  • 015 of 108 Names of Lord Shiva : Ambikanaathaha - The Lord of Ambika
Ambikā - Mother Goddess. Nātha - Husband.
Ambikānātha means Lord of Ambika . Husband of Ambikā . One who has been chosen by Ambika as her beloved husband. One whose Lord is Ambika. In our culture husband and wife are equal and support each other in evolution by following dharma. no one is superior or inferior.
Ambikaayaahaa naathaha - The Beloved or Lord of Ambika/Parvati
Ambikaa naathaha yasya saha - One whose master is Parvati

The popular story of Shivas marriage with goddess pārvati is found in most of the major purānas . Mother pārvati did tapas ( penance ) for marrying the Lord . She gained him through her austerity and owned him by true love. So Ambikānātha
also means one who is owned by Ambikā .

Parvati’s hand shows that her husband will be

    yogi nagno aguno akaami maatrutaatavivarjitaha

amaano ashivaveshascha patirasyaahaa kiledrsha - Shiva Purana Rudrasamhita chapter 8 verse 11
Her husband would be an ascetic, naked, nirguna, free from lust, without parents, deprived of honour, and his dress and his manners would be inauspicious.
These indicated Lord Shiva and she started doing
penance to attain HIM as her Husband.

She left eating food and lived only on fruits. Then she left fruits and lived on
leaves. She left eating leaves also and she came to be called Aparna. Then
    Brahmaji’s vani was heard:
Listen o daugher of the mount-king; your desire is accomplished. Cease all
your rigorous penance, the slayer of Tripurari will soon be yours.
What was Lord Shiva doing so far after Sati’s immolation? Shivji loved sati
and since she left the body, he became more dispassionate. He used to
meditate or wander taking Ram naam or give upadesh to rishis etc. He felt
sorrow when Sati dropped the body. The misconception about Sati Pratha
originating from here is discussed. One day Sri Ram appeared in front of Lord Shiva. Sri Ram said to Lord Shiva that Sati is born as Parvati and she wants you as her husband. You please marry her. Drop the past.
Shambhoho chittam vashe chaishaa karishyati tapasvinee
sa chaapyena amrte yoshaam na hi anyaam udvahishyati Parvati will attract the mind of Shiva towards herself with the perfoming of
Tapas. Shiva too will marry parvati and no one else.

Shiva-Parvati vivaha is celebrated on Maha-Shivaratri day.

Shiva Parvati are subjectively shraddha and vishwas. In our heart both must be there. Shraddha & Vishwas when we have, then only Atma-jnana happens. Shadanan was born through them. Jnana is product of Shraddha and
vishwas and Jnana kills Tarakasura who is Ignorance and delusion.
Ambika is also Uma. Kenopanishad praises Brahmavidya as Uma haimavati. Lord Shiva is the giver of this Vidya, the Supreme wisdom. Umaa haimavatiti kenopanishat-prasiddhaa brahmavidyaa umaa, tasyaaha patihi padaataa.
It also means Shiva is sought through Brahma-vidya and attained.

  • 013.2 of 108 Names of Lord Shiva : Vishnuvallabhaha - Whose Ishta is Lord Vishnu
Shiva is beloved above all by Vishnu and Vishnu is the utmost favorite of lord Shiva because they are both one and the same having taken different forms to bless the devotees . The oneness and non duality of Shiva and Vishnu is explained , praised and proved in Vedas , Upanishads , puranas and epics.
    In rudrahrudayopanishad
yē namasyanti gōvindaṃ tē namasyanti ṡaṅkaram yē & rcayanti hariṃ bhaktyā tē & rcayanti vṛṣadhvajam yē dviṣanti virūpākṣaṃ tē
dviṣanti janārdanam yē rudraṃ nābhijānanti tē na jānanti kēṡavam
those who bows to govinda ( Vishnu ) bows to shankara ( shiva ) (i.e . ) both are pleased when we bow before any one of them .
Those who worship hari with devotion worship vrushadhvaja ( the one with the bull as his banner ) . One who hates viroopaaksha also hates janārdana . ( i.e . ) hating lord Shiva is equal to hating lord Vishnu . Lord Vishnu is also disrespected when lord Shiva is.
So no hater of Shiva can call himself a devotee of Vishnu and no hater of Vishnu can call himself a devotee of Shiva . Those who dont understand rudra don’t understand kevasha .
ṡivāya viṣṇu rūpāya ṡiva rūpāya viṣṇavē
ṡivasya hṛdayaṃ viṣṇuḥ viṣṇōṡca hṛdayaṃ ṡivaḥ yathā ṡivamayō viṣṇur - ēvaṃ viṣṇumayaḥ ṡivaḥ yathāntaram na paṡyāmi tathā mē svastirāyuṣi
Shiva is in the form of Vishnu and Vishnu is in the form of shiva . Vishnu is the heart of Shiva and Shiva is the heart of Vishnu . Vishnu is embodiment of Shiva and Shiva is embodiment of Vishnu . Till i understand this great secret I will be well and good .
The above mantra is found in the skandopanishad of yajurveda .
    यथा शिवस्तथा विष्णुर्यथा विष्णुस्तथा शिव : ।
    अन्तरं शिवविष्ण्वोश्च मनागपि न विद्यते । । - स्कान्द पुराने
yathā ṡivastathā viṣṇuryathā viṣṇustathā ṡiva : । antaraṃ ṡivaviṣṇvōṡca manāgapi na vidyatē । । - skānda purānē Vishnu is just as shiva and Just as Vishnu is shiva ; there is not even a minute difference between Vishnu and shiva .
Sivananda Lahari in Verse 82 says: Lord Vishnu, who took many forms, as Thy arrow, as Thy mount,
as Thy consort occupying half Thy body, as a boar, as Thy friend, as Thy drummer etc. and who offered his eyes at Thy feet(in place of a lotus flower) - that Vishnu, forming a part of Thy very being, is indeed the most worshipful among the worshipful? If not, he, who is there to excel him?
Mahavishnu is the greatest bhakta of Lord Parameshwara. he follows all methods of Bhakti and enjoys doing so, because he is always with his Lord in all these forms. he enjoyed serving the
Lord by taking many forms. When Lord Parameshwara went to destroy the three cities of the Asuras, Mahavishnu became the bow in His hand. The three cities represent the three states waking, dreaming and deep sleep. Mahavishnu being the protector of the people is used by Shiva as a bow for destroying the negative tendencies during those three states. Vishnu became the Mighty Bull Vrishabha and carried Lord Shiva wherever He wanted to go. Here Vishnu became the servant Dasyam of his Lord. Hari took the form of a boar to find out and reach the feet of the Lord, Here he is doing vandanam to the Lord. As Parvati the consort of Shiva, Vishnu became half
of the body of Shiva by surrendering everything Atmanivedanam. A seeker surrendering everything in him becomes one with Bhagawan, he becomes a part of Bhagawan. hari took the form of
Mohini to infatuate the Asuras while distributing the nectar got by churning the milky ocean. Later showed this form to his beloved Lord Parameshwara and became His friend(sakhya). When Lord Nataraja danced the Cosmic dance, Vishnu played the Mridangam.

  • 013.1 of 108 Names of Lord Shiva : Vishnuvallabhaha - Whose Ishta is Lord Vishnu
One who is the most beloved of Lord Vishnu - Vishnoho Vallabhaha &One whose beloved is Lord Vishnu - Vishnuhu vallabhaha yasya saha. The relationship between Shiva and Lord Vishnu is, they are BFF( best friends forever) and they are relatives too, since Lord Vishnu is considered as Goddess Parvathi's brother. So this makes Lord Vishnu, brother in law to Shiva. They are much more than BFF actually because they worship each other and they are one.
In purānas we can see the friendship , care and love for each other in many occasions . We can also study the stories of Vishnu worshipping Shiva and Shiva worshipping Vishnu in different purānas. Even in Ramayana, Sri Rama worships Shiva and Shiva remembers Sri Rama.

  • 012 of 108 Names of Lord Shiva : Khatvangee - Holds the leg of a cot
Khatvaangee One who has the khatvānga weapon . This weapon is one of the major weapons of lord Sadaashiva . He holds it in one of his ten hands. The form of the katvānga weapon is club or staff
with a skull at the top of it . This khatvānga is also a symbol of human body . Like khatvānga cannot move , do things or anything else without the movement and doer ship of Shiva , the humans
also should understand the doer - ship of Shiva . Only the lord who is residing inside the human body is the prime reason for the lives to prevail and only because of his grace and action we do things . This feeling will help us surrender completely to him and
we will loose ahamkaara - the sense of false I
An ordinary seeker may not understand that why Lord Shiva is interested in his recognition as Khatvangi, by holding a single leg of a wooden cot in his hand. If there were four legs of the cot, it could be assumed that a wooden cot would be made out of it in future for leisurely purpose. But a single leg proves nothing. Even scriptures do not describe any of its weaponry use. Trident is already there as a weapon, which is infallible. Yes, one intention is perceived here that this wooden leg can be used for hand-rest during chanting with rosary. But that is also done occasionally, so what is the secret behind constant keeping of a wooden leg?
“When Brahma spoke untruth, then you chopped off his fifth head. It did not caused death of Brahma, so no sinful reaction could effect you. Even then you took this wooden pole in hand as a punishment, just to teach the world that one should atone after committing offence. In spiritual science, wooden pole is a sign of pure goodness. Thus you are called as Khatvangi, because you possess pure-goodness-expanding potencies.”
Lord is almighty, still by atonement he follows scriptural injunctions to set an example in the world. Shat-Rudra-Samhita states—
    ब्रह्महत्यापनोदाय व्रतं लोकाय दर्शय।
    चर त्वं सततं भिक्षां कपालव्रतमाश्रितः॥
Constantly living on alms and holding skull and wooden leg in hands will
eliminate the sin of Brahma-hatya, killing of a holy man.
Other spiritualist translate ‘Khatvang’ as ‘Turiya Avastha’. This world is set
within four stages namely Jagrita(Awakening), Swapna (Dreaming), Sushupti (Sleeping) and Turiya (Transcedental). These are like four legs of a cot, on which the cot stands. The world is similar to a cot. Shiva stays beyond three stages, and he is fixed in the forth- one called ‘Turiya’. Thus he holds only a single leg of the cot, so he is called Khatvangi.
Shri Swayamprakash Yati says that a leg is a leg, as long as it is fixed to a cot. When it is separated from a cot, it is no more a leg. Similarly Jagrita,
Swapna and Sushupti stages are legs of the world in practical, but Turiya is a leg for lip-service only, because it is not fixed in the cot, rather it is in hands of Shiva. Turiya stage is not different to Shiva, therefore Khatvang is identical with Shiva. Vedic hymns sing—Shivam Chaturtham Manyate (Mandukya 7).
Acharya Madhusoodan Swami, in his interpretation of Mahimnah Stotram, has mentioned the ‘Prakriti’ as Khatvang. Prakriti is sustained by Lord
Maheshwar, so he is called Khatvangi.
Param-Purushartha (ultimate goal) is most desirable, so it is also called Khatvanga and Shiva is called Khatvangi because he supports it.

  • 011 of 108 Names of Lord Shiva : Shulapanihi – Weilder of Trishul
One who holds the weapon shula ( Trishula - trident ) in his hand . Why does the Lord hold a Trishul in His hands? Why do Hindu Gods have weapons in their hands? It represents active resistance
to evil. The importance of the Trishula is described in padma purāna
    अथ यज्ञात्मको विष्णु : त्रिशूलं मनसाकरोत्
    गुणावस्थाग्निकालात्मलोकशक्तित्रयात्मकं
atha yajñātmako viṣṇu : triśūlaṃ manasākarot
    guṇāvasthāgnikālātmalokaśaktitrayātmakaṃ
Lord Vishnu who is the embodiment of yagya - sacred sacrifices created the Trishula with his mind . The three tips of the Trishula indicate three gunas ( satva - peace purity and other qualities . Rajas - over - activeness , pride , etc and tamas - dullness ,
ignorance etc ) three states ( jaagrat - awaken state , svapna - dream state , sushupti - deep sleep state ) three kinds of sacred fires , three tenses , three worlds and three kinds of powers (ichcha - desire, kriya - action and gyaana -the knowledge) By
holding the Trishula which is a representation of above mentioned qualities, states and powers, it is clear that Lord Shiva is above all these and he is not bound to these. He controls them .
    In Rudram it is said:
    namah svaayudhaaya ca sudhanvane ca
Svayudha means Trishula. He has a good weapon like Trishula. It is infallible or a weapon which is auspicious. He destroys the Jiva’s bhoka & karma asakti and provides jnana & vairagya to the
    Jeeva.

  • 010.1 of 108 Names of Lord Shiva : Shankaraha - Destroyer of Doubts
शं करोति इति शंकर : śaṃ karoti iti śaṃkara : One who does sham . The meaning of the word sham has been explained already while explaining the name Shambhu. Shankara means one who does good and takes care of the welfare of the beings . One who does noble and generous deeds . This name is also praised in vedas नम : शंकरायच मयस्करायच nama : ṡaṃkarāyaca mayaskarāyaca
Sham kaarayati iti Shankaraha. He who causes Happiness. Shankara is the giver of Happiness. Shambhu also has the same meaning.
He who brought welfare to the ascetics of Daruka forest. Their wellbeing was in HIS hands. He who is like fire to the groups of doubts. The syllable ra stands for fire, while shanka means a cluster of doubts. shankaanaam samuhaha Shankam, tasya ra iva raha Sankaraha sarva-sankaa-daahakaha. Much censured by the ascetics, He deludes them, does good to them out of compassion and finally removes their doubts and grants true wisdom to them.

  • 009.2 of 108 Names of Lord Shiva : Neelalohitaha - One who is Pursha & Prakriti
Blue color denotes māyā or prakruti . Red color denotes Purusha or Atma. Neelalohita is the form of both māyā and purusha in a single form
    नीलश्च लोहितश्चैव प्रधान पुरुशान्वयात्
nīlaṡca lōhitaṡcaiva pradhāna puruṡānvayāt He is both blue and red as he is the concord of both pradhāna( prakruti ) and Purusha ( god or Atman )
Sometimes the Lord is depicted as Red and Maya as Blue or vice- versa. Indicating that they are one. Like the power of singing resides in the singer and whenever the singer wants, can invoke the power and utilise. Power to create, sustain and destroy resides in the Lord and the Lord manifests it whenever required. They both are one. It is not that Purusha is higher and Prakriti is lower. Same way the Power of singing remains in the Singer. Ofcourse
the power to sing resides in the singer and is dependent on the Singer but the Singer can remain without singing.
This name is also praised in the Vedas as द्रापे अन्धशस्पते दरिद्रं नीललोहित drāpē andhaṡaspatē daridraṃ nīlalōhita. Rudram Anuvak 10 Nilalohita: One whose half body is male and half female –Ardhanareeshwara.
Brahmaji created the 3 worlds and He created the 4 Sanatkumars from his mind and they were dispassionate. So they did not want to take forward the creation. Brahmaji prays to Lord Shiva to help
him to take creation forward. Shiva appears in front of Brahmaji in the Ardhanareeshwara Rupa. Brahmaji requests the Lord and His Shakti to split into two. They do so. 11 Rudras and 11 Rudranis
are born from the Lord and His Shakti respectively. They take forth the creation. Brahmaji gives 11 abodes to them. They are our 10 senses and our Subtle Body – Mind.
Symbolism of the story is – When creation has to be taken forward, both Purusha and Prakriti are required. Any one of them alone cannot do it. All Jivas / All of us are born from Purusha & Prakriti who are Neela-Lohita. Hence we are also Neela-Lohita, Blue-Red in color – Purusha-Prakriti combination. We are identified with Prakriti today. Sadhana is to detach and discover Purusha in us. Neela-Lohita indicates to us our True Nature as Purusha and we must reclaim it.
