Chord Progression Podcast: The Gateway to New Rock and Metal Music

When we see a band described as the offspring of Linkin Park and Fall Out Boy, we are easily going to be curious about what that sound is like, and where it came from.

What we found was a band that took their influences from rock, metal, hip hop, and pop, learning the hooks that make bands like Nickelback so popular, and found a creative sound that is ready to soar after already being feature on the Late Show with Stephen Colbert and Football Night in America.

Jake from Autumn Kings joins the Chord Progression Podcast today as we have one of the most insightful conversations you will ever hear around music creation from an emerging artist. That is why we dive deep into:

• Why Linkin Park was the most integral band influnecing so many artists today, and how Autumn Kings took that genre-blending focus their own way.
• How Nickelback writes such incredible hooks with the use of wordplay, and how Jake became obsessed with using that inspiration for Autumn Kings.
• A look into the newest single Hellbound, and why storytelling in art has become so much more important.

Easily one of the most insightful music conversations you will listen to in 2024. Hit the subscribe button to not miss out on anything further.

When you are in a band that has traditionally been built on being DIY, it is hard to trust others to bring in into the band and help grow it to its large potential.

But what happens when you have a band with members that are all interested in other aspects of being in the music business, and can help maintain that DIY approach as the team grows? Now that's a recipe for success.

Eyker and Brendan from Set For Tomorrow join the Chord Progression podcast today. We give you the best possible introduction to this new band talking about:

• How Set For Tomorrow's origins in the DIY style have blended well working with others to continue to grow the band, while still maintaining the DIY energy.
• The importance of taking chances and putting yourself out their for your dreams, similar to what brought Eyker into the band.
• A look into their recent single CTRL, and how its surface level relationship focus goes much deeper into a song about personal growth and accountability.

So much can change in 2 years. From what you like, where your life is at, who you are in relationships with, all of it. For the music industry, much has changed too in how music is distributed, marketed, and consumed.

So how can a band who hasn't released anything new in 2 years compete in this musical landscape? They Bear Grylls it. IMPROVISE, ADAPT, OVERCOME.

Joey from In Her Own Words joins the Chord Progression Podcast today (rounding out the roster of Thriller Records bands to make it to the podcast.) On this episode, we dive deep into:

• What the band has been up to over the past two years, and why it took them that long to begin releasing new music again.

When a band has been around for 30 years, clearly they have done something right with their music, presentation, everything. But how does a band that has been around this long not only stay relevant but keep growing?

In 2024, with new music coming out, a masked persona, and a culture that is becoming more accepting to metal and cosplay as a whole, there is no perfect time than right now for this band to grow again after 30 years.

Today, Skinny from Mushroomhead joins the Chord Progression Podcast, masked and all. With the band's 9th album, Call The Devil, releasing on August 9th, we take 30 minutes to talk about:

• Properly releasing this album with a European and USA tour, when the previous album was released during the pandemic.
• How the band continues to experiment on Call The Devil, still showing enthusiasm for music creation for over 30 years.
• Why Mushroomhead is in a great position to continue having a great resurgence with a sound and a persona that culture is much more appreciative of.

Today's music world is all about the single, trying to stay relevant for an algorithm, and trying to go viral. It is not necessarily sustainable for high quality music.

But there are still bands that are using the current landscape to their advantage, and allowing their individualistic sound to be the attraction point for fans across generations. And today, we found one of the new ones.

The guys from the alternative/grunge band Return to Dust join the Chord Progression Podcast. Over the past year, the band has been growing massively and we recap it by discussing:

• How the band's infusion of a grunge core sound mixed with so much more has allowed the band to appeal to fans across generations.
• The story of Return to Dust getting booked to support Chevelle and Sevendust in back to back tours in 2024.
• Reception of their self-titled LP and how their music was able to stand on its own in regards to quality and speaking to the band's ability to continue to grow their sound going forward.

When a longtime band needs to replace a crucial member going forward, what are they to do? Are they going to throw in the towel, or put in the work to find the perfect replacement?

With this band, they not only found the perfect replacement in terms of sound, but found it in one of their oldest fans around. Now they are ready to go forward with the next chapter of the band.

Christian from Anberlin and new vocalist Matty Mullins (Memphis May Fire) join the Chord Progression Podcast. On this episode, the three of us discuss:

• How Matty joined Anberlin, and how this was over a year in the making in terms of planning, and executing.
• Why writing new music is not difficult for the band, with a new vocalist who knows the in's and out's of the band's legacy and sound.

2 years ago, we aired our 300th episode with JunkBunny (their first ever podcast interview). At that time, Mac was all alone in the band, with the direction yet to be determined.

Now in 2024, a lot has changed. The band is now full, a new album is out, and they are ready to pick up that momentum from before the pandemic hit.

Mac from JunkBunny is back on the Chord Progression Podcast, with new members Issac and Seth along for the ride. Much has changed in the past 2 years, so we talk about:

• JunkBunny's history over the past 2 years, and how it went from a one man band, to now a full cohesive band once again.
• How JunkBunny got suspended from Tik Tok for 10 years, and how they are using social media to their advantage.
• The new album, Starting Over, and how JunkBunny specifically made their sound to sound nowhere near like anyone else in music today.

Not only does the Chord Progression Podcast show you some of the best upcoming bands in rock and metal, we get to give advice to bands that want to grow as well. And today, is one of those days for both.

We have a band that has built up a large fanbase in their local community. But, what is the plan for them to break out of the local scene, and become a bigger regional band, then national band, then international band? Well, they share just that.

Midwest Emo/Pop Punk band Old Neon joins the Chord Progression Podcast, to prove why they are going to break into that regional status, on their way to international band status. So this episode, we talk about:

• The plan Old Neon has to continue to build strong fan bases and communities in the pop punk & emo genre outside of their local scene, and grow regionally.
• Why an openness to collaboration with newer band members has allowed Old Neon to create a more evolved sound, and leave the door open for further exploration.
• A look into Old Neon's evolving sound on Whatever Helps you Sleep At Night, and how a YouTube tutorial led to its Midwest Emo influence.

Another great band to discover, and another great band to learn from. Want more episodes like this? Hit the subscribe button for more!

No matter the size of your band, the mindset of opening a show and headlining ghat show is vastly different. From the duty associated with your spot on the bill, the amount of people at the show, and the energy they display before your set, your mindset needs to be ready to handle it all.

In the growing world of deathcore music, one band is experiencing this. And when it comes to how they are going to succeed is all dependent on one thing, mindset.

Simon from the Florida deathcore band Tracheotomy joins the Cord Progression Podcast today. With the band's newest EP, Fixated Propensity for Destruction, dropping on July 19th, and a headlining tour to support it, we discuss:

• The decision Tracheotomy made to headline shows supporting the EP release, and the mindset it takes to be the best opener, and the best headliner, you can be.
• Why music is the "3rd place" for most people, and why artists need to show appreciation to concert attendees as costs keep rising.
• Fixated Propensity for Destruction, the use of samples, and what the must listen to track is on the album.

Deathcore keeps rising and here is a new band for you to check out. Want to discover more bands like this? Hit the subscribe button and join us.

2 years ago, Ovtlier recorded a song with Chris Motionless, and have been sitting on it, awaiting for the perfect time to give it to the world.

Now, with Motionless In White writing new music, and people clamoring for something epic in terms of a new track, now is the time to release it. And the success of the release could not happen to a more deserving band, and a more deserving person.

Joey Arena from Ovtlier returns to the Chord Progression Podcast for the 5th time overall, and this might be his best one yet. Join us as we look into Warriors discussing:

• How Chris Motionless was featured on the track, along with the reason the track seems like the perfect cross of style between Ovtlier and Motionless In White.
• The reason Ovtlier waited 2 years to release this track, reshooting the music video for a much better outcome, and why timing is a large component of success in business and music.
• Why Joey Arena is not only one of the most admirable people in music today, but why his integrity as a man is something that can inspire all of us (as it has for us for over 4 years).

We could not be happier to bring you this great conversation with a friend, and a band you should get into. Want to get into more great bands? Hit the subscribe button to never miss an episode.
