  • Beyond the Edge - Interview with Sue Knight
    The Introduction:

In this informal interview I sit down with Sue Knight, who used her NLP tools and lived experience to get herself through the brutal North Cape ride and to meet an edge every single day — yes, every day — rather than just one big moment of drama.

I loved hearing how that practice of noticing patterns, choosing congruently (including catching a bus to the famous globe rather than battling ridiculous winds), and being willing to follow as well as lead reshaped how she shows up in life and training. We laugh about the highs — belly laughs in freezing campsites and surprise pizza gifts from kind strangers — and we get real about the lows, the moments she cracked on camera and what she learned from being vulnerable.

Sue explains how the ride strengthened her faith in humankind (trail angels galore), shifted the way she runs experiential NLP courses, and even informed a new trainer-apprentice approach she’s building. We also geek out on AI a bit — how it can mirror our language patterns, give comical “bloody” feedback and teach us about prompt craft — while remembering the human skills needed to work with it.

Expect playful stories, practical takeaways about edges and congruence, and some sharp insights on teaching presence and modelling excellence.

    Details:

We got a bit philosophical mid-chat — in the best way. Sue and I riff on edges: where we pull back, why we apologise or qualify ourselves, and how a challenge like the North Cape illuminates those invisible fences.

She offers practical pointers: notice where you hold back, choose the company of people who model excellence, and experiment with being more congruent. There’s also hard-earned honesty about the costs — Sue admits the ride pushed her physically and that she’s reviewing what she does going forward, including whether she’ll book that India trip or tweak future rides for kinder conditions.

The conversation ends on an upswing: concrete changes Sue’s making (apprenticeships, deeper trainer training, integrating modelling practice across programmes), plus small delights — the surprise pizza, the trail angels, and the communal laughter.

We leave listeners with an invitation to examine their own edges, to pick better company, and to choose congruence over dutiful completion. It’s warm, witty and, frankly, a perfect reminder that big adventures teach the small daily choices that actually make us happy.

    Chapters:
    • 00:23 - Navigating Challenges in 2026
    • 01:26 - Taking on the North Cape 4000
    • 25:05 - From Journey to Course: Designing a New Combination Program
    • 35:03 - Taking Stock: Travel, Health, and Future Plans
    • 39:22 - Chiropractic Insight: Fascia, Patterns, and Hidden Causes of Pain

    Takeaways:
    • I learned that pushing my edges every single day taught me resilience and resourcefulness, surprising me often.
    • We discovered that following someone else's careful, procedural plan can be a skill worth training, not weakness.
    • I chose congruence over peer-pressure near the finish — took the bus to the globe, and felt brilliant about it.
    • We witnessed astonishing kindness on remote roads: strangers fixed bikes, offered tea and pizza, restoring my faith in people.
    • I realised showing vulnerability on the ride made my training feel more authentic; participants connected with my messy moments.
    • We affirmed experiential learning beats lectures — doing exercises in the room helps patterns pop out and stick.
    • I started playing with AI as a cheeky language partner, using it to study patterns, get feedback and joke around.
    • I'm re-evaluating future plans: more congruence, smarter condition management, maybe solo rides, camping experiments and looking after my body.

  • Leanne McCafferty - From yawns to yes! How I rewired my brain with NLP and took back my life
    Intro

Leanne McCafferty used NLP to take back control of her health after a diagnosis of functional neurological disorder and, spoiler alert, she’s thriving — travelling the world, running coaching programmes and creating the Beacon Pathway.

I’m Heather Masters and I had the absolute pleasure of chatting with Leanne about how shifting beliefs, tiny daily goals and a bit of curiosity rewired her life (yes, she really stopped those embarrassing afternoon yawning fits — wild).

Leanne’s background in psychology and 25 years in health and social care give her stories real grit, from learning to shuffle cards to rebuild hand strength to signing up for trainer’s training with Sue Knight and moving to the Dordogne.

We also dive into how presence and modelling excellent behaviour are the core of NLP practice, and how she used those skills to help teachers and kids in Uganda see the resources they already had. Expect practical takeaways — be kind to yourself, ask “what if I could…?”, take one small step at a time and own your choices — plus plenty of warmth, humour and inspiring travel tales.

If you want a heartfelt, no-nonsense guide to getting unstuck and choosing a happier, more empowered life, Leanne’s story is a brilliant place to start.

    The Detail:

I grabbed a brew and had a proper natter with Leanne McCafferty — an NLP trainer who’s gone from being told she had a baffling neurological diagnosis to travelling the world with a 20kg backpack and coaching others to do the same.

We talk about the moment that flipped everything: a two‑day intro to NLP where a cheeky question about yawning stopped her mid‑yawn. That little miracle cracked open a belief system and set Leanne on a path of curiosity, small daily wins and, yep, a whole lot of rewiring.

We chat about how she shifted from focusing on problems to focusing on possibilities, and how tiny, kind actions (hello, practising card shuffles for hand strength) became the building blocks for huge changes in health, identity and life choices.

We also explore the nuts and bolts of NLP as Leanne lives it — not just tools, but a way of seeing the structure of experience, modelling excellence and being present. She shares stories from India, France and Uganda where presence and noticing real strengths in people changed classrooms, helped teachers teach and inspired a teacher to build his own village school.

The conversation moves into practical territory too: take responsibility without blame, use the space between stimulus and response, ask “what if I could?”, and then be kind to yourself as you take one step at a time. It’s warm, honest and peppered with the kind of humour that makes growth feel less scary and more doable.

    Chapters:
    • 00:04 - Introducing Leanne McCafferty — NLP Trainer & Coach
    • 01:07 - Meet Leanne McCafferty — NLP trainer & coach
    • 15:35 - From Stuck to Strategy: An NLP Approach to Getting Unstuck
    • 32:39 - Bringing NLP to Uganda: Teaching, Coaching and Cultural Immersion
    • 40:41 - Choosing Happy: The Podcast and a Journey to Joy
    • 46:03 - If You're Feeling Stuck: Steps to Move Forward

    Takeaways:
    • I was diagnosed with a functional neurological disorder, meds alone didn’t help, and NLP gave me practical tools to regain agency over symptoms and everyday life.
    • In a two‑day intro course I changed my belief about uncontrollable yawning — proof that limiting beliefs can be rewired far quicker than you'd expect.
    • I built the Beacon Pathway from the exact step‑by‑step strategy I used to get unstuck — awareness, curiosity, tiny goals, self‑kindness and consistency (yes, I even shuffled cards to rebuild hand strength!).
    • NLP isn't just a bag of tricks — it's the study of how people do excellence, modelling that structure and using presence to notice subtle signals.
    • When I went to Uganda I submerged myself in the culture, noticed hidden skills in teachers and kids, and helped them amplify existing strengths rather than imposing outside solutions.
    • We emphasise that even in the hardest moments we have a choice between stimulus and response — taking responsibility for how we react unlocks genuine freedom.
    • If you're feeling stuck, start with awareness and curiosity: learn how someone else did it, allow yourself to believe change is possible, then take one tiny step today.
    • Choosing yourself and shifting identity is scary but transformative — leaving old roles, travelling, and practising daily habits led me to better health, purpose and proper happiness.

  • Grief, Goals & Roundabouts — A Very Human Check‑In With Me, Heather Masters
    Intro

The main point: as the year winds down, we’re deciding where to put our time and energy, and I’m digging into how modelling — from neuro‑linguistic programming — can help us make those choices and actually follow through.

I’m Heather Masters, checking in after a bit of radio silence to share what’s been happening (loss of my lovely dog, a significant birthday, a bout of Wi‑Fi drama) and how those life bits have pushed me up against boundaries I’m reconsidering. I talk honestly about grief and capacity — you can have big plans and still need gentler care — and I share a proper lived example of moving from “absolutely not” to “I drove in France” (yes, the roundabouts were as dramatic as you imagine).

I explain why noticing what worked when things did go well — the tiny practical details we usually ignore — is a brilliant strategy for tackling new challenges. I’ve also been recording interviews with people doing exceptional things, and I’ll be sharing those conversations soon, but for now I offer a small experiment: pick a manageable win, map out what you actually did, and try one piece of that on something you’re considering now. Come join me as we choose happy, get less stuck, and maybe practise another roundabout or two for good measure.

    Details:

When I say I’m back, I mean properly back — with interviews lined up and a pocketful of reflections after a patchy break.

This summary leans into the practical: modelling, the NLP idea of studying excellence, and how to extract real-world tactics from successes you barely even noticed at the time. I walk you through what modelling actually looks like — paying attention to decisions, patterns, conversations, how someone recovers when plans go sideways — and suggest you apply that same curious detective energy to your own wins.

If your first instinct is "I was more confident," I challenge you (gently!) to pin down what that actually looked like in behaviour and prep. That’s the useful stuff you can copy-and-paste into new situations. To make it properly usable, I give a tiny, doable journalling exercise: pick a small boundary you crossed in the past, list the exact moves that got you through, and borrow one micro-strategy for something you’re considering now.

My own borrowed strategies included remembering why the freedom mattered, noticing other nervous drivers (and not being alone in the panic), and leaning on the courage I’ve seen in clients. It’s practical, low-drama, and exactly the kind of thing that helps you choose happiness without feeling pressured to reinvent yourself overnight.

    Chapters:
    • 00:06 - Catching Up — My Recent Break and What’s Ahead
    • 03:13 - Acknowledging grief — losing my dog and moving forward
    • 05:53 - Driving in France — Embracing the Unknown
    • 10:11 - Modeling Ourselves — Using NLP to Learn from Success
    • 15:24 - Exploring the Decisions Available to You
    • 18:14 - Back and Looking Ahead — Upcoming Interviews & Listener Questions

    Takeaways:
    • I acknowledge grief and practical life at the same time, reminding us that happiness includes holding sorrow.
    • I drove in France despite decades of avoidance, and that roundabout marathon taught me useful courage strategies (and a funny new skill).
    • We can model success by examining exactly what people do — the decisions, attention, habits and behaviours — not just vague confidence.
    • I'm asking whether I'm ready to put a commercial value on my experience and bid for bigger corporate work, while keeping my worth separate from outcomes.
    • I invite you to try a tiny experiment: pick a small past win, unpack what you actually did, and test one specific part now.
    • I'm bringing interviews about NLP, modelling and practical strategies to help us choose happy and navigate life's nonsense over these final months.

Well, you’re not alone! Join me, Heather Master, as I dive into my own fitness journey and the surprising hurdles I faced when my workout routine began to eat into my precious morning time.

I’ll share how I creatively combined dog-walking with squats and lunges to keep moving without sacrificing my schedule. The Details

Life can feel like a never-ending game of dodgeball, and just when you think you’ve got it all figured out, BOOM – change comes flying at you!

In this episode, I’m spilling the beans on my fitness journey and how I managed to juggle workout challenges while keeping my mornings intact.

After realising I was turning into a couch potato over winter (gasp!), I hopped on the fitness bandwagon with some challenges.

But when my 30-day challenge morphed into a time-consuming beast, I knew I had to get crafty. Enter the genius idea of combining dog walking with workouts – because why not make Fido your workout buddy? Trust me, squatting by the lamppost while your dog sniffs every blade of grass is a sight to behold!

But this episode isn’t just about my doggie workouts; we’re diving deep into how to adapt to change in our lives.

I’ll share three golden nuggets: First, let’s shift our mindset and embrace that change is just part of the ride. Second, we’ll explore how to creatively leverage our time and resources – can your housework double as a workout?

Spoiler: yes! And third, we’ll tap into that magical gift of intuition. Sometimes, it’s our gut that knows best, especially when logic starts leading us in circles.

So, whether you’re in the midst of a life transition or just trying to figure out how to fit in a workout, join me for a fun-filled chat on how to keep choosing happiness amidst the chaos!

    Chapters:

    Takeaways:

    • Combining tasks creatively can save time and boost motivation, like exercising while walking the dog – multitasking for the win!
    • Using our intuition can be a powerful guide when facing uncertainty, allowing us to make quicker, more effective decisions.
    • Recognising the gifts of our unconscious mind can open up new paths and opportunities, especially in times of rapid change and uncertainty.

  • From Busy to Bliss: How to Ditch the Doing

    Intro

Action is the name of the game, and this week, I’m diving deep into why moving your body is the secret sauce to feeling more alive and kicking those brain fog blues to the curb!

I learned the hard way that just being busy doesn’t cut it; it’s all about intentional action, and let me tell you, I’ve had my fair share of “throwing mud at the wall” moments.

We’re chatting about how taking a proper walk can work wonders, and why it’s crucial to check in with what’s actually working in our lives instead of just grinding away.

So grab your favourite snack—Hobnobs, anyone?—and settle in as we explore how slowing down sometimes sets the stage for speeding up, and how we can all get a bit clearer on what we really want!

    The Detail

Heather Masters takes us on a rollercoaster ride through the wild world of action (and inaction) in this episode of Choosing Happy!

With her trademark playful tone, she recounts her past year of relentless hustle, where she was buried under a mountain of tasks without a clear direction. Imagine a pizza, but a pizza that’s also a metaphor for feeling a bit lost – that’s how Heather describes her state of mind.

It’s a relatable, funny narrative that sets the stage for a discussion about the importance of meaningful action in our lives.

As we plunge into the meaty core of the episode, Heather shares her newfound wisdom on how just being busy doesn’t equate to being productive. She tackles the buzzword ‘consistency’ and offers a refreshing perspective: it’s not just about showing up every day; it’s about showing up with intention. Are we doing things that matter, or are we just hiding behind a flurry of activity?

With her infectious enthusiasm, Heather encourages us to assess our actions and make sure they align with our goals.

She’s all about finding that sweet spot where action meets intention, and it’s a revelation that feels like a warm hug on a chilly day!

By the end of this episode, listeners are left feeling invigorated and ready to tackle their own action plans with clarity.

Heather wraps it up with a challenge that’s as delightful as it is thought-provoking: take a moment to identify one action in your life that’s just a cover for avoidance. It’s a little nudge to help us all move forward with purpose, and who doesn’t love a good nudge?

So, grab your favourite snack, kick back, and get ready to embrace the joyful chaos of life with Heather’s insights on action and intention!

    Chapters:

    • 00:13 - The Power of Action in Creativity
    • 01:55 - Reflections on Consistency and Action
    • 05:51 - Finding Clarity in Action
    • 09:32 - Building Systems vs. Being Busy
    • 11:48 - Finding Your Intentional Action

    Takeaways:

    • Action is the magic ingredient that transforms ideas into reality, so get moving!
    • Sometimes the best thing to do is to slow down and listen to your own needs.
    • Being busy doesn't always equate to being productive; focus on what truly matters instead.
    • Intentional action is where the real progress happens, rather than just doing for the sake of it.
    • Finding clarity in your goals can turn frantic activity into meaningful achievements.
    • It's crucial to differentiate between genuine action and mere busywork to avoid burnout.

  • Five Minutes After 5 Years (1 - Hobknobs and Happiness Series)
Welcome to a new series - Hobknobs and Happiness

Got a dusty piece of equipment lurking in your house, just waiting for the day you decide to give it a whirl? Well, you’re not alone! This week, we're diving into the hilarious and oh-so-relatable world of pandemic purchases that have turned into glorified furniture. Heather shares her own saga with a rebounder that sat in its box for five long years—yes, five years! But here’s the kicker: it’s not just about the rebounder! It’s all about the stories we tell ourselves, the guilt we carry, and the support we often forget to ask for. So grab a cuppa, kick back, and let’s uncover how a little help can turn a mountain of procrastination into a molehill of action!

    The Details:

Picture this: Heather, our host and resident cheerleader, finally faces her nemesis—a rebounder that’s been languishing in its box since the pandemic began. I mean, who hasn’t bought something shiny and new in the hopes of transforming into a fitness guru during lockdown? Spoiler alert: most of us end up with a pile of ‘I’ll get to it later’ clutter! In this episode, we explore the hilarious yet poignant journey of finally getting that rebounder out of the box, with a little help from a friendly neighbour. What starts as a simple task morphs into a deep dive into the narratives we create about time and capability. Heather shares her lightbulb moment—realising that it wasn’t about finding more time, but rather about embracing support. It’s a reminder that sometimes, asking for help isn’t a sign of weakness, but a brilliant strategy for moving forward. So, if you’re juggling the weight of unfulfilled aspirations and the guilt of procrastination, join us for a fun chat that’s sure to lift your spirits and maybe even inspire you to tackle your own ‘rebounder’!

    Chapters:

    • 00:31 - The Stories We Tell Ourselves
    • 01:31 - The Struggle to Start: Overcoming Barriers to Action
    • 03:30 - Letting Go of Guilt and Asking for Help
    • 05:05 - Finding Control in a Noisy World
    • 06:11 - Embracing Support and Imperfection
    • 07:10 - Wrapping Up the Episode

    Takeaways:

    • Many of us have items lying around that represent our hopes from the pandemic, like that rebounder gathering dust in the corner. Isn't it funny how those purchases reflect who we thought we wanted to be?
    • Heather's experience with her rebounder is a reminder that sometimes we just need a little help to get things done, because asking for support isn’t a sign of weakness, it’s a brilliant strategy!
    • We often mistake a lack of time for a lack of support. The truth is, it’s not about having more hours in the day, but about having the right people by your side to tackle life's little challenges.
    • The anxiety of unfinished tasks can weigh more heavily on us than actually doing them, so let’s drop the guilt and tackle those tasks one small step at a time.

  • Gen X: Built for Shifting Times
Feeling like life just doesn’t fit anymore?

Well, Heather Masters is here to sprinkle some wisdom on that!

In this episode of the Choosing Happy Podcast, we dive into the idea that maybe, just maybe, the life that feels too snug is actually a sign that you’re ready for a fabulous upgrade! Heather shares her journey through a world of monumental changes—like the time we all had to figure out what a computer mouse was (spoiler: it’s not a pet!).

We chat about the beauty of Generation X being the bridge between the old and new, and how this perspective helps us not just survive but thrive amidst the chaos.

So grab a cuppa, kick back, and let’s shift gears together, because it’s time to embrace the life that truly fits you!

    The Details

In a world that’s changing faster than a chameleon on a rainbow, Heather Masters is here to remind us that feeling like your life no longer fits isn’t the end—it’s merely the beginning of a new chapter!

With her trademark warmth and wit, she shares tales from her Gen X upbringing, where floppy disks were all the rage and computers had a learning curve steeper than a rollercoaster. It’s a nostalgic stroll down memory lane that sets the stage for a conversation about resilience and adaptability in the face of constant change.

As Heather reflects on monumental events that shaped her generation—from the IRA bombings to the Great Financial Crisis—the takeaway is clear: we’ve been through the wringer and come out stronger on the other side!

She posits that the struggles and uncertainties we face today aren’t just challenges; they’re opportunities for growth. And while younger generations might be overwhelmed by the digital noise, Gen X brings a unique perspective to the table—one that blends the old with the new, the analog with the digital. In this episode, Heather encourages listeners to reclaim their power in a time of uncertainty.

She highlights that it’s perfectly fine to feel like your old life no longer fits; it doesn’t mean you’ve failed. Instead, it’s about recognising that you’ve grown, and with growth comes the need for change.

She’s on a mission to empower women to step confidently into a future that aligns with their true selves. So if you’re feeling stuck, get ready to be inspired! Heather’s insights might just be the spark you need to ignite a new passion or venture.

And hey, if you're looking for a little guidance, she’s got coaching spots open—because the world needs you to show up as your best self!

    • 00:17 - Embracing Change: A New Perspective

    • 07:10 - Navigating Change: The Perspective of Generation X

    • When the world gets noisy, we need perspective; let's remember our roots and what we know!
