Talk 24 - Verse 40 - 42

This verse expresses the enquiry coming from an insecure seeker - his concerns for what will happen once an individual transcends the body identification or when the body dies. Seeking answers, the disciple on the spiritual path, questions the Guru for the means to transcend attachments, overcome the ahankar and develop humility. The Guru’s qualities are expounded as the seeker’s plea for protection.

Talk 23 : Verse 37-39

Having surrendered completely, the fearful student takes refuge of the teacher, imploring him to lift him from the ocean of samsara. Shankaracharya ji gives the qualities of a Guru as Shanta and Mahanta and explains further with 2 analogies. First, the teacher is compared to the season of spring when nature blooms and blossoms, spreading joy

everywhere. In the second analogy, the soothing presence of the teacher is compared to the cooling rays of the moon on the scorched Earth. To find such a teacher is a very rare blessing and this talk explains it in detail.

This talk poetically describes the thirst of the prepared seeker who is steeped in the Bhavaroga cycle, pleading to the teacher to show him the means to rise above the false identification. It brings out simplistic qualities of the Guru, empowering the seeker to lift oneself by oneself.

Talk 21: Verse 34

In this talk we see how the student, having done Upasana and Guru Aradhana with devotion, finds the teacher in a happy frame of mind. His objective is to know the true Self and hence tuning with the teacher is most important. Guru Aradhana is explained at all the three levels of one’s personality, seva being most important. The bhava of dedication, surrender and humility are essential to tune the intellect of the student and prepare it to receive the highest Knowledge from the teacher.

Shankaracharyaji says that Bhakti is the intensity with which I enquire into my own nature. This talk explains the concept of bhakti in an integrated mind and intellect that has been prepared with the sadhanas of shatka sampatti. Vairagya helps one to withdraw and the bhava with which one enquires in the seat of contemplation is Bhakti. It further explains the 2 types of bhaktas and then goes on to the seeker’s approach to the Teacher and the courtesy of questioning.

This talk discusses the nature of vairagya which is born out of viveka and the firm determination that Brahman alone is the Absolute Truth. This dispassion arises in a mind that is unaffected by raaga or dvesha. It explains the methods of developing vairagya through satsang, pratipaksha bhavna, dedication of one’s duty to Bhagwan and tapas. Once one is established in vairagya, there is freedom and fearlessness and hence tremendous joy.
