to elaborate on the downfall of an extroverted seeker. In this context the verses give us analogies. Verses 327 & 328 give us steps to identify that brooding, so that one can be freed of this cause of bondage. Verse 328 suggests daily sadhana routine for this challenge.

Durdharsha: Dreadful & Invincible. Lord is said to be dreadful not due to his nature but due to our nature. When we do wrong karmas, then the Lord appears dreadful to us. Also, we do not want to let go of our ego and experience the limitless Truth. We have a natural fear towards the limitlessness. The Lord is also invincible due to His great qualities, strength and wisdom. The vedas say न तत्समश्चाभ्यधिकश्च विद्यते na tatsamaṡcābhyadhikaṡca vidyatē no one is equal to him nor above him.

Dharsha also means to attack or interfere or block someone’s way. No one can attack or block the way of the Lord.

Talk 94 - Verse 322- 324

This talk continues with the importance of alertness and vigilance for the man of wisdom throughout the path to realize the Supreme Truth. The verses caution the seeker, to be extremely alert and not to allow the thoughts of the ego to rise. It concludes with the analogy of the moss on water being similar to Maya covering the knowledge of the wise person

Talk 93 - Verses 318-321

Verses 318 & 319, through analogies, bring out the importance of contemplation for all efforts to culminate in the realization of the Truth, concluding the portion of the contamination of the ego. Verses 320 & 321 are about the importance of alertness and vigilance to exhaust karmas and not create new karmas.

Verse 321 introduces different levels of pramada.

This talk continues on how to cut the bondage of samsara.Sadhana practices and paths are prescribed to eliminate, externally and internally, our thoughts and actions which strengthen our vasanas. These verses logically advise us a process of intelligent control of the effect to destroy the cause for the sorrows of life and be freed from the transmigration cycle.

Hiranyaretaa: One whose seed is golden. The Lord's body is Consciousness. It is not matter, like ours. Hence his seed is also described golden. The Lord is the prime source of creation. He is that from which everything arose and hence he is called hiranyaretaa.

suvarṇa-retāḥ = Of gold semen. At the beginning of creation (of the universe), the seminal energy of the Lord took the shape of a gold egg. The Skānda-Purāna describes it as the ‘creation of the gold egg (brahmāṇḍa)’.

āpa eva sasarjāgre tāsu vīryam-avāsṛjat, tadaṇḍamabhavaddhaimaṁ sahasrāñśu samaprabham.

He first created water and put His semen in that water. It became a gold egg which had a radiance equal to that of the sun, the thousand-rayed. Manu-Smṛti also narrates the same subject.

āpa eva sasarjādau tāsu bījam-avāsṛjat. t

adaṇḍamabhavaddhaimaṁ sahasrāñśu-samaprabham. MS 1.8,9

The Chāndogya Upaniṣad praises the Supreme Lord as being made of gold in every bit of His being.

āpranakhāt sarva eva suvarṇaḥ.

‘Made of gold’ here of course means, ‘of the nature of light’ for it is inconceivable to have God as a modification (of the element/metal) gold.

The word hiranya means hitam and ramyam One which is hitam means that which is benificial to us( i.e . ) good for us. Ramyam means pleasant. The source of creation is both good for us and pleasant to us . The Lord made the world good and pleasant . The nature, the elements etc. are for our own good.

Lord Shiva is contemplated upon in the centre of the surya mandala (planet sun) is also called hiranya retaa as He is fully golden.

Talk 91 - Verses 309-313

Through Verse 309, Shankaracharyaji cautions us that even if the ego is rooted out, it can revive in full force creating mischief. The next 3 verses are about actions, thoughts and vasanas as creating bondage and causing the ego to revive. The verses talk about sadhana to practice to sublimate the vasanas and consequent actions.

Talk 90 : Verses 304-309

The attitude of ego, doership must be renounced with all urgency and know it to be a reflection of the pure unsullied Consciousness. The ego sense is the reason for transmigration and Shankaracharya ji reiterates the importance of eliminating it like one would a thorn stuck in the throat. The sadhana of withdrawal, renunciation of attachments, practice of quietude and then steady contemplation on Brahman are recommended. The slightest inalertness can be catastrophic if the ego sense revives.

Talk 89 : Verses 302-303

Through an interesting analogy of a treasure guarded by a serpent, this talk explains that the wealth of Pure Consciousness is covered by the ego or ahankara. This ego asserts itself constantly through the three gunas and can only be destroyed by the sword of vijnana. The ego is further likened to poison in the seekers journey, hence this is a call to awaken fully and realise the Absolute through complete egolessness.

Prajaapatihi: The Lord of all beings. Prajapatis take the creation forward and do the detailing. Brahmaji creates them. But Brahmaji derives his power from Lord Shiva. Hence Lord Shiva is Prajaapati here.
