Andhakaasura – soodanaha: Andhaka - Blind Demon Soodhanaha - Destroyer or killer.

Once Goddess Parvati playfully closed the 3 eyes of Lord Shiva with her hands. As the Lord's eyes were sun, the moon and the fire, the worlds became entirely dark for a few seconds. A blind

demon was born from the darkness created. He came to be known as the Son of Parvati and Shiva. Mother Parvati was filled with motherly love for that demon.

Demon King Hiranyaksha pleased Lord Shiva and sought a child since he did not have any heir and Hiranyakashipu had 5 children. So Lord Shiva gave Andhaka to him. Hiranyakashipu became arrogant soon after. Lord Vishnu took Varaha Avatar and killed him. He appointed Andhaka as the demon king. But Andhaka was blind and weak. So his cousins kept making fun of him. So he

quietly slipped into the forest and did penance. Please with his

penance, Brahmaji manifested. Andhaka asked that he should be powerful, Lord the 3 worlds and immortal. Brahmaji gave him the first two but the third one he could not because what is born has to

die. So Andhaka asked that he should die only if he has any bad intentions towards any woman. Brahmaji also blessed him to be young, strong and gave him his vision. Andhaka became mighty

and conquered the three worlds. Once he and his ministers had gone to Mount Mandara and there they saw a beautiful woman(Goddess Parvati) and a Yogi(Lord Shiva). They told the yogi to send this woman to their Master Andhaka. Yogi refused.

Andhaka attacks the Yogi.

Kaamaaree or the Foe of desire. Lord Shiva sees Mother Parvati and kaamdev gets his chance to shoot the arrows and Lord Shiva is affected. He describes the beauty of Parvati and wants to embrace her. But he snaps out of it and wonders how could he get deluded. He looks around and sees Kaamdev who shoots another arrow at Lord Shiva. But Lord Shiva has come back to His true nature and so he does not get affected. Instead, He burns Kaamdev with his Third Eye. Rati is sad and pleads to Lord Shiva to revive Kaamdev. Indra also explains to Lord Shiva that Kaamdev was doing this only to ensure that Tarakasura is killed. Lord Shiva then blesses Rati that Kaamdev will be there in subtle form and during Krishna Avatar he will be born as Pradyumna and she can unite with him then.

This story has many points to learn and also helps one to know about sublimation and destruction of Kaama.

Kaamaaree or the Foe of desire. The story of Shiva burning Kaama is popular in all purānas. This shows the Lord’s control over the senses and his victory over lust. This helps us also to gain victory over lust and desires to attain Self-Realisation.

This name is being explained in 3 Videos. In this video we see the circumstances that led Kaamadev to attack Lord Shiva. Tarakasura is a demon who got a boon from Lord Brahma that only a son of Lord Shiva can destroy him. Lord Shiva was in a deep state of dispassion after Sati immolated herself. Lord Shiva was not in any mood of a new marriage etc. So to tempt him, Indra requested Kaamadev who agreed and planned to attack Lord Shiva but could not find a single entry point where he could attack the Lord because the Lord had controlled all his senses and the

mind.

One who has Kapaala or a Skull. It is the 10 th rudra of ekadasha rudra.

Padmapurana Shrishti khanda 17 says:
Once Lord Shiva went to a yagna of Brahmaji wearing skulls. He was not allowed entry. The Lord had to show his power and glory. Then they sought forgiveness from the Lord and He was given a seat to the North of Brahmaji.

At another instance, He had once cut the head of Brahmaji with his nail for telling lies about having found the top of the Infinite coloumn of light. One whose hands were glued to Brahma’s head which was cut by Him by his nails is Kapaalee. He begged for alms from Annapoorna, his own wife. He went to Kashi and then purified himself with Ganga Snan. This was the prayaschitta he did to set an example for others.

Lord Shiva holds the skull of Brahma the creator. This shows that the Lord is above all creators. This also shows the Eternity of the Lord. Even Brahma the creator has a fixed life time but Lord Shiva is Eternal.

Skull is also the symbol of human pride. He takes it away from us and makes us humble. He destroyed the Daksha Yagna also in this

form of Kapaalee.

दक्षाध्वरध्वंसकरः कोपयुत्कमुखाम्बुजः |

शुलपाणिः सुखायास्तु कपाली मे हृहर्निशम् || (शैवागम)

Ugra means supreme, above all or great. One who overpowers everyone . One who is the greatest . One who is above all worldly things and pleasures. Ugra is also the name of one one of the eight forms of shiva . Ugra is the name of shiva in the form of air or is called as Yajamana Murti also. This name is praised in the vedas नम उग्रायच भीमायच nama ugrāyaca bhīmāyaca - Anuvak 8 Mantra 4 of Rudram Another meaning is One with anger (to kill enemies) One who is never overpowered by sin, disease, hell etc. One who subdues these by force and protects His devotees.

We must not be complacent towards our 6 enemies. We must ruthlessly eliminate them. We generally justify these 6 enemies and let them thrive. We must substitute selfishness with

selflessness, anger with empathy, greed with contentment and an inspiring goal, delusion with knowledge and living the knowledge, intoxication with humility and jealousy with admiration.

Shivā - the wife of Shiva - umā . Her name is shivā as she has all

the qualities of Shiva and as she is one with Shiva. Priya - beloved. Shivaapriyaha – One to whom Shivaa or Parvati is dear and One

who is beloved of Shivaa or Parvati. This form of Shiva is called

umesha in the Shiva-Aagamas This form of Shiva is praised in the Kaivalya Upanishad as उमासहायं परमेश्वरं प्रभुं umāsahāyaṃ paramēṡvaraṃ prabhuṃ Lord Shiva also did penance to obtain Parvati. Both of them

infact have done penance to obtain each other. The wonderful relationship of rudra ( Shiva ) and umā is explained in rudrahrudayopanishad

रुद्रो नर उमा नारी तस्मै तस्यै नमो नमः

रुद्रो ब्रह्मा उमा वाणी तस्मै तस्यै नमो नमः

रुद्रो विष्णुरुमा लक्ष्मीस्तस्मै तस्यै नमो नमः

रुद्रः सूर्य उमा छायातस्मै तस्यै नमो नमः

रुद्रः सोम उमा तारा तस्मै तस्यै नमो नमः

रुद्रो दिवाउमा रात्रिस्तस्मै तस्यै नमो नमः

रुद्रो यज्ञ उमा वेदिस्तस्मै तस्यै नमो नमः

रुद्रो वह्निरुमा स्वाहा तस्मै तस्यै नमो नमः

रुद्रो वेद उमा शास्तं तस्मै तस्यै नमो नमः

रुद्रो वृक्ष उमा वल्ली तस्मै तस्यै नमो नमः

रुद्रो गन्ध उमा पुष्पं तस्मै तस्यै नमो नमः

रुद्रोऽर्थ अक्षरः सोमा तस्मै तस्यै नमो नमः

रुद्रो लिङ्गमुमा पीठं तस्मै तस्यै नमो नमः

Rudra is man and umā is woman salutation to both of them .

Rudra is brahma ( the creator ) umā is vāni ( sarasvati ) salutations

to both of them . Rudra is Vishnu umā is lakshmi salutations to

both of them . Rudra is sun umā is cāyā ( the deity of shadow )

salutations to both of them . Rudra is moon umā is the stars

salutations to both of them . Rudra is day umā is night salutations

to both of them . Rudra is yagya ( sacred sacrifice ) umā is vedi

salutations to both of them . Rudra is agni ( fire deity ) umā is

svāha ( the wife of agni . The mantra through which the gods get

their oblations ) salutations to both of them . Rudra is tree umā is

creeper salutations to both of them . Rudra is fragrance umā is

flower salutations to both of them . Rudra is meaning umā is word

salutations to both of them .

They both spend quality time with each other and are responsible

for the Creation, Sustenance & Destruction.

There is mutual love, trust and space between them. Parvati never

complains about Shiva not giving Her attention and meditating all

the time Or about not having a home or comforts. She does not

feel jealous of Gangaji.

They both have accepted each other as they are. She decorates

herself with good clothes & ornaments. Shiva is bhasmanga.

Both their children are not born out of physical union.

Shiva helps Parvati to know who is Ram truly and also helps her

to worship Ram. He is her Guru also in the Guru Geeta and Lord

Shiva explains about Guru Tattva to her.

संन्ध्याधर्म - दीनात्ययो हरिकराघात-प्रभुतानक

ध्वानो वारिदगर्जितं दिविषदां हृष्टिच्छटा चंचला |

भक्तनां परितोष-बाष्प-वितति-वृष्टि-मयूरी शिवा

यस्मिन्नुज्ज्वल-ताण्डवं विजयते तं नीलकण्ठं

भजे ||54||

Shivananda Lahiri Verse 54 says – I worship Nilakantha, the blue-

throated Shiva, the peacock(also blue-throated) that excels by His

beautiful dance, having the time of dusk as the close of

summer(i.e the beginning of rainy season when peacocks dance),

the sound of drum beaten by Vishnu’s hand as thunder peals, the

eyes of the celestials as lightning, the blissful tears of devotees as

rain, and the Divine Mother Parvati as the peahen.

Shiti - white or dark blue. Kantha – neck. One who has a white and dark blue neck . Lord Shiva’s neck was white like other parts of his body before drinking hālāhala . After drinking hālāhala a

portion of the neck turns blue. The remaining portion continues to be white - Shitikantha. Bhatta Bhaskara says one thousandth part

of the throat became blue.

In Anushashana Parva of Mahabharata Lord Shiva tells the reason why

his neck is blue. He states:

देवकार्यार्थ सिद्ध्धयर्थम् पिनाकं मे करे स्थितम् ।।

इन्द्रेण च पुरा वज्रं क्षिप्तं श्रीकाङ्क्षिणा मम ।

दग्ध्वा कण्ठं तु तद्यातं तेन श्रीकण्ठता मम ।।

The bow Pinaka is always in my hand for accomplishing the purposes of the deities. In days of yore, Indra, desirous of acquiring my prosperity, had hurled his thunderbolt at me. With that weapon my throat was scorched. For this reason I have become blue-throated.

The story of Indra hurling Vajra at Rudra's throat is described in Chapter 14 Kartikmasa Mahatmya, Vaishnava Khanda of Skanda Mahapurana.

Trilokesha – The Lord of the Three worlds. Here the word three worlds means the Earth, the interspace and the heavens. Lord Shiva is the lord of the worlds also implies that he is the lord of everything which exists in the worlds and all the beings. He is the lord of the demigods living in upper worlds and the demons living in lower worlds too . He is also the lord of those living on earth .

Though every world has its own ruler and leaders, Lord Shiva is the supreme leader of them all . He is the lord who appoints other gods on their tasks and positions. This can be seen in Shiva purāna

. He is the one who appointed Vaishravana - Kubera as the keeper of wealth etc. Stories of every demigod worshipping lord Shiva for gaining their positions is found in various puranas. In shanti

parva of Mahaabhaarata also

भूय : स भगवान् ध्यात्वा चिरं शूलवरायुध :

तस्य तस्य निकायस्य चकारैकैकमीश्वरं

देवानामधिपं चक्रे देवं दशशतेक्षणं

The Lord who has the great trident as his weapon thought well and appointed rulers and leaders for each and every world . He made the one with thousand eyes ( Indra ) as the king of the demigods.

Shivananda lahiri says

त्वमेको लोकांना परमफलदो दिव्य-पदवीं

वहन्त-स्वन्मूलां पुनरपि भजन्ते हरि मुखाः |

कियव्दा दाक्षिण्यं तव शिव मदाशा च कियती

कदा वा मद्रक्षां वहसि करूणा-पूरित-ध्क्षा ||१८||

Thou alone, O Lord, art capable of giving liberation - the highest of all rewards - to men. Other deities like Vishnu only worship Thee, occupying the celestial states awarded by Thee. Unlimited is Thy liberality to devotees, and unlimited, too, are my worldly

desires. When art Thou, therefore, going to save me with Thy Compassionate look?

He is also called Sarvalokakrit or Lokakartha - Creator of 14 worlds. Sarvalokaprajapatihi: He is the master of all the worlds and all the inhabitants therein. lokaaha Sthaanaani, prajaaha tatra

nivasantaha cetanaaha, sarvaasaam lokaprajaanaam patihi svami

Lokapaalaha is also one of His names. He who protects the worlds. Shiva does so, taking the form of the well-known protectors of the worlds like Indra.

Sharvaha means one who destroys everything in the end. Sharvaha is one of the eight important forms of lord Shiva . This name is also praised in the Vedas in Aghora mahā mantra – Sarvebhyah Sarva Sharvebhyo Namaste astu Rudrarupebhyaha.

He who destroys or inflicts pain. He destroys all creation at the time of Samhaara. Shrnaati hinasti anta-kale sarvam iti. He is the presiding deity over fire in this form. Vedas say - Sarvebhyah

sarva Sharvebhyo namaste astu rudra rupebhyaha.
Life is uncertain but death is certain. When we know that we go back to HIM alone, there is no fear of death. Eg. A Dog eager to meet the Master behind the house door, waits in anticipation and is excited to meet his Master. Same way, when we know that the Lord awaits us, we drop all fear of death. 



Shiva removes sins of devotees and confers liberation on them. Rudra prashna praises Shiva as the caring master of all life forms, calling Him Sharva. Namah Sharvaaya ca pashupataye ca.

Shiva purana says Sharva is the name of that form of Shiva that presides over the earth Urvi Sarvaatmikaa murtir iti shaastrasya

nischayaha. He is also the one who bears us all in the form of earth.

Sharva is also the 9 th form of the Ekadasha Rudra. He took this form and destroyed Tripurasura, humbled Lord Yama. He has an axe in this form.
